Phillies vs. Dodgers

The Phillies beat the Dodgers Wednesday afternoon 5-1, and won their series against Los Angeles. Home runs by Jimmy Rollins in the 1st inning and Shane Victorino in the 2nd gave Philadelphia an early 2-0 lead. The Phillies tagged on another run in the 7th on a double by Chase Utley. An RBI single by Rollins followed by a ground-rule double off the bat of Utley added two runs for Philadelphia in the 9th. Utley had a career-high three doubles in the game. The Dodgers did not get their first hit until the 6th inning off Roy Oswalt. Their only run of the game came in the bottom of the 8th when James Loney singled for L.A. to drive home Jamey Carroll.

Oswalt got the win for Philadelphia, going 6.1 innings and giving up no runs on one hit while striking out six. Clayton Kershaw took the loss for L.A., going 6 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out eleven.

Braves vs. Mets

The Braves dealt the Mets their third straight loss, winning 4-1. Atlanta scored in the 1st inning on a two-run double by Martin Prado. Rick Ankiel scored in the 2nd inning on a single by Omar Infante. Infante would later score Atlanta’s 4th run when Jason Heyward doubled to left field. The Mets lone run of the game came in the 8th. Ike Davis scored on a single by Luis Hernandez.

Tommy Hanson got the win, his first since July 3. Hanson threw 7 innings of one-hit ball. He gave up no runs while striking out three. Mike Pelfrey took the loss, going 5 innings and giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out two. Billy Wagner recorded his 31st save of the season for Atlanta.

Marlins vs. Nationals

It was a wild one down in Florida as the Marlins beat the Nationals 16-10. The Nationals got on the board first with a 1st inning run on a single by Michael Morse. Florida responded with 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st, followed by 5 more in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd. In the top of the 6th, Marlins starter Chris Volstad threw a pitch behind Morgan, who in response, charged the mound and began a bench-clearing brawl. The incident stems from a play Tuesday night in which Morgan barreled into Marlins catcher Brett Hayes at home plate. Hayes suffered a separated left shoulder. Morgan and Volstad, along with Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez and reliever Jose Veras were ejected. When all was said and done, Washington went on to score three runs in the inning. A solo shot by Wil Nieves in the 7th followed by an RBI single by Willie Harris made it 15-10. Suddenly Washington found themselves back in the ballgame, but Florida tagged on their final run in the bottom of the 7th on a home run off the bat of Cameron Maybin, and was able to hang on.

Before being tossed from the game, Volstad went 5 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits while striking out four to get the win. Scott Olsen took the loss, lasting only 1.2 innings and giving up nine runs on eight hits while striking out only one batter.

Braves vs. Cubs

Derrek Lee went hitless in his Braves debut against his former team, but Atlanta mounted another late-inning rally and defeated the Cubs 5-3 in Chicago.

 

Cubs’ starter Ryan Dempster allowed just two runs and four hits over eight innings.  Chicago handed the ball to closer Carlos Marmol in the ninth to try to protect a 3-2 lead.  Marmol (2-3) walked the bases loaded, and then allowed a bases-clearing triple to Braves outfielder Rick Ankiel to give the Braves a 5-3 lead.  Billy Wagner allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, but retired the next three batters to earn save number 30.  Atlanta reliever Peter Moylan (5-2) pitched a perfect eighth inning to earn the victory.

 

 

Nationals vs. Phillies

The Phillies scored an early run, and ace Roy Halladay made sure it held up as the Phils defeated the Nationals 1-0 in Philadelphia.

 

The game’s lone run came in the third inning when Raul Ibanez doubled home Chase Utley off of Nats’ starter Jason Marquis (0-6).   Halladay (16-8) allowed eight hits and three walks over seven innings, but didn’t allow a run to score.  The Nationals finished the game with 10 hits, but stranded 12 baserunners in the shutout.  Phils’ closer Brad Lidge came on in the ninth and earned his 17th save.

 

 

Mets vs Pirates

The Mets offense finally woke up in Pittsburgh, and Mike Pelfrey pitched eight solid innings in New York’s 7-2 victory over the Pirates.

