Cliff Lee makes it 5-0

Cliff Lee makes it 5-0

Yesterday, fresh off a stunning triple play ender to a ball game, Cliff Lee looked to make it three of four against the deteriorated Mets.  Lee(5-0) went seven innings allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out five and both runs allowed were in the first inning.  He got plenty of support from big man Ryan Howard as well.  Howard homered twice in the first three innings of the game, first with a three run shot, and later with a two run blow.  Raul Ibanez produced the only other run on a RBI double, which scored Chase Utley.  Phillies Phandom will have more info on the Phils.

The Mets learned of another injury prior to yesterday’s game and were forced to play with Jeff Francouer, and possibly won’t have him for some time.  With Bobby Parnell on the mound and a team full of backups, Parnell could not come through.  Parnell(3-6) gave up four hits and five runs in five innnings worked, but if you take away the bombs to Howard, did not do that bad, but still gets collared with the loss.  The Mets first run was scored on a wild play in the first where Chase Utley dropped a popup allowing Angel Pagan to score and then a throwing error to second, allowed him to score.  Later in the inning, Fernando Tatis hit a sac fly to score Sheffield, but the Mets could get nothing more against Cliff Lee.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog has more on this game and Johan Santana’s injury.

Balester gets roughed up in the 6th

Balester gets roughed up in the 6th

For a while, Yovani Gallardo probably wondered what he would have to do to get another win, as his team was down 1-0 until the sixth.  In the sixth inning, Ryan Braun got them ahead with a two run homer and was helped by RBI singles from Jason Kendall and Jody Gerut and finally an RBI groundout by Felipe Lopez.  Jody Gerut also added a solo shot in the eighth for insurance.  Gallardo(12-10) held on and gave up only one run and four hits in five innings but walked four against eight strike outs to throw 108 pitches.

The Nationals for a while looked like they may take a pitchers dual and split the four game set.  Unfortunately Colin Balester could not hold the lead in the sixth.  Balester(1-4) finished the day with five complete innings and five hits and four runs, including the shot to Ryan Braun.  The only run for the Nationals came from Will Nieves RBI groundout.  CenterfieldGate has more on the Nats latest struggles.

Phillies Logo VS Mets Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(69-49, 1st in NL East) are coming into this Mets series playing some of their best baseball of the year.  The problem is, they don’t need their best baseball this time, as the Mets are completely depleted.  The Phillies have won eight of nine games since being swept by the Marlins two weekends ago and find themselves with their lead in the division back to 6.5 games.  Can the Phillies get as fired up to play the Mets as they always can, even though they are so far apart? Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The New York Mets(56-65, 4th in NL East 14.5GB) just want to get through the year without more controversy and injury.  This week alone, they lost another player to injury (Wright), released Livan Hernandez, activated Billy Wagner, but had a blow up from Sheffield.  At the least this gives people things to write and talk about in an otherwise dismal year for the Mets.  Can they play a bit of a spoiler this weekend?  The Real Dirty Mets Blog will have more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-7,4.69 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-8,4.75 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Happ,PHI(9-2,2.66 ERA) vs. Redding,NYM(1-4,6.53 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Martinez,PHI(1-0,4.50 ERA) vs. Perez,NYM(3-3,6.06 ERA)
Monday @ 1:10PM EST – Lee,PHI(11-9,2.72 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(3-5,4.74 ERA)
Marlins Logo VS Braves Logo
The Florida Marlins(64-57, 2nd in NL East 6.5GB, 4GB of wildcard) could not take care of business this week against a weak opponent and therefore lost ground in both races.  The Astros were able to take two of three games from the Marlins in Houston, and both the Phillies and Colorado Rockies swept their sets to push them into a tie with the Braves in both races at 6.5 games back.  They need to rebound and get some help from other teams this weekend. FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Atlanta Braves(64-57, 2nd in NL East 6.5GB, 4GB of wildcard) did exactly what they had to this week in New York and won the series.  It did not look good as they blew a four run lead in the first game but rebounded very well in game two and even beating Johan Santana in the third game.  They continue a division rival week as they welcome in the Marlins who they are tied with currently to see who comes out ahead after the series.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Sanchez,FLA(1-4,5.55 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-8,2.99 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:00PM EST – Volstad,FLA(9-9,4.61 ERA) vs. Hanson,ATL(8-2,3.05 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:30PM EST – Nolasco,FLA(9-8,5.22 ERA) vs. Lowe,ATL(12-8,4.45 ERA)
Brewers Logo VS Nationals Logo
The Washington Nationals(43-78, 5th in NL East 27.5GB) came out of a solid weekend where they rebounded from a three game losing streak to win the final three of a four game set in Cincinnati.  They then welcomed in the Wild card leading Rockies and lost all three to them to get back into a losing streak.  They will be the only National League East team not playing a division rival this weekend as they welcome in the Brew-Crew.  They hope to rebound again as they did last weekend, check out CenterfieldGate for more.

The Milwaukee Brewers(58-62, 4th in NL Central 10.5GB) are now completely floundering, losers of seven of their past ten games and falling to fourth as the Cardinals surge to the division lead.  They will hope to rebound and see if they can get any help from other teams this weekend, but likely spoiler is their best role throughout the season.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Looper,MIL(10-6,5.03 ERA) vs. Martin,WAS(2-2,4.61 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Burns,MIL(3-4,5.36 ERA) vs. Lannan,WAS(8-9,3.68 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – Parra,MIL(8-9,6.33 ERA) vs. Stammen,WAS(3-6,5.13 ERA)
Monday @ 4:35PM EST – Gallardo(11-10,3.56 ERA) vs. Balester,WAS(1-3,6.75 ERA)

