Welcome to this Years First Edition of “Chatter Up”, Throughout the season we will be asking 5 questions to each teams affiliate blogger concerning their respective teams and the upcoming series. We open up with the hottest rivalry in the division for the last few seasons, The Philadelphia Phillies Vs. The New York Mets.

Answering our questions concerning the Mets and this upcoming series we have James Figueroa from “The Real Dirty Metsblog”

Mets Logo

Q: What do you see the Mets doing Long Term with their open spots in the rotation behind Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana?

A: If by long term your referring to this season, I would say the rotation will be as it was on opening day. Realistically, I see Oliver Perez back in the rotation soon followed by Jon Niese. The real question mark is John Maine. I think the Mets will take a hard look at a guy like Milwood and perhaps make an offer for his services but thats about it. I do not think Roy Oswalt is coming to the Mets.

Q:  Has this rivalry become the second biggest in baseball behind the Yankees vs Red Sox?

A: If both our teams are playing well and are healthy, absolutely. No rivalry in ALL of sports is going to top Yanks/Sox, everyone knows this. Due to our recent history and the close proximity of our towns, it is the second biggest rivalry in sports. Id say the twins/sox/tigers is a close third.

Q:  After this weekend’s attendance for the Subway Series do you see the Mets fans packing the stadium this week for this rivalry as well?

A: I think it will be packed. Philly fans are very loyal to their team and they do not have a problem showing up in other peoples houses. I expect a similar crowd to the subway series, especially since we beat the Yankees 2 times in a row and we are playing good baseball.

Q:  If and When Carlos Beltran comes back, Do you see the Mets keeping Pagan in the starting line up using him in right field rather than the struggling Jeff Franceour?

A: That is an option. Due to Pagan’s awesome play this year, there is no doubt the Mets have to keep him when Beltran comes back. The obvious odd man out when that happens should be Gary Matthews Jr(im sure nobody will shed a tear at this point). The good thing about Pagan is his ability to play all the outfield positions and play them well, not to mention he can handle a bat. Pagan has played himself into the long term plans of this team.

Q: What do you feel will be Daniel Murphy’s Ultimate role to the Mets once he is ready to return?

A: His role should be what it was always supposed to be, a utility player. Daniel Murphy is a grinder who’s hard work is something that makes him a good role model for guys coming up, which seems to be the direction the Mets are going in. The players like Murphy and management likes Murphy. The other thing about Daniel that is great is his great attitude toward doing whatever the team needs him to do. Right now, he is learning other positions in AAA to help our club. A guy with that work ethic is hard to come by and is one they should try to hold on to.

Answering our questions about the Phillies and the Upcoming series we have Matt Smith from “Phillies Phandom”

phillies-logo

1) Have the Phillies considered yet that Jimmy Rollins Calf injury might just be a lingering injury that could affect him most of the season?

It’s a definite concern, but I think Rollins and the team feel that the injury won’t hinder him throughout the year. Right now it’s considered a mild calf strain, which isn’t as severe as the first time. He should be back after the 15 days. Then again, his game is based largely on his speed, so you never know.

2) Do the Phillies handle series against the Mets any different now that they have owned the rivalry for the past 3 seasons?

It’s still a huge rivalry to the Phillies. The Mets are feeling good after taking two of three from the Yankees, while the Phillies have to regroup following their worst two games of the year against Boston. As far as I’m concerned, this is an important series. If the Mets sweep, they would be only two games out of first place.

3) Are the Phillies worried about the Back end of their Bullpen with the recent struggles of Ryan Madson and the durability of Brad Lidge?

Jose Contreras has done a fantastic job in Lidge’s place. Danys Baez is just another guy. The bullpen is average at best, but not bad. I think the team realizes it can get by without Lidge and Madson for a while. Right now, the bullpen situation is not a concern.

4) Who do you feel will be the biggest threat to the Phillies in this year’s NL East Race down the road?

The Braves are playing really well right now. With their starting pitching, they can get hot and stay hot. I would say they are the No. 1 favorite to knock off the Phils.

5) Are there any problems the Phillies are concerned about for the rest of this season, despite looking as the class of the NL once again thus far?

