Phillies vs. Mets

R.A. Dickey and Cole Hamels locked up in a pitchers’ duel Friday night at Citi Field.  Both pitchers went the distance, but the night belonged to Dickey as the Mets defeated the Phillies 1-0.

mets-813Dickey’s knuckleball baffled the Phillies hitters all night long, and as he cruised through five hitless innings, Mets fans wondered if this might be the first no-hitter in franchise history.   But it was the opposing pitcher that spoiled that bid as Hamels hit a clean single to right field with one out in the sixth inning.   Meanwhile, Hamels kept the Mets off balance and off of the scoreboard.  It looked like the Mets had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when Mike Hessman hit a drive to left field that the umpires called a home run.  However, after a lengthy replay review, the umps ruled fan interference on the play and placed Hessman on third base.   Despite being on third with no outs, the Mets stranded Hessman and let a golden opportunity slip by.

In the sixth, the Mets finally broke through.  With two outs and no one on base, David Wright and Carlos Beltran hit back-to-back doubles to plate the game’s first – and only – run.  Dickey (8-5) didn’t allow a base runner after Hamels’ single, finishing with seven strikeouts in his nine innings.  Hamels (7-9) took the hard-luck loss for the Phils.

Braves vs. Dodgers

Pitching also stole the spotlight in Atlanta on Friday night as the first place Braves defeated the Dodgers by a score of 1-o.

braves-813The Braves’ Tim Hudson and the Dodgers’  Hiroki Kuroda matched zeroes for six innings.  The game’s lone run came in the seventh, when Brooks Conrad, playing third base in place of the injured Chipper Jones, homered to center field off of Kuroda.

Hudson (14-5) allowed just 3 hits over eight innings of work, striking out six.  Kuroda (8-11) took the loss despite allowing just three hits in his seven innings.  Braves’ closer Billy Wagner came on in the ninth and locked down his 29th save of the season.

Nationals vs. Diamondbacks

The Nationals scored early and let their pitching do the rest, as the Nats defeated the Diamondbacks 4-2 in Washington.

Diamondbacks Nationals BaseballThe Nationals scored three runs in the first off of Arizona starter Joe Saunders (1-2), highlighted by a Ryan Zimmerman two-run single.   Wil Nieves extended Washington’s lead to 4-0 with a solo home run in the second.  The D-Backs cut the Nats lead in half with two fifth inning runs off of starter John Lannan, but managed just one hit after that.  Lannan (4-5) allowed just four hits over seven innings, striking out five.  Sean Burnett pitched two perfect innings, striking out four, to pick up his second save on the season.

Marlins vs. Reds

The Reds roughed up Marlins’ ace Josh Johnson Friday night as they cruised to a 7-2 victory in Cincinnati.

Marlins Reds baseballThe Reds jumped on Johnson in the first inning, scoring three runs courtesy of RBI singles by Joey Votto, Scott Rolen, and Jay Bruce.  Bruce later homered as the Reds built a 7-0 lead.   The Marlins’ only offense came off of the bat of rookie Mike Stanton, who hit solo home runs in both the sixth and eighth innings.

Edinson Volquez (3-1) scattered eight hits over six innings of work, allowing just one run and striking out six.  Johnson (10-5) lasted just 3.2 innings in the loss, allowing six runs and ten hits.

Game 1

Ibanez with a blast

Ibanez with a blast

The Phillies drew first blood in the double dip in Miami yesterday, as they came on late for a 9-3 win.  Joe Blanton(11-7) went seven shutout innings allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out nine to get the victory.  Ryan Howard had two hits and three RBI to lead the Phillies in the game with a big two run double to put the game away.

Josh Johnson has been struggling of late, and yesterday was no exception.  Johnson(15-5) went five innings allowing seven hits and four runs, but struck out ten batters.  He left down 4-0 but also got little run support during the game in taking this loss.  In the eighth inning, the Marlins socred their only three runs on a Hanley Ramirez RBI double and then a Dan Uggla two RBI single.

In the second game of the double dip, the Marlins got even, with a 3-0 victory.  Anibal Sanchez(3-7) pitched a gem, as he went eight innings of two hit ball and allowed no runs before giving way to Leo Nunez for his 24th save of the season.  Dan Uggla and Cody Ross hit solo home runs and to cap the scoring, Hanley Ramirez had an RBI double in the fifth inning.