Welcome to Chatter Up! This week features Matt Smith of Phillies Phandom against DirtySanchez of  The Real Dirty Mets Blog.  When this idea was first created by NLEC, we thought this would be a much more exciting matchup, but that is why they play the games right?  Lets get to it!
DirtySanchez(TRDMB) & Mark(CFG): Jamie Moyer clearly believes that his relegation to the bullpen is unfair. Will his attitude stand in the way of his ability to provide the Phils with the necessary late innings relief they need?
Matt S(PP): I guess you missed Tuesday’s game. Jamie came in after the rain delay and pitched six shutout innings. I’d say that’s pretty effective :-) . It’s no secret that he is upset about the demotion, but he’s a professional. He’s 46-years-old. He’s been through it all during his major league career. Right now, Moyer is the team’s long man out of the bullpen. While everyone has been happy with Pedro (the guy is an absolute blast in the clubhouse — he meshes right in with this close-knit group. Not to mention, he’s pitched pretty well), if he completely falters in his next 3-4 start, he could be moved to the bullpen before the end of the regular season. But, at this point, the idea is for Pedro to continue being the No. 5 starter and, come playoff time, a reliable, experienced arm out of the pen.
DirtySanchez(TRDMB):Has the league caught up with Lidge and that’s what has caused his 8 bs or is he pitching through injury?
Matt S(PP):I think you’re right — the league has caught up to him a bit. From what I understand, hitters aren’t chasing the slider as often as last year. But the worst thing about Lidge this season has been his total lack of command of his fastball. He has no idea where it’s going, and typically, he leaves it in spots where guys can put a good swing on the ball. The team and Lidge have said a thousand times since he returned from the disabled list that he is not injured. In fact, pitching coach Rich Dubee has been on record as saying that his stuff is BETTER than what it was last season. Actually, Lidge has also said that he feels better than ever and he feels as though his stuff is better, too. Obviously, it hasn’t shown in the results.
DirtySanchez(TRDMB) & Mark P(CFG): For Phillies: What’s wrong with Cole Hamels? He’s struggling. Can he return to form?
Matt S(PP): I’ve answered this question a few times… but it’s cool! Cole Hamels just hasn’t been able to get going this year. Last year’s playoff run took a huge physical toll on him. Remember, he hadn’t thrown 200-plus innings at any level in his career (including high school) before last year, when he threw 240-plus frames. I also think hitters have adjusted well to his change up. He’s getting too predictable. His curveball is average at best, so at this point in his young career, the guy has two pitches (change-up/fastball). Like I said, hitters can guess easily. For the most part, though, Hamels hasn’t been making very good pitches this year. Even though batters have adjusted against him, when Hamels is rolling, he’s unhittable. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case for most of the year. He’s been, in two words, very ordinary. Also keep in mind that Hamels isn’t a Cliff Lee. Sure Hamels has proven to be a clutch pitcher, but he’s not a bulldog. You have to treat him like fragile glass. Something tells me that he’ll work on some things in the offseason and come back a completely different pitcher next season. That said, I still have all the confidence that he’s on the verge of breaking out in September and in October, as he did last year when he carried the pitching staff.
DirtySanchez(TRDMB) & TRS(TRDMB): How do you feel the Phillies will react to being the hunted rather than the hunter going into September with the marlins and possibly the braves within striking distance?
Matt S(PP):The Phillies have handled the pressure very well. I know the Marlins sweep left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, but they responded very nicely winning 7 of 8 through Wednesday. That’s the thing about this team: they respond. When you think they’re on the verge of a New York Mets-like collapse job (I’m sorry Mets friends!), they keep coming back. These guys are winners. The “pressure” argument is moot at this point. If they were “feeling the pressure,” would they be 19 games over .500 and 6 games up in the division? I don’t think so. There is no pressure on this team. And if there is, they use it to their advantage. There’s no question in my mind that they will play their best baseball in September and win the division handily.
TRS(TRDMB): To Mets fans it seems as though the Phillies and their fans are obsessed with the Mets. Does it seem that the opposite is true to the Phillies fans?
Matt S(PP):Obsessed with Mets fans? Listen… both fanbases have their idiots. I’m sure idiot Phillies fans go on Mets message boards rubbing it in that the Mets are having a lousy season. The same can be said about Mets fans, you know, the idiotic fans who go on Phillies message boards claiming the Mets are better than the Phillies when healthy. I don’t think for one second that Phillies are obsessed with Mets fans. At this point, the Mets are as irrelevant as Paris Hilton in the eyes of Phillies fans (the majority, that is). It sucks that the rivalry is no where near as passionate as it’s been the last two years, but that’s because the Mets resemble a semi-pro club right now. Let’s hope that next year will be a different story so we can all have some fun again. Maybe this upcoming series will rekindle the fire just a bit.
Thanks Matt and on to DirtySanchez of The Real Dirty Mets Blog.
Mark(CFG): The Mets are going to revamp in the offseason, what would recommend as their first move?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): Fire Omar Minaya…just kidding(sort of). We are in need of a #2 starter or power from the OF. I believe their first move should be trying to either sign a #2 type FA pitcher or work on a trade for one. Most likely Bay will remain in Boston and the fight for Holiday will get ugly.
Mark(CFG): The signing of Stephen Strasburg has made every GM focus on their own farm system. Do the Mets have a Stephen Strasburg-in waiting that they can look forward to next year of the year after?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): We have pitching prospects but none on the caliber of Stephen Strasburg. Our two best pitching prospects are Jenrry Mejia and Brad Holt. Neither of them will be ready by next year but Mejia may be ML ready come 2011.
Mark(CFG): Will Omar Minaya get fired? Should he?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): That is the magic question. There are several factors to consider with a move like that. Omar Minaya executed an extension prior to this season that will go into effect in 2010. Now that extension is chump change but it would seem rather unprecedented for someone to get canned before their extension kicks in. Another factor has been his body of work. Since Omar took over the Mets payroll has increased every year and they were able to put a competitive team together(except for this year of course). The problem with the evaluation of that is in all that time(5 yrs) the Mets only have a Division title(2006) to show for it. With the Adam Rubin situation and Tony Bernazard most likely not helping Omars chances, it will defiantly be a focal point going into the offseason. The one thing you never want to do is take on the NY media…Should be interesting to see if Omar Minaya can live to tell about it
Mark(CFG): The injury to David Wright was part of a spate of similar beanings — and thankfully he’s okay. But he lacks the power this year he had last year and seems uncertain at third. Will he bounce back? What can we expect of him playing an entire career in non-homer friendly Citi Field?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB):David Wright has been very consistent every year he has been up in the major leagues, given his history im sure he will bounce back. David Wright made it known that he made an adjustment to hit more line drives this year. Now, many people do not buy this as an excuse but I think Davids production should be treated with a certain degree of latitude. This is his first year in Citi Field and im sure there is always an adjustment period(unless you play at Yankee Stadium) to the quirks and dimensions of a new ballpark. The first opposite field HR in Citi Field was hit by David Wright in August! I think David will adjust to Citi Field and learn where to swing to go for the homeruns. As many people have proven(Mark Reynolds especially)..it is possible to hit HR in Citi Field, you just got to know where to hit them.
Matt R(NLEC): How much has the Mets season and injuries effected what was and is still being advertised as a great weekend for Mets games, complete with the 1969 celebration? Will you still watch/go?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): I believe the new ballpark has a lot to do with the fans continued interest on this season. The injuries have played a HUGE role in this season as Im sure anyone would be hard pressed to find a team that can lose quality players such as Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, David Wright, John Maine and JJ Putz and still remain competitive. I will still watch only because it should be interesting to see the Mets play the role of spoiler to contending teams…a role they have not had to be in for quite some time.