Injuries. We’ve managed to be OK without J.A. Happ and Rollins virtually the entire season. We’re hanging on right now, but one more major injury would kill us. Every team has its issues, but at this point, I don’t see how the Phillies lose the NL East unless major injuries are a factor. This is a team that knows how to win when it has to win.

Special Thanks to both James Figueroa and Matt Smith

Phillies Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(73-52, 1st in NL East) had a bit of a surprise and a possible worry when in Pittsburgh this week.  They had opportunities to win all three games, and three times late comebacks caused at the least, extra innings if not a loss.  Monday and Tuesday the leads were blown by the bullpen, luckily Ryan Howard saved them on Wednesday, but on Thursday they allowed the starter J.A. Happ to try to finish and he couldn’t do it either.  They hope to get the wheels rollin again at home against division rival Atlanta.   Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Atlanta Braves(67-60, tied for 2nd in NL East 7GB) also had a tough week, one that they thought should be an easy one.  They managed to take the finale of a three game set against the pesky Padres with a blowout victory Thursday afternoon.  The Braves started the week alone in second, but now find themselves back in a tie for second with the Marlins.  Neither team looks to have the horses to get a playoff birth right now, but a good weekend could change that. Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Hanson,ATL(9-2,3.12 ERA) vs. Martinez,PHI(2-0,5.14 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Lowe,ATL(12-8,4.48 ERA) vs. Lee,PHI(12-9,2.63 ERA)
Sunday @ 8:05PM EST – Jurrjens,ATL(10-8,2.91 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(8-6,3.88 ERA)
Marlins Logo VS Braves Logo
The Florida Marlins(67-60, tied for 2nd in NL East 7GB) welcomed in the AAA Mets this week to South Florida and they couldn’t even up the attendance with Mets fans!  The Fish did manage to take the first two games of the series before the pitching failed them in the finale on Thursday.  The series win moved them back into a second place tie, and they look to gain ground in an unlikely playoff race now.  FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The San Diego Padres(54-75, 6th in NL West 22.5GB) are into the role of playing spoiler now.  They went into Atlanta as mentioned previously and took two of three from the playoff hopeful Padres, dashing many of their hopes.  They can put a real damper in the hearts of the Marlins fans this weekend in South Florida.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Correia,SD(8-10,4.46 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(9-10,4.73 ERA)
Saturday @ 6:10PM EST – TBA,SD(—,-.– ERA) vs. Nolasco,FLA(9-8,5.31 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Latos,SD(4-3,4.06 ERA) vs. West,FLA(5-5,4.44 ERA)
Mets Logo VS Cubs Logo
The New York Mets(58-70, 4th in NL East 16.5GB) got more injury news this week, as Johan Santana, JJ Putz and Oliver Perez are all now done for the season.  Oddly enough, David Wright looks to be coming back in a few days, but they just want to get through the season with no more injuries, or at least none that will linger to next year.  This weekend they go to Chicago where the Cubs don’t have the injury excuse for their play, they just aren’t playing to the level they should be.  It should be interesting, do the underachivers win, or the injury depleted team?  The Real Dirty Mets Blog has more.

The Chicago Cubs (63-62, 2nd in NL Central 9GB) are just a lost team since the all-star break and one could make the argument, all season.  They are now 9 full games out of first and just lost a series to the Washington Nationals, so things are just not going well for them.  This should be an interesting series to watch..for all the wrong reasons.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 2:20PM EST – Misch,NYM(0-1,4.09 ERA) vs. Lilly,CHI(9-8,3.40 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:10PM EST – Parnell,NYM(3-6,5.08 ERA) vs. Dempster,CHI(7-7,4.07 ERA)
Sunday @ 2:20PM EST – Figueroa,NYM(1-3,5.40 ERA) vs. Zambrano,CHI(7-5,3.80 ERA)
Nats Logo VS Cardinals Logo
The Washington Nationals(46-82, 5th in NL East 28.5GB) are enjoying playing spoiler, or this week, maybe more appropriately, embarasser.  The Cubs don’t have that many injuries as stated above, but they are still floundering and lost two of three to the Nationals this week.  The Nats can put a dent into the Cardinals this weekend, but they likely will not effect their playoff standing much with the nine game lead.   Check out CenterfieldGate for more.