 

The Mets scored three runs in the top of the first off of Pirates’ starter Jeff Karstens (2-10), and added two more runs in the third and fourth innings.   Jose Reyes and David Wright paced the offense with three hits apiece, and Chris Carter added a home run and two RBI for the Mets.  Pelfrey (12-7) allowed just two runs (one earned) and five hits in his eight innings, striking out five.

 

 

Marlins vs. Astros

Anibel Sanchez was dominant, and Florida’s offense exploded late in the Marlins’ 9-0 victory over the Houston Astros in Miami.

 

Houston starter J.A. Happ (3-2) allowed a run in the first inning, and then held the Marlins scoreless until the sixth inning when Dan Uggla hit a two-run single.  Sanchez helped his own cause with a run-scoring single in the seventh, and the Marlins added three more runs in the inning to build a 7-0 lead.  Cody Ross and Hector Luna hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning for Florida to cap the scoring.   Sanchez (10-8) allowed just three hits over seven shutout innings, and the Florida bullpen pitched two perfect innings to close out the victory.

Mets vs. Twins

The Mets started off their series with the Twins with a win, as they beat Minnesota 5-2. The Twins got things going with a lead-off home run by Denard Span in the 1st. Span knocked in the Twins second run in the 5th on a ground out to second base. The Mets scored three runs in the 3rd inning on doubles by David Wright and Jason Bay, and a single by Ike Davis. The Mets scored another run in the 5th on a sacrifice fly by Jose Reyes and again the 6th on a Wright home run.

Mike Pelfrey got the win, his 10th of the year. Pelfrey went 6 innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Minnesota’s Kevin Slowey took the loss. He lasted 6 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Francisco Rodriguez recorded his 17th save.

Braves vs. Tigers

The Braves ended their three-game losing streak and reached a few milestones as they beat the Tigers 3-1. Detroit scored their one and only run of the night in the 1st inning on an RBI single by Brennan Boesch. Atlanta tied it up in the 2nd on a single by Melky Cabrera. Brian McCann hit a home run in the 4th inning, his 9th of the year and the 100th of his career, to make it 2-1 Braves. The Braves scored again in the 8th with a home run by Brooks Conrad.

Kris Medlen got the win, pitching 6.2 innings and giving up one run on six hits. Andrew Oliver, making his Major League debut, took the loss. He went six innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Billy Wagner came in to the 9th to get the save, his 400th career save.

Marlins vs. Padres

The Marlins fell to the Padres 3-0. Florida’s bats were quiet for much of the night. The Marlins left nine men on base and only had one hit with runners in scoring position. The Padres didn’t do much at the plate either until the 7th when they scored one run on a single by Oscar Salazar and two more on a home run by Will Venable.

Chris Volstad took the loss, throwing 6 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. Clayton Richard got the win, going 6 innings and allowing no runs on five hits. Heath Bell recorded his 20th save of the season for San Diego.

Phillies vs. Blue Jays

The Phillies crushed the Blue Jays winning 9-0. The Blue Jays batters couldn’t hit much off Roy Halladay.  Lyle Overbay did go 2-2 for Toronto. The Phillies scored in the 2nd inning on a single by Ross Gload, and again in the 4th on an RBI ground out by Shane Victorino. The Phillies big inning came in the 6th when they scored six runs on singles by Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, and a double by Gload.  Victorino homered in the 8th to make it 9-0.

Halladay got the win, tossing seven innings and giving up no runs on six hits. Jesse Litsch took the loss, going only 4 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits.

Nationals vs. Orioles

Sloppy defense cost the Nationals a win as they fell to the Orioles 7-6. Adam Dunn got Washington on the board in the 1st and 3rd innings with a  ground out and sacrifice fly. Ivan Rodriguez singled in a run in the 3rd also to make it 3-0 Nationals. Washington would score three more runs in the 4th on a doubles by Nyjer Morgan and Dunn. Baltimore broke through in the 5th to score three runs on a sac fly by Miguel Tejada and singles by Nick Markakis and Adam Jones, cutting the Nationals lead to 6-3. The Orioles tied it up in the 8th on a two run homer by Scott Moore and a Corey Patterson single. Baltimore went on to score the winning run in the bottom of the 9th on a throwing error by Christian Guzman.