Please feel free to email any recommend questions or comments about the segment to mrose@nleastchatter.com or go to this forum topic and post a reply.  Lets also hope thats the first and last time that Paris Hilton was referenced on this blog eh?  :)

Roy who?

Roy who?

Cliff Lee has been absolutely outstanding for the Phillies since being traded in late July.  Lee(4-0) turned in his fourth straight solid, or in this case terrific outting as he threw a complete game while allowing only two hits and one run while striking out eleven while winning 8-1.  His ERA in the National League is now 0.82 in his four starts, and the Phillies must have no regrets about not picking up Roy Halladay.  Ryan Howard and the Phillies supported him with eight runs, including a three run home from Ryan Howard, two solo shots from Jayson Werth and a two run shot from Chase Utley.  Since the Marlins lost,  they added a game to their lead in the division, Phillies Phandom will have more on this.

The Diamondbacks sent their ace to the hill in this game as well, and the game didn’t have the magic that everyone expected.  Danny Haren could only last five innings and he allowed six runs and nine hits.  Haren(12-8) has now given up five or more runs in three of his past four starts, raising his ERA from 2.19 at the end of July to 2.74 now.  For the second straight night, the D’backs only managed a single run and Stephen Drew produced it, this time on a sacrifice fly.

Couldn't get the big hit

Couldn't get the big hit

The Houston Astros managed to get the win 6-3 last night, despite using six different pitchers throughout the game.  The offense took the lead in the bottom of the first though and never looked back, happy that Lance Berkman got back in the swing of things with an RBI double to tie it early.  Starting pitcher Yorman Bazardo only lasted 4.2 innings and gave up only two runs in the first but left with runners on and a high pitch count.  Sammy Gervacio(1-0) got his first win while recording the final out in the fifth inning and using only five pitches.  Jose Valverde got his 17th save of the season in the 6-3 win.

The Florida Marlins once again did get more than ten hits a game, extending the franchise record and getting closer to the National League record.  Too bad hits don’t always turn into runs though, as they could only muster three runs and one after the first.  Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla contributed RBI singles and then Ross Glaud capped the Fish scoring in the sixth with an RBI double.  Sean West(4-5) lasted only four and gave up three earned runs and four total and left after only 62 pitches.  FishGuts has more on this Marlins loss and their push to the playoffs.

Ouch

Ouch

The Atlanta Braves were able to return the favor the Mets gave them on Tuesday night with their own eight run inning.  The Braves scored eight in the second and the game was more than over at that point on their way to a 15-2 victory.  Brian McCann hit a three run home run and Adam LaRoche and Matt Diaz joined him in that homer party.  Diaz finished with four RBI and Infante added three RBI as well.  Jair Jurrjens(10-8) didn’t have to work hard for this win and got six innings done with only two runs and allowed eight hits.  The Braves Baseball Blog is the place to go for all Braves info as well.

Once again, what is to say about the Mets game?  Luis Castillo made a mental error and didn’t cover second on a double play ball and Bobby Parnell never recovered.  Parnell(3-5) got through three innings and allowed nine runs on nine hits and two walks a far cry from his previous gem of a game.  Angel Pagan had an RBI double and Luis Castillo also drove in a run, but this one was over early and the Mets even replaced many of the starters to save them from the looming injury cloud on the team.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog is the place to go for all Mets info.

on fire!

on fire!

Last night Carlos Gonzalez once again got the big hit for the Rockies, as he hit what would be the eventual winning home run in the eighth inning for the Rockies.  Clint Barmes also hit his second homer in as many days and the Rockies went on to win 5-4.  Jason Marquis(14-8) worked six innings allowing nine hits and three runs and only striking out one and once again Huston Street got the save, his 31st, but not without a problem as he gave up a solo shot.  The Rockies go for the sweep tonight.

Colin Balester(1-3) was awful for the Nationals last night, he only got through 1.1 innings and allowed three runs only three hits but five walks.  Ryan Zimmerman stayed hot, going 2-3 with a walk and two RBI’s on a double and a triple in the game.  Josh Bard contributed a solo shot in the ninth inning to bring the Nationals within a run, but they could not get closer.  Centerfieldgate has more info on the Nationals and what is going on with their team.

