Phillies vs. Reds

Phillies Reds BaseballThe Phillies fell to the Reds 4-3 in their series finale Wednesday afternoon. Philadelphia took a 3-0 lead in the 4th inning thanks to a three-run home run by Dane Sardinha.  The Phillies bats were quiet for the remainder of the game, only recording three hits after the the 4th. The Reds began to chip away scoring a run on a Joey Votto homer in the 6th and again on a RBI single by Orlando Cabrera in the 7th. The final blow came in the bottom of the 8th. Leading 3-2, Roy Halladay gave up a two-run shot to right field.

Halladay pitched a  complete game, but took the loss, his 7th of the season. He pitched 8 innings, giving up four runs on 13 hits. Reds starter, Aaron Harang, got a no decision, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. Reliever Arthur Rhodes got the win for Cincinnati. Marlins vs. Mets

97580653AB021_NEW_YORK_METSFollowing a rain delay, the Mets salvaged the final game of their series with the Marlins, winning 6-5. New York extended their lead to 4-2 in the 2nd on an RBI single by Jesus Feliciano. Florida tied up the ballgame in the 5th with a double by Jorge Cantu and a single by Uggla.  The Mets scored a run in the 6th and 7th innings, giving them a 6-4 lead. The Marlins cut the lead to 6-5  in the 8th on an RBI double by Gaby Sanchez.

Phillies Logo VS Braves Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(64-48, 1st in NL East) may have finally figured out their troubles since the trade deadline this week.  This week, after being swept by the Marlins, the offense may have finally come back to life during a three game set in Chicago.  Cliff Lee has been outstanding as he has three wins in as many games and even Ben Francisco was the hero for a night on Monday.  They will look to put some space between themselves and the third place Braves and do better against a division rival than they did last weekend.  Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Atlanta Braves(60-54, 3rd in NL East 5GB, 3.5GB of wildcard) have won five straight and seven out of eight games.  It started last week with a west coast swing where they took two of three from the lowly Padres and then were able to take three out of four from the Dodgers and gain ground in the playoffs races.  This week they swept the Nats in a two game set and will hope to stay close in both playoff races.  Martin Prado and Yunel Escobar are still on fire for the Braves and they hope Nate McClouth will be back soon as he has been day to day. The Braves Baseball Blog has more info on the series and the game.

Be sure to check back for the Chatter Up! Between these two blogs today.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Blanton,PHI(7-6,4.02 ERA) vs. Jurrjens,ATL(9-8,3.01 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:00PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-7,4.77 ERA) vs. Kawakami,ATL(5-9,4.12 ERA)
Sunday @ 8:00PM EST – Happ,PHI(8-2,2.75 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-7,2.90 ERA)
Rockies Logo VS Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlins(61-54, 2nd in NL East 4.5GB, 3GB of wildcard) seemed to get a wakeup call last week when they were swept by the Nationals.  Since that time, they are 6-1 including a series sweep last weekend of the division leading Phillies.  They took three of four from the Astros this week and head into a VERY important series.  They welcome in the wildcard leading Colorado Rockies for three games and could potentially leave town being tied for the wildcard if they can pull off a sweep.  They will send Josh Johnson to the mound in the opener, so that is working for them.  FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Colorado Rockies(64-51 2nd in NL West 5GB, 1st in NL Wildcard) have been on fire since the All-Star break except for a rough patch against the Phillies a week ago.  This week they came off a three of four from the Cubs and finished with two of three at home against the Pirates with three large wins.  The Rox are currently leading the wildcard, but they do have teams hot on their tail, including the Giants at only 1.5 gmaes back, the Marlins as mentioned above and the Braves only 3.5 games back.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Hammel,COL(7-6,4.66 ERA) vs. Johnson,FLA(11-2,2.92 ERA)
Saturday @ 6:10PM EST – Cook,COL(10-4,3.93 ERA) vs. VandenHurk,FLA(2-1,4.15 ERA)
Sunday @ 5:05PM EST – De La Rosa,COL(10-8,4.78 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(8-9,4.71 ERA)
Giants Logo VS Mets Logo
The New York Mets(61-54, 4th in NL East 12GB) have a lot of red L’s on the schedule for the past few weeks.  The talks of the team not shaving until they made it to .500 are long gone as over the past 13 games are only 4-9 and the schedule has not been that difficult.  They have lost those games to the Diamondbacks and Padres mainly with a couple against the Central division leading Cardinals for two.  the injuries don’t appear to end for the Mets, and this week they found out Delgado may also be done for the year.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog is your place to go for more information on the Mets.
The San Francisco Giants(62-52, 3rd in NL West 6.5GB, 2nd in Wildcard 1.5GB) have hit rough times in the past week and with that, fell out of the wildcard lead.  The Giants lose two of three to the Reds last weekend and then followed that up with a series loss to the Dodgers, but did take the final game on their way to New York.  They will hope their pitching continues to impress in this series and going forward as they do extend after this four game set to Cincinnati and finally on to the Rockies next weekend.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Zito,SF(8-10,4.40 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(2-4,3.94 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:10PM EST – Cain,SF(12-4,2.44 ERA) vs. Santana,NYM(13-8,3.00 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Sanchez,SF(5-10,4.61 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-8,4.88 ERA)
Monday @ 7:10PM EST – Martinez,SF(2-1,6.00 ERA) vs. Hernandez,NYM(7-7,5.28 ERA)
Nationals Logo VS Reds Logo
The Washington Nationals(40-74, 5th in NL East 24.5GB) followed up their eight game winning streak by losing two games in a row by a combined 14-3 score. Whatever had gotten into their bats definitely made its way right back out during this past two game set against the Braves. They will now travel for Cincinnati to begin a four game set against the Reds and hope their hitting and pitching can go back to last week’s levels. In The Great American Ballpark, they certainly have a good chance of getting some hits, but the pitching could still struggle. CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats, be sure to check them out.