J.D. Martin lasted only 4.1 innings and got a no decision. He gave up three runs on six hits. Tyler Clippard took the loss for the Nationals. Jake Arrieta also went 4.1 innings taking a no decision. He allowed six runs on eight hits. Alfredo Simon got the win for Baltimore.

Phillies vs. Indians

The Phillies scored 5 runs in the 2nd thanks to some hits by Shane Victorino, Placido Polanco, and Chase Utley.  The Indians scored 2 runs in the 5th thanks to a 2 run homer by Jason Donald.  The Phillies scored 2 more in the bottom now leading 7-2.   In the 6th the Phillies tacked on 5 more runds thanks to a Dane Sardinha homer,  Placido Polanco double, Jason Werth sac fly, and a Wilson Valdez single.  The Indians scored again in the 8th when Trevor Crown doubled home Jason Donald.  With 2 outs the game went into a rain delay with Carlos Santana at the plate.

Joe Blanton got the win after he  pitched 7.2 innings giving up 6 hits, 3 runs, with 8 strikeouts.  Fausto Carmona got the lose and pitched just 4 innings give up 9 hits and 7 runs and no strikeouts.

Marlins vs. Orioles

The Orioles beat the Marlins in a score of 11-5. The Marlins struck fist scoring 2 runs in the 1st with singles from both Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla.  They added another run in the 2nd when Gaby Sanchez doubled home Ronnie Paulino.  The Orioles scored 5 runs in the 3rd thanks to to hits from Julio Lugo, Miguel Tejada, Ty Wigginton, Luke Scott, and Adam Jones.  The Marlins scored in the 5th when Dan Uggla singled home Gaby Sanchez.  Adam Jones added another run for the Orioles when he hit a solo shot in the bottom of the inning.  The Orioles added another run in the 6th when Luke Scott doubled home Miguel Tejada, the scored 3 more runs in the 7th when Miguel Tejada hit a 3 run bomb, and another in the 8th when Craig Tatum doubled home Adam Jones.  The Marlins added another run in the 9th when Dan Uggla singled home Gaby Sanchez.

Kevin Millwood got the win and pitched 5 innings giving up 8 hits, 4 runs, with 3 strikeouts.  Nate Robertson took the lose after only lasting 2.1 innings giving up 7 hits, 5 runs, with 2 strikeouts.

Braves vs. White Sox

The Braves lost to the White Sox in a score of 2-0.  The only runs of the game came in the 8th when Paul Konerko homered scoring Juan Pierre.

Derek Lowe started for the Braves pitching 7 innings giving up 5 hits, no runs, with 4 strikeouts.  Takashi Saito got the lose pitching 1 inning giving up 2 hits and 2 runs.  Gavin Floyd started for the White sox pitching 7 innings  giving up 2 hits, no runs, with 9 strike outs.  JJ Putz got the win pitching just 1 inning.  Bobby Jenks got his 17th save of the season and 1 strike out.

Mets vs. Tigers

The Mets lose to the Tigers in a score of 5-6. The Tigers scored in the 1st when Miguel Cabrera hit a sac fly to score Austin Jackson.  The Tigers added 2 more runs in the 3rd when Magglio Ordonez hit a 2 run shot.  The Jesus Feliciano scored for the Mets in the 4th on an Ike Davis ground out.  In the 5th Ryan Raburn hit a solo shot, with the bases loaded Brandon Inge walked scoring Magglio Ordonez, and  Danny Worth grounded out to score Miguel Cabrera.  The Mets added 3 runs in the 6th from hits by David Wright, Ike Davis, and Jason Bay.  Chris Carter singled home Ruben Tejada to get the Mets another run in the 7th.

Armando Galarraga got the win pitching 6 innings giving up 5 hits, 4 runs, with 1 strikeout.  Hisanori Takahashi took the lose after he pitched 4 innings giving up 8 hits, 6 runs, with 4 strikeouts.  Jose Valverde got his 17th save of the season including 1 strikeout.

