Hi, everyone. Before I get started, I thought it might be good to introduce myself since I’m new to NLEast Chatter and you’re probably all wondering what the hell an ‘ubermet’ is. Good question. Fact is, I don’t even know. It’s a nickname someone gave me in high school or college or something and I guess it just stuck. I think it’s German or something. I’m not German though, so it’s all a bit unusual. I am a monster Met fan, however, so maybe it’s got something to do with that. Who knows. Nobody really calls me that, but I figured it’s a good nom de plume for this site.

At any rate, my real name is Al and I’m from Queens but no, I don’t call in to sports talk radio shows, even though that’s one hell of a stereotypical moniker, right? “We’ve got Al from Queens on the car phone.” Priceless.

Hope everyone enjoys my posts. And where you don’t, I hope you tell me so.

So how about this NL East, huh? Talk about the land of misfit toys. Outside of Philadelphia, does anyone really get excited when the Phillies clinch the division? Well, it happened again last night as the Phils blasted the Astros 10-3 at Citizens Bank Park. As a Met fan, this creases me, because once again it seems that if only the Phillies had some decent competition in this division, they wouldn’t be perceived as the mini-dynasty they’re otherwise shaping up to be. The Phils won it in 2007 with 89 wins. Then again last year with 92. Now they’ll probably end up with 93 or 94, which is a bit more respectable but hardly indicative of a powerhouse…especially when you factor in that they play the Nationals and Mets alone over 30 times a season.

Francisco Rodriguez

As for my Mets, they lost in mind-blowingly horrific fashion once again last night, falling to the Nats 7-4 with K-Rod giving up a bottom-of-the-ninth, pinch hit walk off grand slam to light-hitting September callup Justin Maxwell. At this point, I realize K-Rod is about as sick and tired of this season as the rest of us are in Metland, but is it too much to ask to at least permit Met fans to sniff what October might have been like by slamming the door on the lowly Nats? I mean, that was the whole point of K-Rod in the first place, right? With him out there instead of say, Luis Ayala, we’d have taken last year’s pennant. I think maybe even Ayala gets Maxwell last night, I really do. And that’s what it’s like to be Met fan these days, I guess. Never good enough no matter what we do or who’s in charge.

Leo Nunez

But speaking of mind-blowing, I was literally biting my nails over the 9th inning of Braves/Marlins last night willing Leo Nunez through my laptop to find the goddamned plate so that I could scrape out a save and salvage my fantasy season, when in a matter of seconds (refresh, browser! refresh!) the Marlins pulled him with the bases loaded, replaced him with Brendan Donnelly (does he still wear those funky glasses?), and then picked Matt Diaz off third to preserve the Marlins’ 5-4 win. Who gets the save? Did Donnelly even throw a pitch? Turns out he did…a wild one…almost chucking the game himself before Ronny Paulino threw a dart to Helms at third to nab Diaz and end the game. No save for Nunez. Interesting question though. If Donnelly threw over to 3rd instead of throwing a pitch, and Diaz was tagged out, does he get a save without throwing a pitch?

A question for another day. Perhaps tomorrow.

Cliff Lee made a good first impression

Cliff Lee made a good first impression

Cliff Lee (1-0) pitched a four-hitter, carrying a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and even adding two hits with the bat, and the Phillies felt an immediate impact two days after acquiring the left-hander from Cleveland, beating the San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Friday night. He dazzled from the start for the World Series champions, tossing his 11th career complete game, fourth this season and third in four starts. Lee’s line: one run, six strikeouts, two walks, 109 pitches and 78 strikes. He was done in 2 hours, 39 minutes. Lee doubled in the eighth for his first career extra-base hit and that gave him his first multihit game—and doubled his previous career hit total. Giants rookie Ryan Sadowski (2-4) lost his fourth straight start after beginning his career 2-0 with 16 scoreless innings. He was done after four innings and 82 pitches after feeling some tightness in his shoulder and arm. He hasn’t gone longer than five during his losing streak.