The Cincinnati Reds(49-64, 5th in NL Central 13.5GB) are one of many teams who have already wrote off the season and you may even see more trades from. Oddly, they did make a few trades at the deadline, but unless they go on an insane winning streak, they will not sniff the playoffs. They will send a pitcher to the mound in this series that has been the subject of trade talks for a while, Bronson Arroyo and likely their closer Francisco Cordero will be seen too, who also has been in rumors.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Thursday @ 7:10PM EST – Reds 7 Nationals 0
Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Mock,WAS(1-4,6.14 ERA) vs. Harang,CIN(6-13,4.43 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Martin,WAS(1-2,5.91 ERA) vs. Cueto,CIN(8-9,4.23 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-9,3.58 ERA) vs. Lehr,CIN(2-0,1.80 ERA)

Feliz Powers Phils

Feliz Powers Phils

The Phillies started this homestand on July 3rd with a terrible record at home, especially for a 1st place team in July of a season.  They changed that with a 9-1 homestand which was capped by a series sweep of the Pirates this weekend.  Pedro Feliz hit his 6th home run of the season and 6th grand slam of his career in the first inning, giving J.A. Happ and the Phillies pitching all the runs they would need in winning 5-2.  Happ(6-0) finished a very solid first half,  with his sixth win against zero losses while starting the year in relief and finishing the half as likely Philly’s most solid starter.  The Phillies will go into the break with a four game division lead, check out Phillies Phandom for more Philly info.

Virgil Vasquez(1-3) took the loss for the Pirates and after a solid debut for the Pirates, has lost three straight starts.

Johnson stays strong

Johnson stays strong

Josh Johnson made sure to show that he is absolutely deserving of the All-Star nod he got a week ago, with another very solid start on Sunday.  Johnson(8-2) got his eighth win of the year while pitching into the seventh allowing eight hits and one run, while striking out seven batters.  He was helped by some early runs by the Marlins hitting with Cody Ross delivering a bases clearing double in the first, and the Marlins led 6-1 when he left the game and won 8-1 at the end of the day.  Florida had been only one game back of first nine days ago, but faltered slightly as the Phillies stayed hot going into the break.  Most of their team and especially relief pitching will get their much needed break this week before getting back to the grind.

Doug Davis(4-9) only lasted four innings on Sunday as he gave up five runs on three walks and seven hits and a home run for the loss.

Hawpe delivers before the ASG

Hawpe delivers before the ASG

The Braves took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning yesterday in Denver, in what would turn out to be a back and forth game between the teams.  The Rockies steadily fought back scoring single runs in the second, third, fourth and eighth while sprinkling in three runs in the seventh and the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.  First time All-Star Brad Hawpe hit a double with the game tied in the ninth which scored Seth Smith to give the Rockies the 8-7 win and sending the Braves to the break on a sour note.  Huston Street(3-1) got the win in relief as he pitched a perfect ninth of the inning before the Braves won the game.  The two teams used a total of thirteen pitchers, so those pitchers are very happy to see the break come so they can rest up.