The Nationals were off today

Phillies vs. Twins

The Phillies beat the Twins by a score of 9-5. The Phillies scored early and often, getting three runs in the 1st and five runs in the 2nd. Philadelphia had back-to-back home runs by Chase Utley and Ryan Howard in the 2nd to make it 8-0. Howard had two home runs on the night along with a triple. The Twins got on the board in the 6th with an RBI single by Michael Cuddyer, and again in the 7th on a Nick Pinto home run. The Twins fought back to score two more in the 9th on a wild pitch and an RBI ground out by Orlando Hudson.

Joe Blanton got the win for the Phillies, going 6 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits. Nick Blackburn took the loss, lasting only 1.2 innings, allowing eight runs on six hits.

Nationals vs. White Sox

The Nationals lost to the White Sox in extra innings 2-1. The White Sox jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, but then the game was all pitching. Washington tied it up in the 7th with an RBI double by Adam Dunn. The game remained tied until the 11th when a single by Alex Rios scored Mark  Kotsay for the go ahead run.

Stephen Strasburg, who had a no decision, pitched 7 innings allowing one run on four hits and struck out ten. Drew Storen took the loss for the Nationals. Gavin Floyd also had a no decision, going 8 innings and giving up one run on four hits. J.J. Putz got the win. Bobby Jenks recorded his 14th save for Chicago.

Marlins vs. Rays

The Marlins snapped a three-game losing streak, beating the Rays 7-4. The Rays jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st on an RBI double by Ben Zobrist. The Marlins responded in the bottom of the inning. After Chris Coghlan scored to make it 2-1, rookie Mike Stanton hit his first Major League home run — a grand slam — to give the Marlins a 5-2 lead. Florida would go on to score two more in the 2nd on singles by Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla. Tampa Bay scored one run in the 4th on an error by Ramirez, and again in the 7th on a single by B.J. Upton.

Nate Robertson got the win, going 6 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Matt Garza got the loss, throwing only 1.1 innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits. Leo Nunez got his 14th save for the Marlins.

Braves vs. Royals

The Braves held onto first place in the NL East with their 6-4 win over the Royals. Atlanta struck first, scoring two runs in the 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Derek Lowe and later in the inning on a wild pitch. Kansas City would tie it up with an RBI single by Jason Kendall in the 3rd and a home run by Billy Butler in the 4th. The Braves scored three more in the 4th with a double by Melky Cabrera and singles by Lowe and Chipper Jones. The Royals scored again in the 7th and 8th on singles by Wilson Betemit and Jose Guillen.

Derek Lowe got the win going 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Brian Bannister took the loss, lasting only 4 innings and giving up five runs on seven hits. Billy Wagner got his 13th save for Atlanta.

Mets vs. Yankees

The Mets won their eighth straight, beating the Yankees 4-0. The Mets scored in the 1st on an RBI single by Ike Davis. They got two more runs in the eighth when a double by Angel Pagan scored Ruben Tejada and Jose Reyes. Reyes drove in a run in the 9th to make it 4-0. Nick Swisher went 2-5 and Francisco Cervelli went 2-4 for the Yankees.

Hisanori Takahashi pitched 6 strong innings to get the win, giving up no runs on four hits. Javier Vazquez took the loss, throwing 7 innings and allowing one run on three hits. Francisco Rodriguez recorded his 16th save.

No more baseball. Thank goodness for football, because I think I’d go out the window if I had only hockey and basketball for sustenance once the world series is over. Defenestration. I think that’s what it’s called. I must not be alone in thinking that either. Going out the window, that is. Imagine it happened quite frequently at some point. Enough to motivate someone to actually come up with a word for it. Think about that. We do lots of things every day that there isn’t a word for but should be. Throwing a pillow at the TV after Jerry Manuel starts Wilson Valdez at short, for example. Gotta be a word for that.

