Phillies Logo VS Braves Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(64-48, 1st in NL East) may have finally figured out their troubles since the trade deadline this week.  This week, after being swept by the Marlins, the offense may have finally come back to life during a three game set in Chicago.  Cliff Lee has been outstanding as he has three wins in as many games and even Ben Francisco was the hero for a night on Monday.  They will look to put some space between themselves and the third place Braves and do better against a division rival than they did last weekend.  Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Atlanta Braves(60-54, 3rd in NL East 5GB, 3.5GB of wildcard) have won five straight and seven out of eight games.  It started last week with a west coast swing where they took two of three from the lowly Padres and then were able to take three out of four from the Dodgers and gain ground in the playoffs races.  This week they swept the Nats in a two game set and will hope to stay close in both playoff races.  Martin Prado and Yunel Escobar are still on fire for the Braves and they hope Nate McClouth will be back soon as he has been day to day. The Braves Baseball Blog has more info on the series and the game.

Be sure to check back for the Chatter Up! Between these two blogs today.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Blanton,PHI(7-6,4.02 ERA) vs. Jurrjens,ATL(9-8,3.01 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:00PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-7,4.77 ERA) vs. Kawakami,ATL(5-9,4.12 ERA)
Sunday @ 8:00PM EST – Happ,PHI(8-2,2.75 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-7,2.90 ERA)
Rockies Logo VS Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlins(61-54, 2nd in NL East 4.5GB, 3GB of wildcard) seemed to get a wakeup call last week when they were swept by the Nationals.  Since that time, they are 6-1 including a series sweep last weekend of the division leading Phillies.  They took three of four from the Astros this week and head into a VERY important series.  They welcome in the wildcard leading Colorado Rockies for three games and could potentially leave town being tied for the wildcard if they can pull off a sweep.  They will send Josh Johnson to the mound in the opener, so that is working for them.  FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Colorado Rockies(64-51 2nd in NL West 5GB, 1st in NL Wildcard) have been on fire since the All-Star break except for a rough patch against the Phillies a week ago.  This week they came off a three of four from the Cubs and finished with two of three at home against the Pirates with three large wins.  The Rox are currently leading the wildcard, but they do have teams hot on their tail, including the Giants at only 1.5 gmaes back, the Marlins as mentioned above and the Braves only 3.5 games back.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Hammel,COL(7-6,4.66 ERA) vs. Johnson,FLA(11-2,2.92 ERA)
Saturday @ 6:10PM EST – Cook,COL(10-4,3.93 ERA) vs. VandenHurk,FLA(2-1,4.15 ERA)
Sunday @ 5:05PM EST – De La Rosa,COL(10-8,4.78 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(8-9,4.71 ERA)
Giants Logo VS Mets Logo
The New York Mets(61-54, 4th in NL East 12GB) have a lot of red L’s on the schedule for the past few weeks.  The talks of the team not shaving until they made it to .500 are long gone as over the past 13 games are only 4-9 and the schedule has not been that difficult.  They have lost those games to the Diamondbacks and Padres mainly with a couple against the Central division leading Cardinals for two.  the injuries don’t appear to end for the Mets, and this week they found out Delgado may also be done for the year.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog is your place to go for more information on the Mets.
The San Francisco Giants(62-52, 3rd in NL West 6.5GB, 2nd in Wildcard 1.5GB) have hit rough times in the past week and with that, fell out of the wildcard lead.  The Giants lose two of three to the Reds last weekend and then followed that up with a series loss to the Dodgers, but did take the final game on their way to New York.  They will hope their pitching continues to impress in this series and going forward as they do extend after this four game set to Cincinnati and finally on to the Rockies next weekend.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Zito,SF(8-10,4.40 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(2-4,3.94 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:10PM EST – Cain,SF(12-4,2.44 ERA) vs. Santana,NYM(13-8,3.00 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Sanchez,SF(5-10,4.61 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-8,4.88 ERA)
Monday @ 7:10PM EST – Martinez,SF(2-1,6.00 ERA) vs. Hernandez,NYM(7-7,5.28 ERA)
Nationals Logo VS Reds Logo
The Washington Nationals(40-74, 5th in NL East 24.5GB) followed up their eight game winning streak by losing two games in a row by a combined 14-3 score. Whatever had gotten into their bats definitely made its way right back out during this past two game set against the Braves. They will now travel for Cincinnati to begin a four game set against the Reds and hope their hitting and pitching can go back to last week’s levels. In The Great American Ballpark, they certainly have a good chance of getting some hits, but the pitching could still struggle. CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats, be sure to check them out.