D'backs Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(66-49, 1st in NL East) had a good weekend against the Braves and put a slight bit of distance between those two teams now.  The Marlins also won two out of three games, so the Marlins still stand 4.5 games back, so the Phillies still have a fire lit under them.  This week, they begin by welcoming in the Arizona Diamondbacks who they took two out of three from late last month.  The Phillies are coming off a strong week, going 5-1 with a series victory this weekend and a sweep in Chicago last week.  They hope that Pedro Martinez can give another solid outting and the rest of the offense will begin to help Ryan Howard throughout this series. Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(54-65, 4th in NL West 16GB) re playing well of late, except for a series sweep in Washington last weekend.  They beat the Mets two of three games last weekend and then even took two out of three from the division leading National League West Dodgers this past weekend.  They lost a makeup game to the the Braves and  will make a trip to Houston to end the week.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:05PM EST – Garland,ARI(6-10,4.28 ERA) vs. Martinez,PHI(1-0,5.40 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:05PM EST – Haren,ARI(12-7,2.50 ERA) vs. Lee,PHI(10-9,2.86 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:05PM EST – Davis,ARI(7-10,3.59 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(7-6,3.88 ERA)
Marlins Logo VS Astros Logo
The Florida Marlins(63-55, 2nd in NL East 4.5GB, 2GB of wildcard) had a successful weekend at home, taking two of three from the wildcard leading Rockies.  This was immediately after a week in which they came off a sweep of the Phillies and followed that for three of four from the Astros at home.  This combines to give them a 8-2 since being swept by the Washington Nationals.  They have a favorable schedule coming up to gain ground in the division and wildcard coming up, starting with three at the Astros this week. FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Houston Astros(57-61, 4th in NL Central 10GB) are now back to being sellers and playing for next year.  Just a few weeks ago, it was possible they could make a run for the wildcard and very possibly the division, but this has changed.  Losers of five of seven games, the Astros have even recently traded away catcher Pudge Rodriguez to the Rangers for two minor leaguers.  One bright spot is that they did recently get Lance Berkman back from the disabled list.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 8:05PM EST – Nolasco,FLA(8-8,5.44 ERA) vs. Norris,HOU(3-0,3.00 ERA)
Wednesday @ 8:05PM EST – West,FLA(4-4,4.57 ERA) vs. Bazardo,HOU(0-0,5.06 ERA)
Thursday @ 8:05PM EST – Johnson,FLA(12-2,2.85 ERA) vs. Rodriguez,HOU(11-7,3.05 ERA)
Braves Logo VS Mets Logo
The Atlanta Braves(62-56, 3rd in NL East 5.5GB 3GB of wildcard) had a rough weekend against the Phillies after climbing back into both the divisional and wildcard races in the National League.  They were hurt by Ryan Howard against the Phillies as he produced all four runs last night and hit the eventual winning home run on Friday.  They still only stand 6 games back of the division and 3.5 back of the wildcard.  They were able to then rebound and take the only game against the Diamondbacks in a makeup from May.They now head to NY to face the Mets and  The Braves Baseball Blog has more on both series.

The New York Mets(55-63, 4th in NL East 12.5GB) can not get a break this season when it comes to injuries.  This past weekend in a very scary moment, David Wright was hit in the head with a pitch in an eventual loss against the Giants.  They were able to rebound and win one for him the next day but could not finish off a series win last night.  The Mets will continue to play out the string, even as the Disabled list rises and a victory now means “no new injuries” to them.   The Real Dirty Mets Blog is your place to go for more information on the Mets.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:10PM EST – Lowe,ATL(12-7,4.08 ERA) vs. Perez,NYM(2-3,5.97 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:10PM EST – Jurrjens,ATL(9-8,2.99 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(3-4,3.50 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:10PM EST – Kawakami,ATL(5-9,4.13 ERA) vs. Santana,NYM(13-8,3.10 ERA)
Rockies Logo VS Nats Logo
The Washington Nationals(43-75, 5th in NL East 24.5GB) were able to turn around a small losing streak of three games after an eight game winning streak.  This was new thing to see out of this Nationals team.  They were able to take the final three games against the Reds and the offense seems to have restarted itself.  They now will go into a pretty big test for a team that may have found its way, facing the wildcard leading Rockies.  There are a couple teams in the division though that will be big Nats fans this week, hoping the Nats can do them a solid. CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats, be sure to check them out.

The Colorado Rockies(63-53, 2nd in NL West, 1st in Wildcard) look to use this matchup against the last place Nationals to gain back the game they lost this weekend in the wildcard standings.  The Rockies took two of three and exploited the Rockies pitching while gaining a game on them in the wildcard and not allowing them to put any distance with others as well.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:05PM EST – Jimenez,COL(10-9,3.47 ERA) vs. Stammen,WAS(3-6,5.24 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:05PM EST – Marquis,COL(13-8,3.55 ERA) vs. Balester,WAS(1-2,6.00 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:05PM EST – Hammel,COL(7-7,4.73 ERA) vs. Mock,WAS(2-4,5.27 ERA)