Anyway, the Phillies won yesterday—outlasting the Marlins 7-6 at Citizens Bank Park and avoiding a series sweep to end the season. I guess the secret to beating the Marlins turned out to be sitting all your regulars, because that’s what the Phillies did yesterday as Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Raul Ibanez all rode the pine. Josh Johnson must have been licking his chops as he warmed up to start this one, huh? Turns out, not so much.  John Mayberry, Paul Hoover and Miguel Cairo combined to blast the Marlins, who finish the year at 87-75–6 games out of first and 5 back of the wildcard.

Washington fans have to be feeling pretty satisfied with themselves this week, huh? After laying a 3 game sweep on the Mets, they go into Atlanta and sweep the Braves out of town too to finish the season on a 7 game winning streak. Still couldn’t break 60 wins, however, as the Nats finish up the season 59-103. That’s 2 years in a row at 59 wins. Whatever word there is to describe what the Nationals are, “good” is not one of them. Let’s hope Stephen Strasburg gets here quickly, huh? The game ball in this one had to go to J.D. Martin, who matched Derek Lowe down the line and shut down the Braves over 6 innings, scattering 6 hits and allowing a single run in a game that the Nats went on to win in extras 2-1.

Finally, the Mets. I actually can’t write any more about them. It hurts too much. Watching Nelson Figueroa out there yesterday though pitching his complete game shutout only made it harder to endure these next months without baseball. The playoffs and World Series will be fun, don’t get me wrong. And my Giants will make it bearable until January or so, but thinking about what could have been this year in Queens just brings me down. Maybe the Mets would have choked again this year, and you know what, I’d have preferred it to the dead from the neck up baseball I witnessed this year from basically mid-May. Sweeping the Astros to finish out the string here was nice, but watching the Phillies and Dodgers stumble to the finish this year got me thinking about how the Mets likely would have made it close.

Hamels is thinking about Playoffs

The Houston Astros continued to have the Phillies number last night in Philly, beating Hamels and the Phils 8-2.  Miguel Tejada went 4-5 with three runs and an RBI, CarlosLee added tow hits, two runs and an RBI and even former Met Jeff Keppinger got into things going 3-5 with two RBI on the day.  Yorman Bazardo(1-2) got his first win by lasting 5.2 innings and only allowed two hits and two runs to the heavy hitting Phillies.

Cole Hamels(10-10) dropped back to .500 on the season with a 6.2 inning stinker, allowing nine hits and six runs in this game.  The offense obviously didn’t help wither as Shane Victorino was the only Philly with two hits and only Chase Utley recorded the only RBI for them.  Phillies Phandom will have more on the Phillies and their struggles against the Astros.

Jurrjens with another gem

Jair Jurrjens is keeping the playoff hopes of the Braves alive, with a gem last night in a 4-0 win against the Fish.  Jurrjens(14-10) went seven innings and allowed just five hits and a walk with no runs, his season ERA is now 2.61, impressive.  The Braves only had three hits, but had ELEVEN walks to put up their four runs.  The RBI’s were credited to Nate McLouth, Chipper Jones, Brian McCann and Garrett Anderson.  The Braves Baseball Blog covers the Braves.

ELEVEN walks, that is absolutely insane and you can not expect to win with that.  Anibal Sanchez(3-8) went five innings and his line was two hits, three runs and EIGHT walks in the game.  No one in the offense had more than two hits, those went to John Baker and Chris Coghlan as the Marlins flounder down the stretch, check out FishGuts for more.

Is he doing the robot?

Ah, the matchup of the week, the last place Nats against the should be last place Mets, the Nats took the first game, 2-1.  Ross Detwiler(1-6) got his first major league win as he went six innings and allowed just seven hits and one run in the game, congrats.  Ryan Zimmerman got the Nats on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly and Mike Morse had a solo shot in the sixth that proved to be the game winning run.  Mike MacDougal got his 17th save of the season with a perfect ninth as well.  Centerfield Gate has more on the Nationals and many things baseball.

Nelson Figueroa pitched well enough to win yet again, but he does play on the 2009 Mets, so that didn’t happen.  Figueroa(2-8) got the loss in six innings allowing six hits and two runs, basically just on that home run in this one.  Fernando Tatis had the only RBI with a single to Center field in the sixth scoring Carlos Beltran, temporarily tying the game.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog covers this and many other issues the Mets face entering the offseason.