The Cincinnati Reds(49-64, 5th in NL Central 13.5GB) are one of many teams who have already wrote off the season and you may even see more trades from. Oddly, they did make a few trades at the deadline, but unless they go on an insane winning streak, they will not sniff the playoffs. They will send a pitcher to the mound in this series that has been the subject of trade talks for a while, Bronson Arroyo and likely their closer Francisco Cordero will be seen too, who also has been in rumors.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Thursday @ 7:10PM EST – Reds 7 Nationals 0
Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Mock,WAS(1-4,6.14 ERA) vs. Harang,CIN(6-13,4.43 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Martin,WAS(1-2,5.91 ERA) vs. Cueto,CIN(8-9,4.23 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-9,3.58 ERA) vs. Lehr,CIN(2-0,1.80 ERA)

Walk off single

Ryan Howard’s tying homer in the ninth helped the Phillies complete a memorable comeback. Paul Bako’s single gave Philadelphia an 8-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night, giving them wins in eight of their past nine games. The Phillies trailed 7-3 before pinch-hitter Matt Stairs led off the ninth with a homer off Matt Capps (1-5). Jimmy Rollins walked and stole second, his third steal of the game, and Chase Utley followed with a one-out single to left. Howard followed Utley by blasting a 1-0 pitch to tie the game at 7. Raul Ibanez, playing in his first game after missing 20 with a groin injury, then hit a ground-rule double to center. After an intentional walk to Jayson Werth and an infield single by Pedro Feliz, Bako lined a 2-2 pitch to left, sending a crowd that included Vice President Joe Biden home happy. Tyler Walker(1-0) pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Cole Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP, lasted six innings while allowing five runs on seven hits—all extra-base hits. The left-hander has allowed at least seven hits in six of his last seven starts and is 1-3 in that stretch. Pittsburgh starter Ross Ohlendorf held the Phillies to five hits while allowing three runs and striking out five. The right-hander matched his career high with four walks.

With one day to go until the All-Star break, the second-place Marlins fell four games behind Philadelphia in the NL East. Florida opens the second half of the season with a four-game series against the Phillies in Miami. Although he has pitched well lately, Garland (5-8) had gone nine starts without a victory and won for the first time since May 19—also against Florida. The Diamondbacks entered 8-16 against left-handed starters but jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first against Sean West (3-4). All-Star Justin Upton matched a career high with four hits, Jon Garland allowed one run in eight innings and the Diamondbacks beat the Florida Marlins 5-1 on Saturday night.

Closing out

Closing out

Jurrjens pitched six strong innings and singled twice for his first career multihit game to drive in a run and score another, leading the Atlanta Braves past the Colorado Rockies 4-3 on Saturday night. Jurrjens (7-7) won for just the second time in his last eight starts. He had taken five losses in that span, including four in which he received two or fewer runs in offensive support. Rafael Soriano, the last of five Braves pitchers, allowed a bloop single to Seth Smith to start the ninth inning but then struck out the side for his 12th save in 13 opportunities. Colorado starter Jason Marquis (11-6) went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits but was denied in his bid for a major league-leading 12th win.

Loaded French Fries the Reds

Loaded French Fries the Reds

Francoeur had a two-run single in his Mets debut and Johan Santana pitched seven sharp innings, leading New York to a 4-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. Santana (10-7) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one, taking advantage of some rare run support. New York scored seven runs in the left-hander’s previous five starts. While the Mets were all smiles, the Reds had a rough night. Johnny Cueto (8-6) turned in another shaky start, and right fielder Jay Bruce broke his right wrist trying to make a sliding catch. Cueto gave up four runs and nine hits over five innings, dropping to 2-3 with a 7.31 ERA in his last six starts. It was the right-hander’s first game since he allowed a career-high nine runs while recording just two outs in a 22-1 loss at Philadelphia. Bruce went down when he rushed in trying to grab David Wright’s blooper in the first inning. He got his glove on the ball, but it came out as his wrist folded back awkwardly.