The St. Louis Cardinals(74-55, 1st in NL Central) are running away with the division right now.  The combination of having Matt Holliday in their now vaunted lineupe and good pitching, including the newcomer John Smoltz has put them out to a nine game lead over the Cubs.  They should be able to cruise into the playoffs now, but look for them to still try to stay sharp.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 8:15PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-9,4.03 ERA) vs. Smoltz,STL(3-5,7.40 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:15PM EST – Stammen,WAS(4-6,5.08 ERA) vs. Boggs,STL(1-2,4.58 ERA)
Sunday @ 2:15PM EST – Mock,WAS(3-5,5.23 ERA) vs. Wainwright,STL(15-7,2.50 ERA)

Phillies Logo VS Pirates Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(72-50, 1st in NL East) were able to stay hot this weekend as they visited the ailing New York Mets, not such a surprise.  They now have a seven game lead over the second place Braves as they travel to interstate rival Pittsburgh for a three game set.  There are not many holes to find right now in the Phillies, and they will hope to stay healthy on their march towards the playoffs.  Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Pittsburgh Pirates(51-71, 6th in NL Central 19GB) took two out of three games this past weekend in Cincinnati after sweeping the Brewers last week.  They are still running out a young and exciting team on a daily basis and hope to keep showcasing next year’s stars against the Phillies this week against the defending champs.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:05PM EST – Blanton,PHI(8-6,3.86 ERA)vs. Ohlendorf,PIT(11-8,4.15 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:05PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-8,4.78 ERA) vs. Maholm,PIT(7-7,4.74 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:05PM EST – Happ,PHI(10-2,2.59 ERA) vs. Morton,PIT(3-6,5.21 ERA)
Padres Logo VS Braves Logo
The Atlanta Braves(66-58, 2nd in NL East 7GB, 4.5GB of wildcard) come off a successful week of play within the division.  They started by taking two of three games from the New York Mets in New York and then in a critical series for the battle of second, they overtook the Marlins.  They went into the weekend tied for second and are now alone in second by one game but have a big uphill battle to the playoffs that they hope to start this week . The Braves Baseball Blog will have more on the Braces and this series.

The San Diego Padres(52-74, 5th in NL West 22.5GB) continue to play out the string, what else can you say?  They did manage to hurt the reeling Chicago Cubs last week taking two of three games, but then the Cardinals reminded them of their place over the weekend.  They continue to march towards another offseason with question marks about their organization and who they will trade, but will have to face the Braves first.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:00PM EST – Latos,SD(4-3,4.82 ERA) vs. Jurrjens,ATL(10-8,2.99 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:00PM EST – Stauffer,SD(1-6,3.95 ERA) vs. Kawakami,ATL(6-9,3.97 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:00PM EST – Richard,SD(7-3,4.42 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-9,3.14 ERA)
Mets Logo VS Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlins(65-59, 3rd in NL East 8GB 5.5GB of wildcard) are in a bit of a slump, a week after they looked great.  A week ago, they were coming off winning two of three from the Rockies and were two back of the wild card itself.  Now, they lost two of three to the Astros and then the same to the Braves on the road and are in third in the division and fell behind in the wild card as well.  Lucky for them, the Mets are coming to town to let them get healthy against the pained Mets.  FishGuts has more on the series.

The New York Mets(57-68, 4th in NL East 16.5GB) wonder what can possibly happen next.  This weekend they may have lost their ace, Johan Santana, their right fielder Jeff Francouer and they lost a game on a triple play.  The team on the field is absolutely unrecognizable to a Mets fan, and as a Mets fan, I can’t wait until the offseason. The Real Dirty Mets Blog is your place to go for more information on the Mets.