Three Florida relievers shut out the Chicago Cubs over the final 2 1-3 innings Friday night, while the Marlins scored three runs in the eighth against Carlos Marmol for a 5-2 victory. Brendan Donnelly (1-0), who has yet to allow a run in 10 innings with Florida, retired two batters in the eighth for his first NL victory. Leo Nunez pitched a hitless ninth for his ninth save in 12 chances. The relievers combined with starter Chris Volstad on a seven-hitter against the Cubs, who had scored 12 runs in each of the past two games. Florida’s relievers will get a reinforcement Saturday with the return of closer Matt Lindstrom, sidelined since June 23 by an elbow injury. The Marlins have won eight of their last 10 games to surge into wild-card contention, and they were buoyed by the addition of Washington first baseman Nick Johnson minutes before Friday’s trade deadline. He’s expected to be in the lineup Saturday. The score was 2-all when Marmol (2-2) came into the game in the eighth with a scoreless streak of 8 1-3 innings, but he walked the first two batters. Dan Uggla scored from second on Baker’s hit, and Helms doubled to hike his average as a pinch-hitter to .387.

Schmidt (2-1) walked five and struck out three in six innings, his longest start since going six innings for the Dodgers at San Diego on June 5, 2007. Six scoreless innings, his longest start in more than two years, lifted Schmidt’s spirits and Andre Ethier hit a homer and drove in four runs to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Atlanta Braves 5-0 on Friday night. Ethier hit a three-run homer in the fifth off Tommy Hanson (5-2) and added a run-scoring double in the ninth.“It’s the first time I’ve ever faced him that he’s not thrown me a changeup,” Jones said. “There’s just not that much difference between his changeup and his fastball right now. … But his curveball is much improved.” Hanson gave up eight hits and four runs in six innings to lose his second straight start.

Sean Green and the New York Mets were on their way to escaping a mess in the eighth inning Friday night when the reliever’s control failed him again. Arizona loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. Green (1-3) hit Upton with a pitch and walked Reynolds after Pedro Feliciano gave up a leadoff single to Gerardo Parra. The Mets looked as if they might escape after Daniel Murphy turned a nifty 3-2-3 double play but Green’s next pitch bounced away from catcher Omir Santos and Upton scampered home to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead. Esmerling Vasquez (2-2) pitched a scoreless seventh, Jon Rauch worked the eighth and Chad Qualls finished for his 19th save. David Wright and Daniel Murphy homered for New York, which has lost its last two after winning five straight. Livan Hernandez gave up two runs and four hits in six innings. Reynolds hit a 415-foot drive to center in the second for his 29th homer and Montero connected in the fourth, reaching the upper deck in right for his 10th of the season. Reynolds had two hits and is batting .396 (21 for 53) since the All-Star break. “We never put a lot of guys on base,” Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur said. “We never had the chance for a big inning. Doug Davis, he has us all off balance.”

Ross Ohlendorf (9-8) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings, Matt Capps earned his 21st save and Andrew McCutchen went 2 for 3 for the Pirates. Ryan Zimmerman homered and Cristian Guzman went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Nationals, who have lost three straight. The last-place teams met on a trade deadline day that included the first game for their respective watered-down rosters. In front of his rebuilt former team, Lastings Milledge made a good first impression on the new-look Pittsburgh Pirates. Milledge’s hits came in the third and seventh off Nationals starter John Lannan (7-8), but the left fielder misplayed Guzman’s sinking liner into an RBI double with Hanrahan on the mound in the eighth. Lannan entered the game having allowed a total of two runs in his past two starts but was charged with more than three earned runs in a game for only the third time in his past 20 outings. He allowed five runs and nine hits in seven innings. “I had it bad out there today, but I took some positives out of it,” Lannan said. “You knew that something was going to happen today. Nick’s a great ballplayer and Joe helps any staff. On deadline day, you know a lot of things are going to go down, so it really didn’t affect my mentality.”