Home Plate saw alot of action

Home Plate saw alot of action

Stammen (2-4) gave up nine hits in his first complete game and Washington’s fourth this season. He threw only 107 pitches, taking more chances with Houston’s hitters because of the lopsided score. Houston starter Mike Hampton (5-6) gave up nine hits in 3 2-3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He pored over a video replay of his performance and didn’t think he pitched that poorly. Nick Johnson, Josh Willingham and Dunn homered in consecutive at-bats and the Nationals set season highs for hits and runs. Washington had three straight shots for the first time since the franchise relocated from Montreal in 2005 and the 21 hits were the most since the move.

Pirates Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(45-38, 1st in NL East) took three out of four from the Reds this week.  They decided after playing one game that could have had the mercy rule to play some real baseball though in their other two wins.  They were also able to extend their lead in the division with the faltering play of the other teams.  Check out Phillies Phandom for more Philadelphia insight.

The Pirates(38-47, 6th in NL Central 8GB) come into this weekend losers of five of their last seven.  They will hope to put up a fight against a hot Philly team and to stay close enough to make a move in their own division.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Duke,PIT(8-7,3.28 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(5-4,4.69 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Ohlendorf,PIT(7-7,4.63 ERA) vs. Hamels,PHI(5-5,4.70 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST -Vasquez,PIT(1-2,4.50 ERA) vs. Happ,PHI(5-0,3.04 ERA)

The Florida Marlins(44-42, 2nd in NL East 2GB) really need All-Star shortstop and slugger Hanley Ramirez to get healthy quick.  They did take the final game of a three game set in San Francisco, but their offense is much different with him out of the lineup.  The Marlins are still only two games back of the Phillies for first place, but they will need to find ways to win without Hanley to keep pace.  They head to Arizona this weekend in hopes of getting closer to first place.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(36-49, 4th in NL West 17.5GB) are hot right now, winners of five straight games, including a sweep of the Padres this week.  They will look to stay hot, but are currently thirteen games under .500 and 10.5 games back of even the wild card in the National League.  At this point, you need to wonder if they are already out of it?

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Thursday @ 9:40PM EST – Miller,FLA(3-4,4.42 ERA) vs. Petit,ARI(0-3,8.46 ERA)
Friday @ 9:40PM EST – Nolasco,FLA(6-6,5.42 ERA) vs. Haren,ARI(8-5,2.16 ERA)
Saturday @ 8:10PM EST – West,FLA(3-3,4.47 ERA) vs. Garland,ARI(4-8,4.80 ERA)
Sunday @ 4:10PM EST – Johnson,FLA(7-2,2.82 ERA) vs. Davis,ARI(4-8,3.13 ERA)
Braves Logo vs_120x120 Rockies Logo
The Braves(41-43, third in NL East 4GB) were able to rebound from a letdown weekend in Washington where they lost two out of three games after pulling within two of first place.  They won the final two games in Chicago against the Cubs to put them alone in third place for the time being and only be four games back of Philly and two under .500 for the season.  They will hope to rely on their starting pitching and solid bullpen this weekend in the hitters park that is Coors Field.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more information on the Bravos.

Colorado(45-39, third in NL West 8GB) improved to six games above .500 and continued their hot play since the manager change this week.  They were able to sweep the Washington Nationals using different game plans this week.  One game was won via great pitching, another via bad defense for the Nats and one with clutch hitting.  They hope to march toward the wildcard lead this weekend against the Braves.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Thursday @ 8:40PM EST – Hanson,ATL(4-0,2.25 ERA) vs. Cook,COL(8-3,3.76 ERA)
Friday @ 8:40PM EST – Lowe,ATL(7-7,4.56 ERA) vs. Jimenez,COL(6-8,3.86 ERA)
Saturday@8:10PM EST-Jurrjens,ATL(6-7,2.91 ERA) vs. Marquis,COL(11-5,3.61 ERA)
Sunday @ EST – Vazquez,ATL(6-7,2.95 ERA) vs. Hammel,COL(5-4,4.07 ERA)
Reds Logo VS Mets Logo
The New York Mets(40-44, 4th in NL East 5.5GB) mercifully took one out of three from the Dodgers this week at home in Citi Field. Its quite obvious that the injuries have taken a toll on this team and the team and fans are likely not sure what to do next.  They hope to stay close going into the much needed All-Star break, but check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more Mets articles.