Welcome to Chatter Up! again here at NLEC. This edition matches up the Phillies Blog, Phillies Phandom being represented by Matt Smith against Matt Fournier of The Braves Baseball Blog. Its a battle of the Matt’s and its a big series for both teams. Lets get right to it!
MrNorthJersey(NLEC): What team scares you most if you make the postseason?
Matt S(PP): When we win a third consecutive NL East title, the team that still worries me the most is the Giants. Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain are a great one-two punch. If the Braves can squeeze in, their pitching could give us fits, too. I’m confident that we can put away any other team rather handily, including the Dodgers and Cardinals. The Marlins are like that little kid who keeps hanging around the bigger kids just to be cool. He wants to be just like you, and it becomes annoying, but after a while he goes away.
TRS(TRDMB):Is there a fear that the Phillies can’t seem to put teams away? Does it seem that the Phillies are much better as underdogs than top dogs?
Matt S(PP):The Phillies like to make things interesting. I know this question stems directly from the Marlins’ three-game sweep. In my view, the Marlins caught us at a good time. Our middle-of-the-order wasn’t hitting. Actually, the entire lineup was in a funk. Also, keep in mind the Marlins did not face either J.A. Happ or Cliff Lee. They feasted on two struggling pitchers (Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer). It seems like we do things the hard way, though . We could have been 10 games in front in the division, yes, but what fun would that be??? I want to play meaningful baseball in September. I don’t want to sit around watching Triple-A call-ups take the field for the final two weeks of the season. Are the Phillies better as the underdog? That’s hard to tell because they’ve been in first place for so long, but it does seem they turn it up a notch when the going gets tough. This is a clutch ball club and they play their best when it really, really matters.
Mark P(CFG): For Phillies: what’s wrong with Cole Hamels? Can you survive with a mix and match bullpen?
Matt S(PP): Hamels’ amazing 2008 season has had a negative carry over effect this year. It all started when he declared himself not ready for his first start way back in April. The guy let the fame of being World Series MVP get to his head a little, and as a result, I don’t think he took his offseason preparation very serious. Hamels is fragile glass. You have to be careful with him. Frankly, I think he doesn’t have the same spin on his pitches because he’s been so overworked the last 12-18 months. I still believe the best thing to do is shut him down for a few weeks and let him rest.
Matt R(NLEC): What is your take on the Victorino beer soaking, did he do the right thing by going to police? It seems that non Phils fans think he is being a “sissy” and others feel he did the right thing. My view on the situation will surprise you, but what do you think. It has been a busy week for Shane, eh?(Source: Twitter twits)
Matt S(PP):I’m tired of this Shane Victorino bashing, but that comes with the territory when you’re a World Champ and an All-Star, I guess. The same fans that bash Victorino for ANYTHING he does are just jealous that
Matt R(NLEC): At this time, once again, the Braves hitter or pitcher who strikes the most fear into you?
Matt S(PP):erek Lowe and Chipper Jones. Lowe dominated us on Opening Day and Chipper is a Hall of Famer.
Thanks Matt Smith, Matt Fournier of The Braves Baseball Blog is next.
Mr North Jersey(NLEC): Based on what you seen since trade would you still do the frenchy for church trade?
Matt F(BBB): Idk to be honest, I always liked Frenchy I just thought a change of location was for the best for him as a player. I like Church, but he hasn’t been the same since the concussion problem. But yes I would still do the trade, maybe not for Church haha.
TRS(TRDMB): Do you think you have enough offense down the stretch to make it competitive and will Chipper be able to contribute?
Matt F(BBB): Offense is a always a problem with recent Atlanta teams, but I think this one has the weapons it is if the can be consistent enough to be competitive. Chippers production will always be there if he is able to stay HEALTHY. Keyword if, but I’m hoping he’ll consistently be in the lineup down the stretch.
Matt R(NLEC): It seems the Braves are being a bit jekyl and Hyde, they win a bunch, offense is great, etc, then lose some. Currently they look like they are firing on all cylinders, what is the key to that right now?
Matt F(BBB): The pitching will be there it just is a matter of the hitting whether or not is consisten enough to put together a good string of wins for the team. Offense consistency is and will be the determining factor in how the rest of the season goes for Braves.
Matt R(NLEC): Kenshin Kawakami: How has he made you feel about signing him this year, good/bad? indifferent?
Matt F(BBB): He has been a good number 5 starter, nothing special, but he is another consistent performer for this excellent pitching staff that the Braves have.
Matt R(NLEC): Phillies hitter and pitcher that scares ya..you know the deal
Matt F(BBB): Hitter has to be to Victorino, he has the potential to hurt you in so many ways. And as for pitcher it was Joe Blanton(even though he already pitched in the series). He has been pitching very well as of late and pitched very well against the Braves in this series

Phillies Logo VS Braves Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(64-48, 1st in NL East) may have finally figured out their troubles since the trade deadline this week.  This week, after being swept by the Marlins, the offense may have finally come back to life during a three game set in Chicago.  Cliff Lee has been outstanding as he has three wins in as many games and even Ben Francisco was the hero for a night on Monday.  They will look to put some space between themselves and the third place Braves and do better against a division rival than they did last weekend.  Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Atlanta Braves(60-54, 3rd in NL East 5GB, 3.5GB of wildcard) have won five straight and seven out of eight games.  It started last week with a west coast swing where they took two of three from the lowly Padres and then were able to take three out of four from the Dodgers and gain ground in the playoffs races.  This week they swept the Nats in a two game set and will hope to stay close in both playoff races.  Martin Prado and Yunel Escobar are still on fire for the Braves and they hope Nate McClouth will be back soon as he has been day to day. The Braves Baseball Blog has more info on the series and the game.