Jamie Moyer is usually a Marlin killer, and in this one he pitched well, but not well enough to win.  Moyer(12-10) went seven innings of three run, nine hit ball in taking the loss.  The Phillies as a team only had four baserunners, so the bats were pretty silent in this one.

Check out FishGuts for more on the Marlins aspect in this doubleheader and Phillies Phandom for the Phillies.

Why is Chipper front and center when playing the Mets?

Why is Chipper front and center when playing the Mets?

The Atlanta Braves continued steamrolling the lowly Mets last night, with a 3-1 victory in New York.  Jair Jurrjens(13-10) won again versus the Mets as he went seven innings and allowed just five hits and a single run in this one.  The Braves actually were down 1-0 before Yunel Escobar singled home Martin Prado and Chipper Jones in the second inning.  That 2-1 score stood until the ninth when Adam LaRoche singled home Yunel Escobar with an insurance run.  Rafael Soriano worked the ninth allowing one walk around striking out the side to get his 25th save of the year.  The Braves Baseball Blog has more info on this win.

The Mets, what more can you say about them and how many times have I wrote that?  Nelson Figueroa(2-7) actually turned in a quality start as he went seven innings of two hit, three walk and two run ball, but had no run support behind him.  Luis Castillo had an RBI single scoring Anderson Hernandez in the third, but that would be it for the Metsies, check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more on them.

Kuroda shuts down the Nats

Kuroda shuts down the Nats

The Los Angeles Dodgers came in and beat down on the worst NL team, the Nats last night 14-2.  Rafael Furcal had a pair of two RBI singles to lead the way for the Dodgers and former Nat, Ronnie Belliard added two hits, two runs and an RBI during the rout.  Hiroki Kuroda(8-6) went six innings allowing just four hits and two runs to get the win in this one, leaving at only 81 pitches.

Livan Hernandez had his worst start as a National this year.  Hernandez(8-12) went 3.2 innings and allowed eight hits, eight runs and four walks to put the Nats in a big early hole.  The lone Nats runs were scored on a two run homer by Adam Dunn scoring Ryan Zimmerman in the third inning, which temporarily had them in a lead before Hernandez’s imposion.  Check out Centerfield Gate for more on the Nats.

Marlins Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(61-45, 1st in NL East) had a rough weekend as they lost three of four to the Giants, but then rebounded well to take the series from the Rockies. The series did not start out promising as they lost the opener, but lefties J.A. Happ and the newest Philly Cliff Lee hammered down the final two games. They will now look to put some more distance between themselves and the second place Marlins who are reeling. Check out Phillies Phandom for more Philadelphia insight.

The Florida Marlins(55-53, 2nd in NL East 7GB, 5GB in WildCard) came out of the weekend winning two of three in exciting games against the Cubs with confidence. In their sight was the last place Washington Nationals team and they were likely riding high. Apparently they were running too high as they dropped all three games of them, and all were winnable. The Nationals came back in two of the games from deficits and used the home run ball as a huge weapon. The Nationals won’t get any relief from the long ball with the powerful lineup the Phillies bring and being in Citizens Bank Park, but they hope for better results than earlier in the week. FishGuts has all the info on this series and more.

Make sure to check out Chatter Up! Featuring Phillies Phandom and FishGuts.

The Atlanta Braves(55-53, 3rd in NL East 6.5GB, 5GB of Wild Card) must have the schedule makers. Just after a rough stretch last week of losing two of three to rival Marlins and then two out of three to the National League leading Dodgers, they finally got to face the Padres. They took two out of three from the Padres, but next, they go up the interstate to play the Dodgers again, but this time for four and on the road. They have a couple days off on the horizon next week, but first they must manage through a grueling set in ending this road trip. The Braves Baseball Blog will have more information on the Braves for you.