Luis Valdez(0-1) took the loss while giving up the game winning hits and runs in the ninth inning for the Braves.  Check out the Braves Baseball Blog for more on this.

Schneider ends the drought

Schneider ends the drought

The New York Mets did what seemed the impossible this weekend, and won a series and at the same time, winning the rubber game.  Taking two out of three from the Reds will go down as only their second series victory since the beginning of June.  Mike Pelfrey(7-4) pitched seven strong innings giving up three earned runs and leaving with a 9-3 lead, but the Mets bullpen made it interesting before giving him the win.  Sean Green and Pedro Feliciano couldn’t get out of the eighth inning with a single out before Bobby Parnell had to come in and save them, but not before allowing three runs, all charged to Sean Green.  Francisco Rodriguez worked a shaky ninth inning giving up a run, a hit and a walk before retiring the side for his 23rd save of the first half and a 9-7 Mets victory.   Check out The Real Dirty Mets blog for more Mets info.

Aaron Harang(5-9) once again could not get the win in a start, getting his ninth loss while giving up five runs in just three innings pitched.

Valverde looks funny in glasses

Valverde looks funny in glasses

The Washington Nationals continue have trouble winning games, and did just that on Sunday afternoon in Houston.  Brian Moehler(6-5) shut the Nats down for 6.1 innings while allowing seven hits and two runs en route to a 5-0 Astros win.  For a while it looked like Miguel Tejada’s RBI single in the first would hold up, but Kaz Matsui gave some insurance runs in the seventh with a three run homer.  Jose Valverde worked the ninth inning with a strike out and a hit to get his eighth save this season for the ‘Stros.

Jordan Zimmermann(3-4) also worked 6.1 innings for the Nats but was charged with four of the five runs the Astros got and now has a losing record for the Nationals.  Late last night, Manny Acta was fired by the Nationals after his team’s 26-61 start to the season., read more about that and the Nationals at CenterfieldGate.

Pirates Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(45-38, 1st in NL East) took three out of four from the Reds this week.  They decided after playing one game that could have had the mercy rule to play some real baseball though in their other two wins.  They were also able to extend their lead in the division with the faltering play of the other teams.  Check out Phillies Phandom for more Philadelphia insight.

The Pirates(38-47, 6th in NL Central 8GB) come into this weekend losers of five of their last seven.  They will hope to put up a fight against a hot Philly team and to stay close enough to make a move in their own division.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Duke,PIT(8-7,3.28 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(5-4,4.69 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Ohlendorf,PIT(7-7,4.63 ERA) vs. Hamels,PHI(5-5,4.70 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST -Vasquez,PIT(1-2,4.50 ERA) vs. Happ,PHI(5-0,3.04 ERA)

The Florida Marlins(44-42, 2nd in NL East 2GB) really need All-Star shortstop and slugger Hanley Ramirez to get healthy quick.  They did take the final game of a three game set in San Francisco, but their offense is much different with him out of the lineup.  The Marlins are still only two games back of the Phillies for first place, but they will need to find ways to win without Hanley to keep pace.  They head to Arizona this weekend in hopes of getting closer to first place.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(36-49, 4th in NL West 17.5GB) are hot right now, winners of five straight games, including a sweep of the Padres this week.  They will look to stay hot, but are currently thirteen games under .500 and 10.5 games back of even the wild card in the National League.  At this point, you need to wonder if they are already out of it?

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Thursday @ 9:40PM EST – Miller,FLA(3-4,4.42 ERA) vs. Petit,ARI(0-3,8.46 ERA)
Friday @ 9:40PM EST – Nolasco,FLA(6-6,5.42 ERA) vs. Haren,ARI(8-5,2.16 ERA)
Saturday @ 8:10PM EST – West,FLA(3-3,4.47 ERA) vs. Garland,ARI(4-8,4.80 ERA)
Sunday @ 4:10PM EST – Johnson,FLA(7-2,2.82 ERA) vs. Davis,ARI(4-8,3.13 ERA)
Braves Logo vs_120x120 Rockies Logo
The Braves(41-43, third in NL East 4GB) were able to rebound from a letdown weekend in Washington where they lost two out of three games after pulling within two of first place.  They won the final two games in Chicago against the Cubs to put them alone in third place for the time being and only be four games back of Philly and two under .500 for the season.  They will hope to rely on their starting pitching and solid bullpen this weekend in the hitters park that is Coors Field.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more information on the Bravos.