Be sure to check back for the Chatter Up! Between these two blogs today.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Blanton,PHI(7-6,4.02 ERA) vs. Jurrjens,ATL(9-8,3.01 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:00PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-7,4.77 ERA) vs. Kawakami,ATL(5-9,4.12 ERA)
Sunday @ 8:00PM EST – Happ,PHI(8-2,2.75 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-7,2.90 ERA)
Rockies Logo VS Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlins(61-54, 2nd in NL East 4.5GB, 3GB of wildcard) seemed to get a wakeup call last week when they were swept by the Nationals.  Since that time, they are 6-1 including a series sweep last weekend of the division leading Phillies.  They took three of four from the Astros this week and head into a VERY important series.  They welcome in the wildcard leading Colorado Rockies for three games and could potentially leave town being tied for the wildcard if they can pull off a sweep.  They will send Josh Johnson to the mound in the opener, so that is working for them.  FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Colorado Rockies(64-51 2nd in NL West 5GB, 1st in NL Wildcard) have been on fire since the All-Star break except for a rough patch against the Phillies a week ago.  This week they came off a three of four from the Cubs and finished with two of three at home against the Pirates with three large wins.  The Rox are currently leading the wildcard, but they do have teams hot on their tail, including the Giants at only 1.5 gmaes back, the Marlins as mentioned above and the Braves only 3.5 games back.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Hammel,COL(7-6,4.66 ERA) vs. Johnson,FLA(11-2,2.92 ERA)
Saturday @ 6:10PM EST – Cook,COL(10-4,3.93 ERA) vs. VandenHurk,FLA(2-1,4.15 ERA)
Sunday @ 5:05PM EST – De La Rosa,COL(10-8,4.78 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(8-9,4.71 ERA)
Giants Logo VS Mets Logo
The New York Mets(61-54, 4th in NL East 12GB) have a lot of red L’s on the schedule for the past few weeks.  The talks of the team not shaving until they made it to .500 are long gone as over the past 13 games are only 4-9 and the schedule has not been that difficult.  They have lost those games to the Diamondbacks and Padres mainly with a couple against the Central division leading Cardinals for two.  the injuries don’t appear to end for the Mets, and this week they found out Delgado may also be done for the year.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog is your place to go for more information on the Mets.
The San Francisco Giants(62-52, 3rd in NL West 6.5GB, 2nd in Wildcard 1.5GB) have hit rough times in the past week and with that, fell out of the wildcard lead.  The Giants lose two of three to the Reds last weekend and then followed that up with a series loss to the Dodgers, but did take the final game on their way to New York.  They will hope their pitching continues to impress in this series and going forward as they do extend after this four game set to Cincinnati and finally on to the Rockies next weekend.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Zito,SF(8-10,4.40 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(2-4,3.94 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:10PM EST – Cain,SF(12-4,2.44 ERA) vs. Santana,NYM(13-8,3.00 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Sanchez,SF(5-10,4.61 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-8,4.88 ERA)
Monday @ 7:10PM EST – Martinez,SF(2-1,6.00 ERA) vs. Hernandez,NYM(7-7,5.28 ERA)
Nationals Logo VS Reds Logo
The Washington Nationals(40-74, 5th in NL East 24.5GB) followed up their eight game winning streak by losing two games in a row by a combined 14-3 score. Whatever had gotten into their bats definitely made its way right back out during this past two game set against the Braves. They will now travel for Cincinnati to begin a four game set against the Reds and hope their hitting and pitching can go back to last week’s levels. In The Great American Ballpark, they certainly have a good chance of getting some hits, but the pitching could still struggle. CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats, be sure to check them out.

The Cincinnati Reds(49-64, 5th in NL Central 13.5GB) are one of many teams who have already wrote off the season and you may even see more trades from. Oddly, they did make a few trades at the deadline, but unless they go on an insane winning streak, they will not sniff the playoffs. They will send a pitcher to the mound in this series that has been the subject of trade talks for a while, Bronson Arroyo and likely their closer Francisco Cordero will be seen too, who also has been in rumors.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Thursday @ 7:10PM EST – Reds 7 Nationals 0
Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Mock,WAS(1-4,6.14 ERA) vs. Harang,CIN(6-13,4.43 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Martin,WAS(1-2,5.91 ERA) vs. Cueto,CIN(8-9,4.23 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-9,3.58 ERA) vs. Lehr,CIN(2-0,1.80 ERA)

Howard breaks out of a slump

Howard breaks out of a slump

The Phillies did something yesterday they had not done since 1984, sweep the Cubs in Chicago.  In the fourth inning, Ryan Howard broke out of the longest home run drought of his career, depositing a three run homer that would provide all the runs the Phillies needed with Cliff Lee on the mound.  Cliff Lee(3-0) went eight strong innings and only allowed six hits and run run, but did walk three to get his third win in as many tries and he is now undefeated in the NL with a 1.12 ERA.  Pedro Feliz also hit a home run in the fourth inning a few batters after Ryan Howard and drove Howard in for an insurance run in the sixth.  Phillies Phandom has more on the Phillies sweep.

Ryan Desmpter started out well for the Cubs as through the first three innings he looked virtually unhittable.  Dempster(6-6) ended up going six innings and gave up all six runs and eight hits in taking a loss for the Cubs.  Ryan Theriot produced the only run for the Cubs as he drove in Jake Baker in the fifth inning.

Cantu with a blast to start it off

Cantu with a blast to start it off

Jorge Cantu hit a two run home run for the Marlins and that was the start of another win, and series win for the Marlins.  They never relinquished that lead and they exploded once starter Mike Hampton left after the fifth against the Astros relief.  Ronnie Paulino contributed a solo home run in that inning and Hanley Ramirez had a two run single as well.  Sean West(4-4) went six innings and allowed only one run and was able to cruise to the victory after the sixth inning outburst.  FishGuts has more information on this win for the Marlins and their march to get closer to the playoffs.

Mike Hampton started yesterdays game with a slightly bum leg.  Hampton(7-10) lasted five decent innings and left with his team having a shot at the game after allowing six hits and three runs, but allowing two home runs.  The Bullpen imploded and only Hampton’s RBI single and Darren Erstad’s single in the ninth put a dent in the scoreboard for the Astros.

Gomes hits three straight bombs

Gomes hits three straight bombs

Jonny Gomes had a humongous games yesterday for the Cincinnati Reds as he went 3-4 with three runs scored and five RBI on THREE straight at bats with a home.  The Reds did not need much more offense to win this one but Ryan Hanigan also homered and Brandon Phillips had an RBI double late to lead the Reds to the 7-0 win over the Nats.  Bronson Arroyo(11-11) went the distance while being virtually unhittable giving up only two hits and one walk against the suddenly hapless Nationals.