The Los Angeles Dodgers(66-42, 1st in NL West) have hit a fairly unexpected rough road on their trip to a division title. Last week they went on a four game losing streak before winning three of four against the Cardinals and Braves to end their week. This week, they welcomed in Milwaukee, and except for a 17-4 victory on Tuesday night, they couldn’t get a “W” next to them. After seeing their division lead slip to 6 games with the hot play of the Giants and Rockies, they look to get back on track against the Braves.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Thursday @ 10:10PM EST – Dodgers 5 Braves 4
Friday@10:10PM EST-Jurrjens,ATL(9-8,2.85 ERA) vs. Billingsley,LAD(11-6,3.82 ERA)
Saturday @ 10:10PM EST – Kawakami,ATL(5-9,4.38 ERA) vs. Kershaw,LAD(8-6,2.89 ERA)
Sunday @ 4:10PM EST – Vazquez,ATL(9-7,2.99 ERA) vs. Kuroda,LAD(4-5,4.44 ERA)
Mets Logo vs_120x120 Padres Logo
The New York Mets(51-56, 4th in NL East 10GB) are extremely up and down, but at this point, you have to believe they are just playing out the string and praying for no more injuries. After losing three out of four to the Diamondbacks this weekend, they welcomed in the Cardinals for two games. They lost the first game late on a blown save by KRod and came back incredibly strong with a 9-0 mashing of the Cards on Wednesday afternoon. They hope that a west coast trip is just what the doctor ordered to at least get back to .500. They start with four games in San Diego followed by a place they love to play, Arizona. Check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more information throughout the series.

The San Diego Padres(44-65, 5th in NL West 22.5GB) followed up a five game winning streak towards the end of last week by losing three out of four. They are currently on a 2 game skid and will continue to send their young and rebuilding team out there to see what they can do. It does seem that they are getting different heroes daily and a Pads fan has to hope for the future.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Thursday @ 10:05PM EST – Padres 8 Mets 3
Friday @ 10:05PM EST – Perez,NYM(2-3,7.03 ERA) vs. Correia,SD(7-9,4.73 ERA)
Saturday @ 10:05PM EST – Parnell,NYM(2-3,3.74 ERA) vs. Latos,SD(3-1,2.66 ERA)
Sunday @ 4:05PM EST-Santana,NYM(12-8,3.10 ERA) vs. Stauffer,SD(1-3,3.12 ERA)
Cardinals Logo vs_120x120 Nats Logo
The Washington Nationals(37-72, 5th in NL East 25.5GB) are now winners of five straight and have now had streaks of four and five games in the past two weeks.  They also surprised many this week by sweeping the Florida Marlins right out of town and doing it impressively.  They will hope to continue their recent success as the Arizona Diamondbacks come in for three before heading out on a road trip.  Check out CenterfieldGate for more news, information and insight on the Nats.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(50-59, 4th in NL West 17GB) are on their own impressive streak right now as well.  After losing the first two to the Phillies last week, the Diamondbacks have won five straight and seven of eight against the Phillies, Mets and Pirates heading into tonight’s matchup.  Most of those opponents have been subpar, but it must be encouraging for this young Diamondbacks team as they play out the string.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST -Garland,ARI(6-10,4.26 ERA) vs. Balester,WAS(1-1,3.68 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Haren,ARI(11-6,2.38 ERA) vs. Mock,WAS(0-4,6.75 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – Petit,ARI(2-5,5.81 ERA) vs. Martin,WAS(0-2,7.16 ERA)

Padres LogoCardinals Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(53-39, 1st in NL East) are now winners of nine of their last ten games and fourteen of sixteen since getting swept by the Braves a few weeks ago.  With that run and the mediocre play of the rest of the division, they have opened up a 5.5 game lead on the Atlanta Braves.  They get to face two struggling teams this weekend with the Padres playing a make up game from the second week of the season and the Cardinals coming in after that.   Check out Phillies Phandom for more Philadelphia insight.

Check out the Nationals series below for a brief on the Padres.

The St. Louis Cardinals(51-46, 1st in NL Central) are barely holding onto their lead in the National League Central.  The Cardinals were swept out of Houston this week by an Astros team which finds itself only one game back, and the Cardinals now have a slim lead of one game over both the Cubs and Cardinals.  They will hope to extend the lead this weekend and try to slow down the train that is the Phillies.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Thursday @ 7:05PM EST – Correia,SD(6-7,4.34 ERA) vs. Hamels,PHI(5-5,4.72 ERA)
Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Pineiro,STL(8-9,3.09 ERA) vs. Happ,PHI(7-0,2.68 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:05PM EST – Lohse,STL(4-6,4.21 ERA) vs. Lopez,PHI(2-0,2.60 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – Wellemeyer,STL(7-8,5.68 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(6-4,4.24 ERA)
Braves Logo
VS
mil_120x120
The Atlanta Braves(49-47, 2nd in NL East 6GB) are fresh off winning two straight four game series against the Mets and Giants.  Their offense was front and center in most of the games, as they won six and only lost two of those games.  This run has put them in a tie for second place in the division with the Florida Marlins and they are now only 3.5 games back of the National League wild card.  The team travels for the first time since the all-star break to Milwaukee for three games against another wildcard contender. Check out The Braves Baseball blog for more insight.