Colorado(45-39, third in NL West 8GB) improved to six games above .500 and continued their hot play since the manager change this week.  They were able to sweep the Washington Nationals using different game plans this week.  One game was won via great pitching, another via bad defense for the Nats and one with clutch hitting.  They hope to march toward the wildcard lead this weekend against the Braves.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Thursday @ 8:40PM EST – Hanson,ATL(4-0,2.25 ERA) vs. Cook,COL(8-3,3.76 ERA)
Friday @ 8:40PM EST – Lowe,ATL(7-7,4.56 ERA) vs. Jimenez,COL(6-8,3.86 ERA)
Saturday@8:10PM EST-Jurrjens,ATL(6-7,2.91 ERA) vs. Marquis,COL(11-5,3.61 ERA)
Sunday @ EST – Vazquez,ATL(6-7,2.95 ERA) vs. Hammel,COL(5-4,4.07 ERA)

The New York Mets(40-44, 4th in NL East 5.5GB) mercifully took one out of three from the Dodgers this week at home in Citi Field. Its quite obvious that the injuries have taken a toll on this team and the team and fans are likely not sure what to do next.  They hope to stay close going into the much needed All-Star break, but check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more Mets articles.

The Reds(41-43, 5th in NL Central 4.5GB) as mentioned above have just lost three of four to the Phillies.  They also are in a similar position as the Mets, sans the injuries in that they are hoping even with a mediocre first half, to close strong and have a play for the division.

Probable pitching matchups below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Arroyo,CIN(8-8,5.85 ERA) vs. Nieve,NYM(3-2,2.73 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Cueto,CIN(8-5,3.45 ERA) vs. Santana,NYM(9-7,3.29 ERA)

Nationals Logo vs_120x120 hou_120x120
The Washington Nationals(24-58, 5th in NL East 20GB)  continue to give their fans little bits of hope and then dash them away a few days later.  Over the weekend, they cooled off the Atlanta Braves by taking two out of three games and had some high hopes going to Colorado.  Once they got to Colorado, the Rockies swept them right out of town, and the Nats defense was also on display, but not in a good way.  They hope that a matchup with the Houston Astros will heal some of their wounds.  Check out CenterfieldGate for more information during the series between the teams.

The Astros(41-42, 5th in NL Central 3.5GB) are 6-4 in their last ten and currently sit only 3.5 games back in the competitive National League Central.  They are fresh off a series in against Pittsburgh and have won three out of four games.

This series features the completion of a suspended game from May prior to the game Thursday.  That game was suspended in the 12th inning in Washington and since Houston would not be returning to Washington, they will play it in Houston, with the Nationals being the home team until that finishes.

Probable pitching matchups are listed below:

Thursday @ 8:05PM EST – Lannan,WAS(6-5,3.45 ERA) vs. Ortiz,HOU(3-4,4.11 ERA)
Friday @ 8:05PM EST – Olsen,WAS(2-4,6.04 ERA) vs. Oswalt,HOU(5-4,3.81 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Stammen,WAS(1-4,4.88 ERA) vs. Hampton,HOU(5-5,4.16 ERA)
Sunday @ 2:05PM EST- Zimmermann,WAS(3-3,4.52 ERA) vs. Moehler,HOU(5-5,5.52 ERA)

The Philadelphia Phillies were able to get some confidence by playing the beaten up Mets this weekend at home.  They swept the Mets while only allowing them to score three total runs in three games, including a shutout on Sunday afternoon.  The sweep secured that the Phillies(42-37, 1st in NL East) would stay all alone in first place as they welcome in the Cincinnati Reds this week.   It also appears that Jimmy Rollins has found his stroke, as he went 5/11 with three walks, five RBI and two runs scored including a leadoff homerun in Sundays’ game.  If he can continue it would be a huge lift to the Phillies, as they also hope to get All-Star Raul Ibanez back this week.  The Phillies will need that as well as continued solid starts from their pitchers as they got this weekend against the Mets.  Phillies Phandom will have more of the Phillies news you crave.