Probable pitching matchups are below but also check out Chatter Up! between these blogs:

Tuesday @ 7:10PM EST – Figueroa,NYM(1-2,6.30 ERA) vs. West,FLA(4-5,4.70 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:10PM EST – Pelfrey,NYM(9-8,4.67 ERA) vs. Johnson,FLA(12-3,2.99 ERA)
Thursday @ 1:10PM EST – Redding,NYM(1-4,6.10 ERA) vs. Sanchez,FLA(2-4,4.97 ERA)
Nationals Logo VS Cubs Logo
The Washington Nationals(44-81, 5th in NL East 29.5GB) seem to be back to the Nationals of early in the season with Manny Acta again.  Bad defense, bad pitching, and now losing six of seven games.  A few weeks ago, Riggleman looked like a shoe-in to get the permament job, and now i’m not so sure! CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats, be sure to check them out.

The Chicago Cubs(62-60, 2nd in NL Central 8GB, 7.5GB of Wildcard) are having a dismal second half of this season.  After the all-star break, it was promising that they would be able to take the NL Central, but after this past weekend, they are now eight games out of the division and almost the same from the wildcard.  The Dodgers took three of four from them immediately after losing two of three to the Padres all on the road.  They hope they can take some games from the last place Nationals this week.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 8:05PM EST – Mock,WAS(2.5,5.10 ERA) vs. Zambrano,CHI(7-4,3.35 ERA)
Wednesday @ 8:05PM EST – Martin,WAS(2-3,4.76 ERA) vs. Harden,CHI(8-7,4.04 ERA)
Thursday @ 2:20PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-9,4.03 ERA) vs. Wells,CHI(9-6,2.84 ERA)

Phillies Logo VS Mets Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(69-49, 1st in NL East) are coming into this Mets series playing some of their best baseball of the year.  The problem is, they don’t need their best baseball this time, as the Mets are completely depleted.  The Phillies have won eight of nine games since being swept by the Marlins two weekends ago and find themselves with their lead in the division back to 6.5 games.  Can the Phillies get as fired up to play the Mets as they always can, even though they are so far apart? Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The New York Mets(56-65, 4th in NL East 14.5GB) just want to get through the year without more controversy and injury.  This week alone, they lost another player to injury (Wright), released Livan Hernandez, activated Billy Wagner, but had a blow up from Sheffield.  At the least this gives people things to write and talk about in an otherwise dismal year for the Mets.  Can they play a bit of a spoiler this weekend?  The Real Dirty Mets Blog will have more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-7,4.69 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-8,4.75 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Happ,PHI(9-2,2.66 ERA) vs. Redding,NYM(1-4,6.53 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Martinez,PHI(1-0,4.50 ERA) vs. Perez,NYM(3-3,6.06 ERA)
Monday @ 1:10PM EST – Lee,PHI(11-9,2.72 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(3-5,4.74 ERA)
Marlins Logo VS Braves Logo
The Florida Marlins(64-57, 2nd in NL East 6.5GB, 4GB of wildcard) could not take care of business this week against a weak opponent and therefore lost ground in both races.  The Astros were able to take two of three games from the Marlins in Houston, and both the Phillies and Colorado Rockies swept their sets to push them into a tie with the Braves in both races at 6.5 games back.  They need to rebound and get some help from other teams this weekend. FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Atlanta Braves(64-57, 2nd in NL East 6.5GB, 4GB of wildcard) did exactly what they had to this week in New York and won the series.  It did not look good as they blew a four run lead in the first game but rebounded very well in game two and even beating Johan Santana in the third game.  They continue a division rival week as they welcome in the Marlins who they are tied with currently to see who comes out ahead after the series.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Sanchez,FLA(1-4,5.55 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-8,2.99 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:00PM EST – Volstad,FLA(9-9,4.61 ERA) vs. Hanson,ATL(8-2,3.05 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:30PM EST – Nolasco,FLA(9-8,5.22 ERA) vs. Lowe,ATL(12-8,4.45 ERA)
Brewers Logo VS Nationals Logo
The Washington Nationals(43-78, 5th in NL East 27.5GB) came out of a solid weekend where they rebounded from a three game losing streak to win the final three of a four game set in Cincinnati.  They then welcomed in the Wild card leading Rockies and lost all three to them to get back into a losing streak.  They will be the only National League East team not playing a division rival this weekend as they welcome in the Brew-Crew.  They hope to rebound again as they did last weekend, check out CenterfieldGate for more.