The Milwaukee Brewers(48-47, 4th in NL Central 2GB) are another team with an up and down season.  Currently they are only two games back of the division lead and four back of the wildcard lead.  They are in the thick of things and they continue to have good offensive production from all-stars Braun and Fielder.  They welcome in a hot Braves team in hopes that other NL East teams can help them move up the divisional and wildcard standings over the weekend.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Friday @ 8:05PM EST – Vazquez,ATL(7-7,2.86 ERA) vs. Parra,MIL(4-8,6.37 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST-Hanson,ATL(5-0,3.00 ERA) vs. Gallardo,MIL(8-7,3.28 ERA)
Sunday @ 2:05PM EST – Lowe,ATL(9-7,4.26 ERA) vs. Burns,MIL(2-3,6.21 ERA)
Marlins Logo vs_120x120 Dodgers Logo
The Florida Marlins(49-47, 2nd in NL East 6GB) recovered from an embarrassing sweep by the Phillies at home this past weekend.  They traveled to San Diego and swept the lowly Padres, mainly with great pitching, and small ball or timely hitting.  They are now within three games of the wild card leading St. Louis Cardinals and beyond that have an uphill battle for the division lead.  The Marlins travel up the west coast to Los Angeles where possibly the best team in the National League, and top teams in baseball awaits them.  Check out FishGuts for more Marlins insight and info.

The Los Angeles Dodgers(61-34, 1st in NL West) are off a series sweep of the Cincinnati Reds this week, and add that to the wins over the weekend, and they have put together a quiet five game winning streak.  Manny Ramirez came off the bench last night to provide the heroics for the Dodgers and proving why the Dodgers needed him back on the active roster so badly.  The Dodgers own the largest division lead in baseball and already can begin cruising to the playoffs.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Friday @ 10:10PM EST – Johnson,FLA(8-2,2.74 ERA) vs. Kershaw,LAD(8-5,2.95 ERA)
Saturday @ 10:10PM EST – VandenHurk,FLA(1-0,3.00 ERA) vs. Kuroda,LAD(3-5,4.73 ERA)
Sunday @ 4:10PM EST – Volstad,FLA(7-9,4.34 ERA) vs. Schmidt,LAD(1-0,5.40 ERA)
Mets Logo vs_120x120 Astros Logo
The New York Mets(44-50, 4th in NL East 10GB) are in complete free fall.  They lost two in a row and the series to the Nationals this week, after losing three of four to the Braves over the weekend and are now a season high, six games under .500.  They are seven full games behind the wildcard as well, and all signs point to packing it in until next year.  They draw a hot Astros team this weekend and as I feel i’m always writing, no relief appears in site for all the injuries.  All signs point to either Nelson Figueroa or Jon Niese getting the start on Saturday night as well in place of Fernando Nieve. Check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more Mets news.

The Houston Astros(49-46, tied for 2nd in NL Central 1GB) are 5-2 since the all-star break and have climbed within one game of first place in the NL Central.  Their fans and players hope they can pull off another great late season come back as it seems they always do.  They hope to continue their heroic ways when they face the hobbled and beaten down New York Mets team at MinuteMaid Park this weekend.

The Washington Nationals(28-66, 5th in NL East 26GB) are flying high after taking the series this week against divisional rival New York Mets.  The wins were Jim Riggleman’s first as Nats manager and his first series win and winning streak.  They will hope they can continue their new found success tonight against the second owrst team in the majors, the San Diego Padres and then over the weekend against the Cardinals.  Colin Balester will make his first start of the year in place of injured Jordan Zimmermann tonight.  Check out CenterfieldGate for more news, information and insight on the Nats.

Check out the Phillies preview at the top of the page for information on the Cardinals.

The San Diego Padres(37-58, 5th in NL West 24GB) are fresh off getting swept by the Florida Marlins at Petco Park.  They have lost six of seven games since the All-Star break and are further falling into the basement of the National League West division.  Thursday they have an even tougher matchup where they face the Phillies ace Cole Hamels in a makeup game.  After this though, they will go to Washington for a three game set for the worst team in the Majors, so they could go on a small role.