The Cincinnati Reds(40-40, 4th in NL Central 3GB) are 6-4 in their past ten games and despite being a .500 team, are only three games back of first place in the National League Central.  They had the chance over the weekend to make some noise in the division, but lost two of three to the current division leading St. Louis Cardinals, hurt by a terrible outting by Arroyo on Sunday.  They will hope to stay within striking distance in this series.

The probable pitching matchups are shown below:

The Florida Marlins appear to be getting things together and they hope this isn’t another tease as their season start was.  The Marlins(43-40, 2nd in NL East 1GB) won five out of six games this week and going into Friday night’s games were actually virtually tied for first.  They won two out of three this weekend and dropped out of the tie, but are alone in second place and only one full game behind the Phillies.  They have had some brilliant starting pitching, including the revival of Ricky Nolasco and of course the very hot bat of All-Star Hanley Ramirez leading the way.  They hope to stay close or even pass the Phillies for first place by the all-star break, starting with a west coast swing in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Giants(44-37, 2nd in NL West 7.5GB) may be a whopping 7.5GB of the Dodgers a week before the All-Star break but they lead the National League wild card by 1.5 games.  This comes as a surprise to many, but the pitching has been top notch for the Giants.  They hope to continue that and put young Matt Cain to the mound to start the series tonight.

The probable pitching matchups are below:

Monday @ 10:15PM EST – West,FLA(3-2,4.06 ERA) vs. Cain,SF(9-2,2.48 ERA)
Tuesday @ 10:15PM EST – Johnson,FLA(7-1,2.76 ERA) vs. Zito,SF(4-8,4.82 ERA)
Wednesday @ 3:45PM EST – Volstad,FLA(5-8,4.85 ERA) vs. Sadowski,SF(2-0,0 ERA)

The Mets are reeling right now, and seeing the Dodgers with newly reinstated Manny Ramirez come to town is probably not what they want to see.  The Mets(39-42, 3rd in NL East 4GB) are coming off a ten game stretch where they went 2-8 including a three game sweep at the hands of the Phillies.  It seems like nothing is going right for the Mets when they had two losses given to Johan Santana this week and can barely manage any offense.  They have a slew of players on the disabled list, but they will get Oliver Perez back for Wednesday nights game, although no one is sure if that is a good thing.  Check The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more Mets info.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and seemingly everyone in baseball was celebrating the return of Manny Ramirez from a PED suspension.  He responded with a home run in his second game back before he was given the third day off to slow him back in.  The Dodgers(52-30, 1st in NL West) lead all of baseball in wins and have the largest division lead as well.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Tuesday @ 7:10PM EST -Kershaw,LAD(5-5,3.49 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(6-3,4.26 ERA)
Tuesday @ 7:10PM EST – Kuroda,LAD(3-4,3.91 ERA) vs. Perez,NYM(1-2,9.97 ERA)
Thursday @7:10PM EST-Wolf,LAD(3-3,3.49 ERA) vs. Hernandez,NYM(5-4,4.56 ERA)

The Atlanta Braves(39-42, 3rd in NL East 4GB) entered Washington on Friday on a four game winning streak, three of which in a series sweep of the division leading Phillies and only two games back of first.  They left Washington in a third place tie with the Mets and four games back of first place. Their relief pitching hurt them on Saturday and Sunday a former Marlin quieted their bats as they only started to come back in the ninth inning.  They hope a trip to Chicago will heal their wounds and allow them to roll into the final weekend of the first half on a a nice streak.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more info on the Braves.

The Chicago Cubs(40-39, 3rd in NL Central) have recently started to play better after being a very mediocre team for much of the season.  Many had them as the run away winners of the NL Central only for them to play around .500 baseball or worse for much of the year.  They hope to keep having solid play from Derek Lee as they did in a four game series win versus Milwaukee last week and get closer to 1st place.

The probable pitchers are below:

Monday @ 7:05PM EST – Jurrjens,ATL(6-6,2.73 ERA) vs. Wells,CHI(3-3,2.43 ERA)
Tuesday @ 8:05PM EST – Vazquez,ATL(5-7,3.05 ERA) vs. Dempster,CHI(5-5,4.09 ERA)
Wednesday @ 2:20PM EST – Kawakami,ATL(4-6,4.46 ERA) vs. Zambrano,CHI(4-3,3.50 ERA)

Finally, the Nationals(24-55, 5th in NL East 18GB) just took two out of three from the Braves after getting swept out of Miami before that.  They hope to keep riding their young, solid pitching in a tough park for a pitcher in Colorado this week.  One other solid from this weekend is it appears the Nats have found a closer, with Mike MacDougal getting another two saves now for them.  Adam Dunn also hit his 300th home run of his career as well as Ryan Zimmerman being named an all-star this weekend.  Check out CenterfieldGate for more Nationals news.