The Milwaukee Brewers(58-62, 4th in NL Central 10.5GB) are now completely floundering, losers of seven of their past ten games and falling to fourth as the Cardinals surge to the division lead.  They will hope to rebound and see if they can get any help from other teams this weekend, but likely spoiler is their best role throughout the season.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Looper,MIL(10-6,5.03 ERA) vs. Martin,WAS(2-2,4.61 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Burns,MIL(3-4,5.36 ERA) vs. Lannan,WAS(8-9,3.68 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – Parra,MIL(8-9,6.33 ERA) vs. Stammen,WAS(3-6,5.13 ERA)
Monday @ 4:35PM EST – Gallardo(11-10,3.56 ERA) vs. Balester,WAS(1-3,6.75 ERA)

D'backs Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(66-49, 1st in NL East) had a good weekend against the Braves and put a slight bit of distance between those two teams now.  The Marlins also won two out of three games, so the Marlins still stand 4.5 games back, so the Phillies still have a fire lit under them.  This week, they begin by welcoming in the Arizona Diamondbacks who they took two out of three from late last month.  The Phillies are coming off a strong week, going 5-1 with a series victory this weekend and a sweep in Chicago last week.  They hope that Pedro Martinez can give another solid outting and the rest of the offense will begin to help Ryan Howard throughout this series. Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(54-65, 4th in NL West 16GB) re playing well of late, except for a series sweep in Washington last weekend.  They beat the Mets two of three games last weekend and then even took two out of three from the division leading National League West Dodgers this past weekend.  They lost a makeup game to the the Braves and  will make a trip to Houston to end the week.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:05PM EST – Garland,ARI(6-10,4.28 ERA) vs. Martinez,PHI(1-0,5.40 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:05PM EST – Haren,ARI(12-7,2.50 ERA) vs. Lee,PHI(10-9,2.86 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:05PM EST – Davis,ARI(7-10,3.59 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(7-6,3.88 ERA)
Marlins Logo VS Astros Logo
The Florida Marlins(63-55, 2nd in NL East 4.5GB, 2GB of wildcard) had a successful weekend at home, taking two of three from the wildcard leading Rockies.  This was immediately after a week in which they came off a sweep of the Phillies and followed that for three of four from the Astros at home.  This combines to give them a 8-2 since being swept by the Washington Nationals.  They have a favorable schedule coming up to gain ground in the division and wildcard coming up, starting with three at the Astros this week. FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Houston Astros(57-61, 4th in NL Central 10GB) are now back to being sellers and playing for next year.  Just a few weeks ago, it was possible they could make a run for the wildcard and very possibly the division, but this has changed.  Losers of five of seven games, the Astros have even recently traded away catcher Pudge Rodriguez to the Rangers for two minor leaguers.  One bright spot is that they did recently get Lance Berkman back from the disabled list.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 8:05PM EST – Nolasco,FLA(8-8,5.44 ERA) vs. Norris,HOU(3-0,3.00 ERA)
Wednesday @ 8:05PM EST – West,FLA(4-4,4.57 ERA) vs. Bazardo,HOU(0-0,5.06 ERA)
Thursday @ 8:05PM EST – Johnson,FLA(12-2,2.85 ERA) vs. Rodriguez,HOU(11-7,3.05 ERA)
Braves Logo VS Mets Logo
The Atlanta Braves(62-56, 3rd in NL East 5.5GB 3GB of wildcard) had a rough weekend against the Phillies after climbing back into both the divisional and wildcard races in the National League.  They were hurt by Ryan Howard against the Phillies as he produced all four runs last night and hit the eventual winning home run on Friday.  They still only stand 6 games back of the division and 3.5 back of the wildcard.  They were able to then rebound and take the only game against the Diamondbacks in a makeup from May.They now head to NY to face the Mets and  The Braves Baseball Blog has more on both series.