The Nationals, as CenterfieldGate mentions, have now only scored three runs in their past three games and the offense has completely shut down.  Ryan Zimmerman did extend his hitting streak with a single, but Christian Guzman’s has ended, with the entire lineup looking terrible.  Colin Balester(1-2) did not help much either as he only went five innings and allowed five runs and two walks while giving up three home runs.  CenterfieldGate covers this game and more for all the Nats fans.

Phillies Logo VS Cubs Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(61-48, 1st in NL East) have actually not been very good since they acquired Cliff Lee at the deadline.  Cliff Lee is 2-0 and J.A. Happ has one win, but that is all as the Phillies were most recently swept by the Marlins.  Some of the bigger news out of Philly was the controversial ejection of Shane Victorino from centerfield and Pedro Martinez making his 2009 debut as Jamie Moyer goes to the pen. Check out Phillies Phandom for more on both of these issues and the series at hand.

The Chicago Cubs(58-52, 2nd in NL Central 3GB, 3GB in WildCard) were shot down pretty hard this weekend as they lost three out of four to the Rockies to lose ground in both the wildcard and divisional races.  The final two games they lost by a combined score of 22-10 and even though the Phillies lost three in a row, this isn’t a welcome matchup for the Cubbies.  They will hope to gain ground in both races, as they are an equal amount out in each.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 8:05PM EST – Happ,PHI(8-2,2.74 ERA) vs. Harden,CHI(7-7,4.41 ERA)
Wednesday @ 8:05PM EST – Martinez,PHI(0-0,- ERA) vs. Samardzija,CHI(1-1,6.29 ERA)
Thursday @ 2:20PM EST – Lee,PHI(9-9,2.95 ERA) vs. Dempster,CHI(6-5,4.04 ERA)
Astros Logo VS Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlins(58-53, 2nd in NL East 4GB, 3GB in WildCard) reassured their fans that they don’t plan on fading out of this race after a dismal showing in Washington last week. The Florida Marlins went into the city of brotherly love this weekend and swept the Phillies to pull back within four games of the lead. They did this with solid pitching, timely hitting and by finally getting to their nemesis, Jamie Moyer. They will hope to get closer to the division and wildcard this week as they welcome in the bubble riding Houston Astros for a four game set. FishGuts has all the info on this series and more.

The Houston Astros(55-56, 3rd in NL Central, 6GB of wild card) continue to flounder in between competing and playing for next year. Just when you are about to count them out, they will take a series and play well enough to be considered a contender. They currently come into this series six games back of both divisional and wildcard races after an up and down week, ending by taking two of three from the division rival Milwaukee Brewers to pull into a third place tie with them.

Note: At this point Mike Hampton is scheduled to make his start on Thursday despite a torn meniscus in his knee, so this could change.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Monday @ 7:10PM EST – Marlins 8 Astros 6
Tuesday @ 7:10PM EST – Oswalt,HOU(6-4,3.61 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(8-9,4.48 ERA)
Wednesday@ 7:10PM EST-Norris,HOU(2-0,1.69 ERA) vs. Nolasco,FLA(8-7,4.86 ERA)
Thursday @ 7:10PM EST -Hampton,HOU(7-9,5.30 ERA) vs. West,FLA(3-4,4.88 ERA)
Nats Logo VS Braves Logo
The Atlanta Braves(58-54, 3rd in NL East 4.5GB, 4GB of Wild Card) head into the series with the Washington Nationals in a way which many probably did not expect.  The Braves have won five of six while on a west coast string against the Padres and finally four against the Dodgers.  They played great against the Dodgers and may actually have a tougher task in front of them, in the Washington Nationals.  The Braves were also able to gain ground on the Phillies this weekend as the Marlins helped their cause in sweeping them. The Braves Baseball Blog will have more information on the Braves for you.

The Washington Nationals(40-72, 5th in NL East 22.5GB) are absolutely on fire.  They have now won eight straight games and their hitting carried them this weekend, and even had some good pitching to boot.  Ryan Zimmerman, Elijah Dukes, Christian Guzman are hitting everything that comes their way and the others on the team aren’t too shabby either.  They may not be in contention for the playoffs, but this late streak at least makes them assured they won’t break the record for most losses this year and hopefully gives Nats fans a warm feeling for next year.  Check out Centerfieldgate for more information on the Nationals.

Check the latest Chatter Up! for a back and forth with the teams!

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Tuesday @ 7:00 PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-8,3.39 ERA) vs. Hanson,ATL(6-2,3.22 ERA)
Wednesday @ 7:00PM EST – Stammen,WAS(11-7,4,15 ERA) vs. Lowe,ATL(11-7,4.15 ERA)
Mets Logo VS D'Backs Logo
The New York Mets(52-59, 4th in NL East 10GB, 9GB of Wild Card) are enduring yet another grueling west coast trip this year. Sunday’s win in San Diego was their first in their last eight tries against an opponent in California dating back to May. Lucky(or not?) for them, they enter Arizona this week where they are outstanding over the past few seasons, dating back to 2006. They at the least need better results than they received a couple weekends ago when the D’Backs took three of four from the Mets in New York just after the Mets had played a few solid games straight. Check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more Mets information.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(50-62, 4th in NL West 17GB) were on quite a roll while entering the Nations capital this past weekend. That all stopped as the Washington Nationals beat them in three straight and left them reeling, defeating even their ace Danny Haren on the way. They do have continued success from Mark Reynolds who now has 36 home runs for the Diamondbacks. The D’Backs hope returning home will help them get back to winning ways.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Monday @ 9:40PM EST – Diamondbacks 7 Mets 4
Tuesday @ 9:40PM EST – Hernandez,NYM(7-6,5.08 ERA) vs. Scherzer,ARI(6-6,4.01 ERA)
Wednesday @ 3:40PM EST – Perez,NYM(2-3,6.38 ERA) vs. Garland,ARI(6-10,4.33 ERA)

Marlins Logo chatterup Phillies Logo
Welcome to Chatter Up! here at NLEC. This edition will match up Rab Bethan of FishGuts for his first appearance, but Fishguts’ third, as the Marlins travel to Philly after a sweep at the hands of the Nats. Matt Smith of Phillies Phandom makes his first of many appearances after a Phillies series win against the Rockies. Enjoy!
Matt R(NLEC): How is Nick Johnson changing this team through his first week?
Rab B(FG): He’s been absolutely great since joining. In the 6 games with the Fish he’s gotten on base every time, hitting .400/.567/.600. It’s completely change the completion of the lineup, replacing a sub.-300 OBP with the 5th best OBP in the league in front of the NL batting leader in Hanley Ramirez. There was worry of a defensive problem with Cantu moving back across the diamond but after a couple miscues against the Cubs in his first game at 3rd base he’s been solid.
Matt R(NLEC): Did what just happened against the Nats make you rethink this

season’s possibilities?

