BJ Ryan was released by the Jays today

In an unexpected, but not totally surprising move, the Toronto Blue Jays released B.J. Ryan today.  The Blue Jays will be responsible for about 18M through the end of next year. This does open the door though for another team to take a cheap flyer on the former top notch closer.  Jorge Arangure suggests the Marlins may be that team in his Twitter feed, citing that they need bullpen help and Mark Wiley the current Marlins pitching coach, was BJ’s coach when he had success in Baltimore.  Seems like a move that could happen to me, but we will stay on top of it at NLEC.  I honestly don’t see any other NL East team making a huge effort to get him, but at the same time, all could use the bullpen help.

Ryan has spent some time on the DL this year, but is 1-1 with only 2 saves and a 6.53 ERA so far this year in 25 games.  Scott Downs was activated off the DL to take his place on the roster.