The New York Mets(55-63, 4th in NL East 12.5GB) can not get a break this season when it comes to injuries.  This past weekend in a very scary moment, David Wright was hit in the head with a pitch in an eventual loss against the Giants.  They were able to rebound and win one for him the next day but could not finish off a series win last night.  The Mets will continue to play out the string, even as the Disabled list rises and a victory now means “no new injuries” to them.   The Real Dirty Mets Blog is your place to go for more information on the Mets.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:10PM EST – Lowe,ATL(12-7,4.08 ERA) vs. Perez,NYM(2-3,5.97 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:10PM EST – Jurrjens,ATL(9-8,2.99 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(3-4,3.50 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:10PM EST – Kawakami,ATL(5-9,4.13 ERA) vs. Santana,NYM(13-8,3.10 ERA)
Rockies Logo VS Nats Logo
The Washington Nationals(43-75, 5th in NL East 24.5GB) were able to turn around a small losing streak of three games after an eight game winning streak.  This was new thing to see out of this Nationals team.  They were able to take the final three games against the Reds and the offense seems to have restarted itself.  They now will go into a pretty big test for a team that may have found its way, facing the wildcard leading Rockies.  There are a couple teams in the division though that will be big Nats fans this week, hoping the Nats can do them a solid. CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats, be sure to check them out.

The Colorado Rockies(63-53, 2nd in NL West, 1st in Wildcard) look to use this matchup against the last place Nationals to gain back the game they lost this weekend in the wildcard standings.  The Rockies took two of three and exploited the Rockies pitching while gaining a game on them in the wildcard and not allowing them to put any distance with others as well.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:05PM EST – Jimenez,COL(10-9,3.47 ERA) vs. Stammen,WAS(3-6,5.24 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:05PM EST – Marquis,COL(13-8,3.55 ERA) vs. Balester,WAS(1-2,6.00 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:05PM EST – Hammel,COL(7-7,4.73 ERA) vs. Mock,WAS(2-4,5.27 ERA)

Phillies Logo VS Braves Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(64-48, 1st in NL East) may have finally figured out their troubles since the trade deadline this week.  This week, after being swept by the Marlins, the offense may have finally come back to life during a three game set in Chicago.  Cliff Lee has been outstanding as he has three wins in as many games and even Ben Francisco was the hero for a night on Monday.  They will look to put some space between themselves and the third place Braves and do better against a division rival than they did last weekend.  Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Atlanta Braves(60-54, 3rd in NL East 5GB, 3.5GB of wildcard) have won five straight and seven out of eight games.  It started last week with a west coast swing where they took two of three from the lowly Padres and then were able to take three out of four from the Dodgers and gain ground in the playoffs races.  This week they swept the Nats in a two game set and will hope to stay close in both playoff races.  Martin Prado and Yunel Escobar are still on fire for the Braves and they hope Nate McClouth will be back soon as he has been day to day. The Braves Baseball Blog has more info on the series and the game.