Lidge gets anothe shaky save

The Philadelphia Phillies took the final game of the three game set, 4-2 yesterday in Atlanta even during a rain delay.  Ben Francisco started the scoring with an RBI double and Raul Ibanez, Pedro Feliz and Chase Utley added solo RBI’s  for them.  Cliff Lee had started the game but onlt went four because of a long rain delay and Tyler Walker(2-0) got the win going two innings while allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out three.  Brad Lidge got his 31st save of the year but his ERA continues to rise as he gave up a walk, a run and one hit.  Phillies Phandom will have more on this game.

Tommy Hanson(10-4) took a rare loss for the Bravos in this one and the Braves had five innings against relief pitching to get him off the hook.  Hanson went five innings allowing seven hits and four runs and also walking four in this one.  Matt Diaz and Brian McCann got the only RBI’s for the Braves in this one as they fail to gain ground in the division or wildcard.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

Corky Miller? 3 run homer

The Cincinnati Reds beat up on the Florida Marlins yesterday in Cincy on the back of a couple big home runs.  Catcher Corky Miller hit a three run shot in the fourth and Joey Votto hit a two run shot in the seventh on way to an 8-1 route.  Kip Wells(2-4) went seven innings and allowed just five hits and one run to get the victory in this game.

Sean West is having a rough rookie campaign.  West(7-6) went 4.1 innings and allowed five hits and five runs while walking three and his ERA now stands at 4.85 for the season.  The only run the Marlins mustered was in the eigth on a Brett Carroll single scoring John Baker, check out FishGuts for more Marlins news.

Maine gets the W

In this weekend’s battle of the basement, the Mets came out ahead after taking two of three games with Sunday’s 6-2 victory over the Nats.  John Maine(6-5) went five effective innings allowing just three baserunners on two hits and one walk and no runs.  Daniel Murphy added a two RBI double and Wilson Valdez of all people had a two RBI triple later in the game to put it away.  Franky Rodriguez got save number 33 by getting the final out of the game via strikeout.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog has all the Mets info you want.

Garrett Mock didn’t pitch terribly in this one, but the Nats offense could not support him.  Mock(3-9) went seven innings allowing nine hits and four runs throwing 115 pitches and taking the tough loss.  Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn both had an RBI in a small ninth inning rally before K-Rod ended the threat.  Check out Centerfield Gate for a more in depth recap and all other Nationals news.

Lee with a CG

Cliff Lee rebounded from a few bad outtings with a stellar game on Tuesday night.  Cliff Lee(7-2) pitched a complete game shutout giving up only six hits and walking three while striking out nine batters on 124 pitches.  He was given all five runs of offense in the first and second on a Chase Utley RBI single, a Carlos Ruiz two RBI double and a Jimmy Rollins RBI single during the 5-0 win.  Check out Phillies Phandom for more info on this game and the Phillies continued march to the playoffs.

Garrett Mock managed to get through six innings to save the bullpen a bit, but pitched poorly, especially early.  Mock(3-8) went six innings allowing seven hits and five runs and his season ERA is now 5.89.  The Nats offense was sleeping and only Jason Maxwell had more than one hit in this game, Centerfield Gate has more.

Uggla with the big blow

Neither team ran away with this one in St. Louis, but courtesy of Dan Uggla, the Marlins came away with a 2-1 win over the Cardinals.  In the sixth inning, while down 1-0, Dan Uggla hit a two run shot off starter Adam Wainwright and the Marlins bullpen closed the door to win this game 2-1.  Sean West(7-5) went six strong innings allowing six hits and just one run and nine k’s in this one and Leo Nunez got his 21st save on a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.  Check out FishGuts for more on the Marlins.

Albert Pujols hit a sacrifice fly in teh fifth scoring Rick Ankiel and that would be all the scoring the Cardinals got in this one, giving no run support to Wainwright.  Wainwright(18-8) went seven innings allowing seven hits and two runs and eight strike outs with his main blemish being a home run.