Phillies Logo VS Marlins Logo
When we last left the Philadelphia Phillies(48-38, 1st in NL East) they were heading into a weekend series against the Pirates on quite a roll. That didn’t stop as they swept the Pirates, including a dramatic come from behind victory on Saturday night coming from five down in the ninth to win.  They are 9-1 now after allowing the Marlins to tie them for first and have extended their lead to four games in the division.  Five of their players did not get much of an All-Star BREAK as they were sent to participate in the game in St. Louis.  The Phillies hope to continue their roll and march toward a third division title in the second half.  Check out Phillies Phandom for more Philadelphia insight.Over at Fishguts, they provide this preview:

The Marlins (46-44, 2nd in NL East 4GB) sit four games back from first place and can make up some serious ground right away.  The Marlins have struggled thus far versus the Phillies going 2-4 on the season, with the Phillies getting a series sweep back in May at Philadelphia. The four game set will kick off at Land Shark Stadium and both teams will have a bit of a different look since last seeing each other. As of today the Phillies have added Pedro Martinez to the roster and then proceeded to place him on the disabled list with a mild shoulder strain. For the Marlins, they have added some bullpen depth calling up Luis Ayala from AAA, and signing veteran free agent Brendan Donnelly. If the Marlins plan on catching the Phillies atop the NL East they will need strong performances from the starting rotation.

Check out Fishguts for more Marlins news and information and a more in depth series preview..

The Mets(42-25, 4th in NL East 6.5GB) entered the All-Star break with two wins in a row and only their second series victory since the beginning of June.  They hope that they can build on that success and start becoming healthy in the second half.  They have looked dismal of late with bad defense, very little hitting and even the pitching has been sub-par.  There is still no news on most of their injuries, specifically to Beltran and Reyes.  They begin their four game set in Atlanta against their long time rivals in hopes of getting closer to the division or Wild Card lead.  Check out The Real Dirty Mets blog for more Mets information.
The Atlanta Braves(43-45, 3rd in NL East 6GB) went into the break after splitting a four game set in Colorado with two losses blamed on the bullpen.  The team can’t be too annoyed with the bullpen which seems to have the same suspects mentioned in post game write-ups day by day and you can only expect so many great outtings.  Virtually all of their team, including all pitchers got the past three days off, so they are fresh and ready to battle.  They will welcome in recently traded Jeff Francouer this weekend with his new mates for a four game set.  Check out The Braves Baseball blog for more insight.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Thursday @ 7:00PM EST – Perez,NYM(2-2,8.78 ERA) vs. Lowe,ATL(8-7,4.39 ERA)
Friday @ 7:35PM EST – Pelfrey,NYM(7-4,4.47 ERA) vs. Jurrjens,ATL(7-7,2.91 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:00PM EST – Santana,NYM(10-7,3.09 ERA) vs. Kawakami,ATL(5-6,4.26 ERA)
Sunday @ 6:00PM EST – Nieve,NYM(3-3,3.03 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(6-7,2.95 ERA)

The Washington Nationals(26-61, 5th in NL East 22.5GB) have had probably the busiest All-Star week a team can have when you only send one player to the game.  On Sunday after the game, they made multiple player moves while trying to get some fresh blood on the team.  Later that night, they made a big move, while expected and fired Manny Acta as team manager, with Jim Riggleman replacing him on an interim basis.  They will welcome in the Chicago Cubs to Nats park this weekend and hope that the infusion of new blood will change this team.  They have a huge uphill climb if they hope to do anything this season, but more likely are hoping to plan and find some gems for next year.  Check out CenterfieldGate for more news, information and insight on the Nats.

The Chicago Cubs(43-43, third in NL Central 3.5GB) split four games with the Cardinals this weekend and have climbed back to the .500 mark for the season at the break.  Many people’s off season pick to win the NL Central, the Cubs have been underwhelming this year and hope a fresh start only 3.5 games back in the second half will propel them.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Thursday @ 7:05PM EST-Harden,CHI(5-6,5.47 ERA) vs. Lannan,WAS(6-6,3.70 ERA)
Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Zambrano,CHI(5-4,3.53 ERA) vs. Olsen,WAS(2-4,6.03 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Lilly,CHI(9-6,3.18 ERA) vs. Zimmermann,WAS(3-4,4.50 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – TBA,CHI vs. Mock,WAS(0-2,6.92 ERA)