Be sure to check back for the Chatter Up! Between these two blogs today.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Blanton,PHI(7-6,4.02 ERA) vs. Jurrjens,ATL(9-8,3.01 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:00PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-7,4.77 ERA) vs. Kawakami,ATL(5-9,4.12 ERA)
Sunday @ 8:00PM EST – Happ,PHI(8-2,2.75 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-7,2.90 ERA)
Rockies Logo VS Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlins(61-54, 2nd in NL East 4.5GB, 3GB of wildcard) seemed to get a wakeup call last week when they were swept by the Nationals.  Since that time, they are 6-1 including a series sweep last weekend of the division leading Phillies.  They took three of four from the Astros this week and head into a VERY important series.  They welcome in the wildcard leading Colorado Rockies for three games and could potentially leave town being tied for the wildcard if they can pull off a sweep.  They will send Josh Johnson to the mound in the opener, so that is working for them.  FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Colorado Rockies(64-51 2nd in NL West 5GB, 1st in NL Wildcard) have been on fire since the All-Star break except for a rough patch against the Phillies a week ago.  This week they came off a three of four from the Cubs and finished with two of three at home against the Pirates with three large wins.  The Rox are currently leading the wildcard, but they do have teams hot on their tail, including the Giants at only 1.5 gmaes back, the Marlins as mentioned above and the Braves only 3.5 games back.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Hammel,COL(7-6,4.66 ERA) vs. Johnson,FLA(11-2,2.92 ERA)
Saturday @ 6:10PM EST – Cook,COL(10-4,3.93 ERA) vs. VandenHurk,FLA(2-1,4.15 ERA)
Sunday @ 5:05PM EST – De La Rosa,COL(10-8,4.78 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(8-9,4.71 ERA)
Giants Logo VS Mets Logo
The New York Mets(61-54, 4th in NL East 12GB) have a lot of red L’s on the schedule for the past few weeks.  The talks of the team not shaving until they made it to .500 are long gone as over the past 13 games are only 4-9 and the schedule has not been that difficult.  They have lost those games to the Diamondbacks and Padres mainly with a couple against the Central division leading Cardinals for two.  the injuries don’t appear to end for the Mets, and this week they found out Delgado may also be done for the year.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog is your place to go for more information on the Mets.
The San Francisco Giants(62-52, 3rd in NL West 6.5GB, 2nd in Wildcard 1.5GB) have hit rough times in the past week and with that, fell out of the wildcard lead.  The Giants lose two of three to the Reds last weekend and then followed that up with a series loss to the Dodgers, but did take the final game on their way to New York.  They will hope their pitching continues to impress in this series and going forward as they do extend after this four game set to Cincinnati and finally on to the Rockies next weekend.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Zito,SF(8-10,4.40 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(2-4,3.94 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:10PM EST – Cain,SF(12-4,2.44 ERA) vs. Santana,NYM(13-8,3.00 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Sanchez,SF(5-10,4.61 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-8,4.88 ERA)
Monday @ 7:10PM EST – Martinez,SF(2-1,6.00 ERA) vs. Hernandez,NYM(7-7,5.28 ERA)
Nationals Logo VS Reds Logo
The Washington Nationals(40-74, 5th in NL East 24.5GB) followed up their eight game winning streak by losing two games in a row by a combined 14-3 score. Whatever had gotten into their bats definitely made its way right back out during this past two game set against the Braves. They will now travel for Cincinnati to begin a four game set against the Reds and hope their hitting and pitching can go back to last week’s levels. In The Great American Ballpark, they certainly have a good chance of getting some hits, but the pitching could still struggle. CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats, be sure to check them out.

The Cincinnati Reds(49-64, 5th in NL Central 13.5GB) are one of many teams who have already wrote off the season and you may even see more trades from. Oddly, they did make a few trades at the deadline, but unless they go on an insane winning streak, they will not sniff the playoffs. They will send a pitcher to the mound in this series that has been the subject of trade talks for a while, Bronson Arroyo and likely their closer Francisco Cordero will be seen too, who also has been in rumors.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Thursday @ 7:10PM EST – Reds 7 Nationals 0
Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Mock,WAS(1-4,6.14 ERA) vs. Harang,CIN(6-13,4.43 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Martin,WAS(1-2,5.91 ERA) vs. Cueto,CIN(8-9,4.23 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-9,3.58 ERA) vs. Lehr,CIN(2-0,1.80 ERA)

Phillies Logo VS Cubs Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(61-48, 1st in NL East) have actually not been very good since they acquired Cliff Lee at the deadline.  Cliff Lee is 2-0 and J.A. Happ has one win, but that is all as the Phillies were most recently swept by the Marlins.  Some of the bigger news out of Philly was the controversial ejection of Shane Victorino from centerfield and Pedro Martinez making his 2009 debut as Jamie Moyer goes to the pen. Check out Phillies Phandom for more on both of these issues and the series at hand.

The Chicago Cubs(58-52, 2nd in NL Central 3GB, 3GB in WildCard) were shot down pretty hard this weekend as they lost three out of four to the Rockies to lose ground in both the wildcard and divisional races.  The final two games they lost by a combined score of 22-10 and even though the Phillies lost three in a row, this isn’t a welcome matchup for the Cubbies.  They will hope to gain ground in both races, as they are an equal amount out in each.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 8:05PM EST – Happ,PHI(8-2,2.74 ERA) vs. Harden,CHI(7-7,4.41 ERA)
Wednesday @ 8:05PM EST – Martinez,PHI(0-0,- ERA) vs. Samardzija,CHI(1-1,6.29 ERA)
Thursday @ 2:20PM EST – Lee,PHI(9-9,2.95 ERA) vs. Dempster,CHI(6-5,4.04 ERA)
Astros Logo VS Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlins(58-53, 2nd in NL East 4GB, 3GB in WildCard) reassured their fans that they don’t plan on fading out of this race after a dismal showing in Washington last week. The Florida Marlins went into the city of brotherly love this weekend and swept the Phillies to pull back within four games of the lead. They did this with solid pitching, timely hitting and by finally getting to their nemesis, Jamie Moyer. They will hope to get closer to the division and wildcard this week as they welcome in the bubble riding Houston Astros for a four game set. FishGuts has all the info on this series and more.