LaRoche with two long balls

Adam LaRoche had a huge day against the Mets last night during the Braves run away 6-0 victory.  LaRoche went 4-4 with four runs scored and three RBI, two of those RBI on home runs in leading the way.  Rookie Tommy Hanson(10-3) got his tenth victory of the year in a stellar seven inning three hit and eight strikeout performance for the win.  The Braves have now won five in a row to keep their small playoff hopes alive, check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

What can you say about the Mets?  No much!  Pat Misch(1-3) went five tough innings allowing eight hits and four runs in taking the loss and the bullpen wasn’t much better behind him.  The Mets recorded only four total hits on the night, with two coming from Daniel Murphy but obviously no runs scored, The Real Dirty Mets Blog covers them.

Lidge barely gets a save

Game 1

In the first game of a double dip yesterday, Kyle Kendrick made a spot start for the Phillies and looked great.  Kendrick(1-1) went 7.1 innings and only allowed seven hits and two earned runs, both on an Anderson Hernandez two run shot in the eighth.  He was supported by a Ben Francisco homer and a Shane Victorino two run homer early.  The hit that mattered though was an Andy Tracy RBI single in the bottom of the eighth giving insurance runs.  Brad Lidge narrowly got his 29th save of the season working the ninth and allowing three hits and two runs before getting the final out to end it.

The Mets sent John Maine to the mound after a long absence and although he could only pitch through the third because of a pitch count, he did well.  Maine(5-5) took the loss even though he only gave up two hits and a run on 57 pitches.  The Mets relief gave up a combined eight hits and four runs in the final five innings and did not help the Mets comeback.  Anderson Hernandez had the two run shot to bring them closer and in the ninth Josh Thole singled home Francouer and then came in himself on a Jeremy Reed single, but they could not get closer.

Pedro shuts down his former mates

Game 2:

Pedro Martinez is now 2-0 versus his former team and he absolutely shut them down last night in the nightcap.  Martinez(5-0) went eight innings allowing six hits and striking out seven while throwing 130 pitches! The only run was scored on an RBI single by Chase Utley, scoring Jimmy Rollins in the first inning.  Ryan Madson got his eighth save of the year but did allow one batter to get on base for the shaky bullpen.

Tim Redding pitched very well and well enough to win, but again, no offense behind him.  Tim Redding(2-6) went six innings and allowed three hit sand only the run in the first inning in taking a real tough luck loss.  Only Brian Schneider and Anderson Hernandez had multiple hits for the Mets as they will regroup and hope to win a few in Atlanta this week.

Umm..wow

The Florida Marlins ended a deflating and disappointing weekend with a 7-2 loss at the hands of the last place Nationals.  Nats ace John Lannan(9-11) went the minimum only allowing one run on six hits to get his 9th win of the year and let his offense do the rest.    Elijah Dukes and Pete Orr added two RBI a piece and rookie Ian Desmond continued to play well going 2-5 for the Nats in this one.  Centerfield Gate will have more on this game and the series and all the Nats news you need.

Chris Volstad was back from the minors to make a start and it did not go well for him.  Volstad(9-12) went only three innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs (five total) and allowed five walks and a home run on the day.  Unfortunately the offense couldn’t do much to get back in the game in this one.  Jorge Cantu and Cody Ross had the only RBI for the Marlins on this day and Hanley Ramirez added three hits, but this was a disappointing weekend for the Fish.  FishGuts has more on this.

Carpenter with a rare bad one

Javier Vazquez continues to be solid for the Braves, as he led them to a series sweep over the Central leading Cardinals yesterday 9-2.  Vazquez(9-2) went a complete game allowing seven hits and two runs and eight strikeouts to get the victory here.  Nate McClouth had four hits and Adam LaRoche had two hits and three RBI to lead the Braves to the sweep.  The Braves Baseball Blog has more on the Bravos.

Chris Carpenter does not have many starts like this, but unfortunately he laid an egg on Sunday.  Carpenter(16-4) managed through six taxing innings but gave up nine hits and seven runs and the offense was stagnant for him as well.  Matt Holliday had the only two RBI for the Cardinals in this one and Skip Schumaker had three hits, but the Cardinals will look to rebound from this tough weekend this week.