The Reds(41-43, 5th in NL Central 4.5GB) as mentioned above have just lost three of four to the Phillies.  They also are in a similar position as the Mets, sans the injuries in that they are hoping even with a mediocre first half, to close strong and have a play for the division.

Probable pitching matchups below:

The Washington Nationals(24-58, 5th in NL East 20GB)  continue to give their fans little bits of hope and then dash them away a few days later.  Over the weekend, they cooled off the Atlanta Braves by taking two out of three games and had some high hopes going to Colorado.  Once they got to Colorado, the Rockies swept them right out of town, and the Nats defense was also on display, but not in a good way.  They hope that a matchup with the Houston Astros will heal some of their wounds.  Check out CenterfieldGate for more information during the series between the teams.

The Astros(41-42, 5th in NL Central 3.5GB) are 6-4 in their last ten and currently sit only 3.5 games back in the competitive National League Central.  They are fresh off a series in against Pittsburgh and have won three out of four games.

This series features the completion of a suspended game from May prior to the game Thursday.  That game was suspended in the 12th inning in Washington and since Houston would not be returning to Washington, they will play it in Houston, with the Nationals being the home team until that finishes.

Probable pitching matchups are listed below:

Thursday @ 8:05PM EST – Lannan,WAS(6-5,3.45 ERA) vs. Ortiz,HOU(3-4,4.11 ERA)
Friday @ 8:05PM EST – Olsen,WAS(2-4,6.04 ERA) vs. Oswalt,HOU(5-4,3.81 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Stammen,WAS(1-4,4.88 ERA) vs. Hampton,HOU(5-5,4.16 ERA)
Sunday @ 2:05PM EST- Zimmermann,WAS(3-3,4.52 ERA) vs. Moehler,HOU(5-5,5.52 ERA)

Utley rounds the bases after a three run shot

Utley rounds the bases after a three run shot

Philly fans were able to relax very early last night, as the Phillies put up a 10 spot in the first inning against the Reds last night in Philly.  In the first inning alone, Victorino and Rollins scored two runs and Victorino, Dobbs and Utley hit home runs.  Johnny Cueto(8-5) only lasted two outs in the first and was charged with nine runs on five hits and three walks.  The Phillies still managed to add on more runs, as they won the game 22-1.  Cole Hamels(5-5) was able to cruise through seven innings only giving up three hits, including a home run and even added two hits and an RBI of his own.  The two teams meet up again tonight in Philadelphia, Cincinnati will hope to put up any fight.

Sandoval says "vote for me!"

Sandoval says "vote for me!"

Pablo Sandoval made a loud audition to get votes in the MLB Final NL All-Star vote when he put the Giants ahead in the fifth inning with a grand slam on way to a 5-4 victory.  Marlins pitcher Sean West(3-3) got through six innings and the main blemish he had was the grand slam, as he gave up a total of five runs in taking the loss.  Matt Cain(10-2) worked into the seventh and picked up his tenth victory of the season after being named an NL All-Star on Sunday.  Not to be outdone, Brian Wilson earned his 22nd save of the season but not before allowing two runs on three hits and a walk to allow the game to be closer than it was.  The Marlins continue the west coast trip tonight after falling two games behind the Phillies in the East.

Lee stays hot

Derek Lee continued to play great baseball going two for four with a two run home run in the first inning for the Cubs.  They added all four runs in the first two innings and that would be all they needed.  Randy Wells(4-3) worked six innings giving up seven hits and two runs, including a home run to McLouth in getting his fourth victory this year.  Sean Marshall and Carlos Marmol got holds as Kevin Gregg got his 15th save this season during a 4-2 Cubs victory.  Jair Jurrjens(6-7) went six innings but gave up those four runs in the first two innings in getting the loss for the Braves.  The series will continue in Chicago tonight.

Pitching this well in Colorado?

Pitching this well in Colorado?

Oddly enough, Jason Marquis is having a wonderful season in what is known as a great hitters ballpark in Colorado.  Marquis(11-5) got his league leading 11th victory as he worked eight innings and giving up zero earned runs during a 1-0 Colorado victory.  Colorado got their first and only needed run in the first as Todd Helton doubled in Clint Barmes in the opening inning.  Craig Stammen(1-4) took a tough loss for the Nats as he went seven innings and giving up only five hits, but that double gave him the loss.  Huston Street worked a perfect ninth inning earning his 20th save of the year for the Rockies.  The Nats look to rebound tonight again in Colorado.