The Houston Astros(55-56, 3rd in NL Central, 6GB of wild card) continue to flounder in between competing and playing for next year. Just when you are about to count them out, they will take a series and play well enough to be considered a contender. They currently come into this series six games back of both divisional and wildcard races after an up and down week, ending by taking two of three from the division rival Milwaukee Brewers to pull into a third place tie with them.

Note: At this point Mike Hampton is scheduled to make his start on Thursday despite a torn meniscus in his knee, so this could change.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Monday @ 7:10PM EST – Marlins 8 Astros 6
Tuesday @ 7:10PM EST – Oswalt,HOU(6-4,3.61 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(8-9,4.48 ERA)
Wednesday@ 7:10PM EST-Norris,HOU(2-0,1.69 ERA) vs. Nolasco,FLA(8-7,4.86 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:10PM EST -Hampton,HOU(7-9,5.30 ERA) vs. West,FLA(3-4,4.88 ERA)
Nats Logo VS Braves Logo
The Atlanta Braves(58-54, 3rd in NL East 4.5GB, 4GB of Wild Card) head into the series with the Washington Nationals in a way which many probably did not expect.  The Braves have won five of six while on a west coast string against the Padres and finally four against the Dodgers.  They played great against the Dodgers and may actually have a tougher task in front of them, in the Washington Nationals.  The Braves were also able to gain ground on the Phillies this weekend as the Marlins helped their cause in sweeping them. The Braves Baseball Blog will have more information on the Braves for you.

The Washington Nationals(40-72, 5th in NL East 22.5GB) are absolutely on fire.  They have now won eight straight games and their hitting carried them this weekend, and even had some good pitching to boot.  Ryan Zimmerman, Elijah Dukes, Christian Guzman are hitting everything that comes their way and the others on the team aren’t too shabby either.  They may not be in contention for the playoffs, but this late streak at least makes them assured they won’t break the record for most losses this year and hopefully gives Nats fans a warm feeling for next year.  Check out Centerfieldgate for more information on the Nationals.

Check the latest Chatter Up! for a back and forth with the teams!

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:00 PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-8,3.39 ERA) vs. Hanson,ATL(6-2,3.22 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:00PM EST – Stammen,WAS(11-7,4,15 ERA) vs. Lowe,ATL(11-7,4.15 ERA)
Mets Logo VS D'Backs Logo
The New York Mets(52-59, 4th in NL East 10GB, 9GB of Wild Card) are enduring yet another grueling west coast trip this year. Sunday’s win in San Diego was their first in their last eight tries against an opponent in California dating back to May. Lucky(or not?) for them, they enter Arizona this week where they are outstanding over the past few seasons, dating back to 2006. They at the least need better results than they received a couple weekends ago when the D’Backs took three of four from the Mets in New York just after the Mets had played a few solid games straight. Check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more Mets information.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(50-62, 4th in NL West 17GB) were on quite a roll while entering the Nations capital this past weekend. That all stopped as the Washington Nationals beat them in three straight and left them reeling, defeating even their ace Danny Haren on the way. They do have continued success from Mark Reynolds who now has 36 home runs for the Diamondbacks. The D’Backs hope returning home will help them get back to winning ways.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Monday @ 9:40PM EST – Diamondbacks 7 Mets 4
Tuesday @ 9:40PM EST – Hernandez,NYM(7-6,5.08 ERA) vs. Scherzer,ARI(6-6,4.01 ERA)
Wednesday @ 3:40PM EST – Perez,NYM(2-3,6.38 ERA) vs. Garland,ARI(6-10,4.33 ERA)