Rab B(FG):Well, obviously any time you lose three straight games going into the stretch, it makes you rethink your post-season aspirations. Now, when you consider to whom and how we lost these games, it really shakes you. But these are flaws that we already knew we had with the team, mainly inconsistent pitching and a problem getting “big hits”. This team still has a chance at making the playoffs though, being only 4 games out of the wild card. I think at this point I think that the division is probably out of the question but, after the 2007 Mets, you can’t ever count that out.
Matt R(NLEC): What happened this week? The pitching seemed to just falter.
Rab B(FG):Like I said, the Marlins for one just couldn’t get a big hit. In the first two games the team was only 4-18 with RISP and couldn’t add on runs at the end. In the third game they managed 8 runs but still had trouble adding on, only going 5-19. But really what killed that last game was a bad start from Volstad and bad choices of relievers. I don’t usually blame managing but in that game manager Fredi Gonzalez and bench coach Carlos Tosca only threw out the worst relievers we had, even when it was a 1 run game at the end.
Matt R(NLEC): What are the keys to this weekends set in Philly? Is this make or

break the season time?

Rab B(FG):When playing in Citizens Bank Park it’s always important to try to add on as many runs as possible. No matter how good your pitching is no lead is safe there, especially not against a team with so many great hitters up and down the lineup. Obviously you want your pitching to do it’s work on that end but there’s only so much you can do in that sandbox. And yes, this is very much make or break. Every game left is do or die, especially considering how well put together the Phillies and the other teams in the Wild Card race are.
Matt R(NLEC): What Phils pitcher and Hitter scare you the most?
Rab B(FG): As far as pitchers go only one name in the probable pitchers section puts fear into the heart of Marlins fans like no one else’s, Jamie Moyer. He’s 13-2 with a 2.83 against us and gives our hitters absolute fits. And as far as hitters I don’t think there are many hitters more intimidating in baseball than Ryan Howard. You can argue that Chase Utley is the better overall hitter but every time you face Howard, especially in CBP, you know there’s a huge chance the ball could end up the in the next stratosphere.
Thanks Rab, great debut, we will move on to Matt Smith from Phillies Phandom now.
Matt R(NLEC): (via MrNorthJersey) How much buzz if any is there among Philly fans

about all the injuries that the Mets have endured this year and do you think fans care either way that they did not get to play the Mets at their best in 2009?

Matt S(PP): The Mets are not a concern at all. The Phils’ sweep at Citizens Bank Park over 4th of July weekend was kind of the turning point for both teams. The Phillies got back on the winning track while the Mets headed in the wrong direction. At this point in the season, the Mets are so far off the radar, nobody cares (our biggest issues is the starting rotation and not any one team). I think fans simply do not care that the Mets aren’t at full strength. In my view, though, beating the Mets at their current state is nothing to brag about. It’s a shame because the rivalry has taken a step back, but at the same time, we worry about our business first and foremost and ignore what the Mets are doing as long as they aren’t winning :-)
Matt R(NLEC):Looking back on the Cliff Lee trade, were you initially

disappointed it wasn’t Halladay?

Matt S(PP):Yes. Who wouldn’t be? But I realized the Phillies traded for probably the best left-handed pitcher in the AL for a whole lot less. Halladay would have been great to have, but the way I see it, both pitchers are equal. They are true staff aces. The fans have welcomed Lee with open arms. The best way to answer is, “Roy Who?”
Matt R(NLEC): Did Cliff Lee make the Phils the NL favorites? What teams, in

either league are the biggest threat to a Phils repeat?

Matt S(PP): I think the Phillies are favorites, yes. But, then again, I thought the Phillies were the best team in the NL long before the Cliff Lee trade. :-) Honestly, the only team that worries me in the NL is the Giants. Who’d want to face that starting staff? They showed over the weekend that they could beat us. Moreover, the Phillies could not hit at all in that ballpark. Braves have take 7 of 9 against us, and they have great pitching, too. In the AL, the Red Sox and Angels worry me the most. I know the Yankees are probably the best team in the majors right now, but Boston and Los Angeles absolutely dominated the Phillies last season in interleague play. We were so overmatched. That’s still fresh in my mind.
Matt R(NLEC): How huge have Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth been this year? As an outsider it appears the Phils would not be nearly as successful without them.
Matt S(PP):Victorino and Werth have had career seasons. When Jimmy Rollins was struggling, Victorino was the offensive sparkplug. He kind of carried things when J-Roll wasn’t hitting. Victorino always had great potential, and so did Werth. I worry that Werth will crash and fall sooner than later, but right now he’s hitting for power, driving in runs and playing a hell of a right field. Werth and Victorino just needed a chance to play everyday and the Phillies gave them a chance. They have been big keys to the team’s success.
Matt R(NLEC): Which Marlins hitter AND pitcher scare you the most?
Matt S(PP):Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson. However, the biggest Phillies Killer is Wes Helms. It boggles my mind how good he hits against the Phillies. Helms and Rod Barajas were awful as members of the Phillies in 2007, but both have come back to haunt us on other teams.
