ESPN Picks are in

ESPN has posted all of their predictions for NL/AL playoff teams and wild card winners.  Not surprisingly, there is a huge amount of people picking the Red Sox to come out of the American League, with some sprinkled in Yankees a few random picks like the White Sox or the Rays.
In the National League, there are more people than I expected thinking the Braves would make it to the Fall Classic, but the Phillies are still everyone’s favorite.  I am surprised that with the love affair that is the Phillies and their potentially potent rotation, the number of people who pick them not to make it to the World Series and in some cases, not even make the playoffs.

Click here to check the picks out yourself and discuss.  One other note, in case you were delirious and were hoping, not one person picked the Mets, Nationals or Marlins to even make the playoffs.

The Point Is….

I have decided on the title of my running article which I hope will continue to run on this website. As there were no comments on my previous article, I will assume that a) No One Cares or b) I am the only person reading it.

Where have you gone Mr. Jones?

Where have you gone Mr. Jones?

I dont blame anyone. At this point in the baseball season, nothing is happening. Minor free agents are signing meaningless contracts, i.e., Andruw Jones & Alex Gonzalez, and teams are posturing. Many “sources” provide fodder for Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and the like. Will the Blue Jays trade Roy Halladay? Who knows, but it is better to speculate about it then write nothing at all. Hell, if all ESPN and SI can put out is conjecture what the hell am I going to say.

The point is, there isnt much to say. Until the first domino falls, no one knows how this offseason will shape up.

How about Andrew/Andruw/Andru Jones? Remember when he hit 2 HR’s in a World Series game against the Yankees? What happened to him? Did he just lose confidence? Did he not try hard enough? Did he eat his way out of baseball? Or is he a casualty of the steroid era? I mean at this point, how could you at least not speculate that a guy who was productive and durable came crashing to the earth at around the same time steroids became a big deal. I am not saying that he took steroids. The point is that he could have taken steroids or some other performance enhancing substance. Or his career could have simply followed a bell curve, who knows. I certainly dont. However, that is what a blog is for, to voice an opinion and let the people decide one way or another.

For example, from 1997 until 2006, Jones averaged 33.7 HR’s a season. In 2005 and 2006, he managed to hit 51 and 41 HR’s respectively. In 2007, he dropped to 27 HR’s. Now, he is signing a minor league deal worth $500,000. Jones never hit for average, but I do not recall a debilitating injury (Jones did not go on the disabled list in his career until 2008) or anything else that would have slowed his career.

Look, more likely than not, Jones is just a victim of a downward career spiral. He put on weight and might not have had the discipline to maintain his status as an elite player. He never got a huge payday, ala, Adrian Beltre. (I mention Adrian Beltre not because he took steroids but because he had a curiously productive career year which coincided

I would be smiling too if I robbed a Major League Baseball Team

I would be smiling too if I robbed a Major League Baseball Team

with his free agency year. Beltre has not come close to duplicating those numbers.) It is worth noting that Adrian Beltre had his huge season, .334 AVG and 48 HR’s in 2004. Jones’ best seasons came in 2005 and 2006. Despite being poised to receive a huge payday in free agency, Jones fizzled. One has to wonder why this occurred.

It is a shame because Jones could have been the Griffey Junior of his era. Now he is hoping for at-bats on the White Sox.

I know the steroid angle is played out and that no one cares anymore because most people assume all baseball players are guilty of something. However, any player whose career was productive and who has a rapid decline is under suspicion. Plus, it should be noted, Jones is only 32, which means his career derailed in his late 20′s. A little early for a guy who was pretty consistent over a 10 year span to suddenly lose the ability to hit a baseball, especially when he was never injured.

J.D. Martin will make his first major league start on Monday against the Mets and is 8-3 with a 2.66 ERA a AAA Syracuse this year.

Rain, Rain Didn't go away!

Rain, Rain Didn't go away!

The Marlins WERE leading the Phillies 2-0 going to the bottom of the second inning last night in South Florida.  The box scores will never show that now, as the game was postponed and rescheduled as part of a doubleheader in September.  They will hope to finish up what is now a three game set this afternoon in Florida with both teams needing to reshuffle pitching staffs because of the short outtings for starters.  Check out Phillies Phandom and Fish Guts for more info about both teams.

Johan to the rescue

Johan to the rescue

The Mets were in dire need of a win, and they sent ace Johan Santana to the mound yesterday afternoon in Atlanta.  Santana(11-7) delivered with seven shutout innings while allowing only five hits, a couple of walks and five strikeouts.  Through five innings it looked as though the Mets would waste another great start, but they finally broke through in the sixth.  A Bases loaded walk and a fielders choice gave them a 2-0 lead and they never looked back.  The team added three runs in the ninth inning on a Pagan triple, a squeeze play by Castillo and an RBI by Atlanta native Jeff Francoeur.  This was the first win the Mets had since the all-star break and since the game in Miami was rained out, they for once did not lose ground.  Check The Real Dirty Mets blog for more info on this game and all others.

The Braves starter Kenshin Kawakami(5-7) pitched well over 6.2 innings, but those two runs doomed him into the loss for the Braves.  Chipper Jones hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, and the Braves did load the bases, but the Mets were able to get out of the inning and there were no other threats. Go to The Braves Baseball Blog for more Braves content.

The four game set concludes on ESPN at 6pm tonight.

Zimmermann can't hold the lead

Zimmermann can't hold the lead

Last night in Washington Nationals took an early 4-0 lead over the Cubs, getting two runs in both the first and second innings.  The Nats couldn’t add on to that lead, and starter Jordan Zimmermann(3-5) couldn’t hold the Cubbies from coming back.  The Cubs got five runs in 5.1 innings against the young starter and the Nats only added one run late in the game.  Third basemen Ryan Zimmerman(no relation) hit a sac fly in the eighth to get them within one run, but no more and the Nats are now in danger of being swept today.  Check out Centerfieldgate for more information about the Nationals.

The Cubs starter Randy Wells(5-4) got through five innings and gutted it out after a bad start to get the win.  A Ryan Theriot triple scored two and former National Alfonso Soriano hit a three run homer in the sixth to give the Cubs the lead for good.  Kevin Gregg got a five out save for his 18th of the year.

Phillies Injury News: Pedro to DL

Pedro Martinez has been placed on the 15 day DL by the Philadelphia Phillies with a mild shoulder strain.

This is weird, as he literally just signed, I would think they could have just had him making rehab starts, but according to the ESPN article, they haven’t decided when or where those starts will take place, so maybe there is an actual injury.  Makes this signing kinda odd.

Bastardo to 15 day DL

Bastardo to 15 day DL

The National League East’s injury problems continued yesterday as the Philadelphia Phillies made a move many were expecting by sending rookie LHP Antonio Bastardo to the disabled list according to ESPN.  He will be retroactived until his last start on Thursday and this trip to the DL is because of a strained shoulder suffered during that outting against the Rays.  For the time being Sergio Escalona is back with the big league club, but speculation by many, including here at NLEC is that one of AAA prospects Carrasco or Carpenter will be called up for Bastardo’s start on Thursday.  You have to wonder if depending how the prospects do in his absence if this intensifies efforts for a trade, stayed tuned to NLEC for more.

Martis to AAA

Martis to AAA

To make room for Scott Olsen to return from the disabled list, the Nationals have sent Shairon Martis to Syracuse according to Federal Baseball as well as ESPN and MASN.  Martis had won his first five decisions before recently losing three decisions in a row.

Scott Olsen will be activated before the series with the Marlins this week.