The Colorado Rockies(42-39, 3rd in NL East 9.5GB) are already fading from the division, but are still very much in the hunt for the wild card.  After winning 17 of 18 games once they changed managers, the Rockies are coming back down to earth. That streak though did help them have a much bigger chance of the offseason this year.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Monday @ 8:40PM EST – Stammen,WAS(1-3,5.44 ERA) vs. Marquis,COL(10-5,3.87 ERA)
Tuesday @ 8:40PM EST – Zimmermann,WAS(3-3,4.52 ERA) vs. Hammel,COL(5-4,3.90 ERA)
Wednesday @ 3:10PM EST – Detwiler,WAS(0-4,5.81 ERA) vs. De La Rosa,COL(5-7, 5.14 ERA)

Ryan Madson walks in the tying run

In Philadelphia, Ryan Madson walked in the tying run in the top of the 9th for his 1st blown save since taking over for the injured Brad Lidge.  The Blue Jays went on to win the game with a 5 run 10th inning, with all runs and the loss being charged to reliever Clay Condrey(4-2).  Scott Downs pitched a perfect ninth for the Blue Jays to pick up the win(1-0).  The Phillies look to bounce back tonight with Jamie Moyer facing off against Scott Richmond.

Huff pulls a Castillo

Huff pulls a Castillo

At Camden Yards in Baltimore, the Mets got help from three Oriole errors on their way to a 6-4 victory.  The Castillo error fresh in their minds, Aubrey Huff botched a fly ball in the 7th inning off a David Wright blooper.  Two runs scored on the play and they proved to be the winning runs.  A dicey ninth inning started by Bobby Parnell and finished off by Francisco Rodriguez made the game closer than it should have been.  Mike Pelfrey(5-2) got his first win since early May, Rodriguez picked up his 17th save and Jeremy Guthrie(4-7) took the loss.  The two teams meet back up tonight at 7:10pm with Tim Redding facing off against the O’s Koji Uehara.  For additional Mets information and news go to The Real Dirty Mets Blog.

Ortiz heating up?

Ortiz heating up?

The Marlins started a three game set against the Red Sox at classic Fenway Park in Boston.    This game was all Red Sox from the beginning as they had all the runs they needed by the 4th inning.  David Ortiz hit his 5th home run of the year, and he may finally be breaking out of his season long slump.  Chris Volstad(4-7) took the loss for the Marlins with only 3.2 Innings pitched and 8 ER and Tim Wakefield(9-3) earned the win.  Tonight Andrew Miller takes on former Marlin Brad Penny at 7:10PM.

Herrera gets his 1st win

Herrera gets his 1st win

In Cincinnati, the teams waited through  an almost 2 hour rain delay to take the opening game of the set from the Braves.  Danny Herrera went three innings in rain delay relief of Aaron Harang, who only went 2 innings.  It was Herrera’s 1st major league victory and it was helped out by 3 RBI from Lance Nix of the Reds.  Herrera(1-2) got the win and Jair Jurrjens(5-5) took the loss in only 2 IP with 2 ER.  Tonight the Braves send Javier Vazquez to the hill against Micah Owings to try to get out of a small funk.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more Braves information.

A-Hern can even hit a HR at Yankee stadium

A-Hern can even hit a HR at Yankee stadium

Finally, over at Yankee Stadium, Manny Acta(for now) and the Washington Nationals took on the New York Yankees.  Anderson Hernandez even took advantage of the winstream or whatever it is at Yankee Stadium causing balls to fly out and put the Nats in a temporary lead with a 3 run homer in the 5th.  This lead held up until the 7th when Ron Villone(3-4) of the Nats(16-46) bullpen coughed it up, sending them to their 46th loss of the year.  The Yankees(37-27) got almost 8 innings from their ace, C.C. Sabathia(6-4) for the win and Mariono Rivera got his 15th save of the year.  The David vs Goliath matchup continues tonight in the Bronx with John Lannon taking on Chien-Ming Wang.  For more Nationals news and information, go to CenterfieldGate.com
