Mets vs. Nationals

The Nationals beat the The Mets in a score of 2-1. The Mets scored a run in the 1st when Ike Davis singled home Jesus Feliciano.  The Nationals tied it up in the 7th when Nyjer Morgan singled home Ian Desmond.  In the 9th the Nationals scored the go ahead run when Ryan Zimmerman hit a sac fly to bring home Willy Harris.

Johan Santana pitched 7 innings giving up 6 hits, 1 run, and 7 strikeouts.  Livan Hernandez pitched 7 innings giving up 7 hits, 1 run, and 7 strikeouts.   Matt Capps got the win pitching 1 inning giving up 1 hit with 1 strikeout.  The loss went to Pedro Feliciano who pitched 1 inning giving up 2 hits, 1 run, with no strikeouts.

The Pirates beat the Phillies in a score of 3-2. The Pirates struck first when they scored in the 2nd when Bobby Crosby singled home Lastings Milledge.  The Phillies then added a run in the 3rd when Wilson Valdez hit a solo shot.  The Pirates tacked on another run in the 3rd when Pedro Alvarez doubled home Jose Tabata and they added another run in the 4th when Jose Tabata singled home Andy LaRoche.  In the 5th the Phillies added a run when Shane Victorino scored thanks to a fielding error off of a Greg Dobbs hit.

Daniel McCutchen got the win and pitched 5.1 innings giving up 6 hits, 2 runs, and 4 strikeouts.  Cole Hamels took the loss and pitched 7 innings giving up 5 hits, 3 runs, and 8 strikeouts.  Octavio Dotel pitched 1 inning giving up 1 hit with 1 strikeout.

The Braves and Marlins were off.

Marlins Logo chatterup Nats Logo
Welcome to the second edition of Chatter Up! here at NLEC. This week will match up Wally Londo of FishGuts for his second appearance in a week, as his Marlins travel to Washington to take on the Nationals. For our Nationals blog, CenterfieldGate, we have Mark P. representing for this segment. Enjoy!
Matt R(NLEC):(via MrNorthJersey) Does it bother FishGuts that they(The Marlins) don’t seem to be taken seriously even though they have won 2 World Series?
Wally(FG): Well, it comes with the territory. Do people take Arizona seriously? Colorado? The Rays before last year when they became giant killers?
You have to take time to develop a fan base and a tradition, and with the constantly overturned rosters, it’s hard. Casual fans see the Marlins as a joke, but people who know what the front office is doing and what they have to deal with have a great respect for the team.
You have to be competitive, have a loyal and large fanbase, and be stable to be taken seriously, and they’ve already got the first down. The new stadium should take care of the rest before long.
Matt R(NLEC): Are you happy with the acquisition of Nick Johnson at the deadline?
Wally(FG): Ecstatic. Emilio Bonifacio was 2nd to last amongst qualified players in OPS at the time of the trade, and we’ve essentially replaced him with a .200 point increase without losing anything in defense. I’m not surprised more noise wasn’t made about it, but this was one of the hugest net upgrades any team made at the deadline.
Matt R(NLEC): What areas do you wish they would have improved upon at the deadline?
Wally(FG): For all of the talk about the Marlins looking to upgrade their bullpen, the guys in the pen have been lights out over the course of the season, so I haven’t been worried about that.
For me, getting another reliable 5th starter was the biggest thing we could’ve done after replacing Bonifacio, and I can’t help but thing a post waiver move is in the works. We don’t need a 5th starter for a few days, so I won’t be surprised if Carl Pavano is a guy the Marlins look to add soon.
Matt R(NLEC): Who is the closer for the Marlins?  I know Lindstrom just came back and Nunez took the loss Saturday night, but Nunez has been very solid in replacement of Lindstrom.  What should they do from here?
Wally(FG): Leo Nunez is the closer now, but they seem hell bent on getting Lindstrom back in there. I don’t mind that, if he can find some control, because I’d much rather use a consistently good guy like Leo as the 7th and 8th inning fireman along with Kiko Calero and Dan Meyer than use him in the relatively low leverage save situations.
Matt R(NLEC): As may be a staple with the questions of Chatter Up!, who on the Nats pitching and hitting staff puts the most fear in you and other Fish fans?
Wally(FG): Josh Willingham is a man on a mission this season, and he’s really making the Marlins regret trading him and not Hermida. He’s been on fire, and you don’t want to see him right now. Jordan Zimmermann is going to be a legitimate front line starter, and he’s got enough stuff right now to cause any lineup fits.
Thanks Wally, we will move on to Mark from CenterfieldGate’s first appearance at Chatter Up!
Matt R(NLEC): Do you feel the Nats made the right decision with Nick Johnson’s value? Paying most of his salary for one prospect seems to be a bit much while giving up a player of Johnson’s (healthy) caliber.
Mark P(CFG): I was not surprised that Mike Rizzo sent Nick Johnson, but i was surprised that he sent along the money. This is very unusual for the Nats ownership, which likes to sign off on these kinds of things. Despite that, I think that the Nats got good value for Johnson: there was no guarantee he would be back next year and his history of injuries makes every Nats fan skeptical of his value. I think adding the lefthander that they got — Aaron Thompson — was a very good move. He was not the top-rated pitcher in the Marlins’ system, but the Nats scouted him and he’s the one they wanted. They’re stockpiling pitchers, which is what they should be doing.
Matt R(NLEC):Overall, are you happy with the moves the Nationals made at the deadline and before?
Mark P(CFG): I’m ecstatic, and so are Nats fans. The team, and interim GM Rizzo, piled up a lot of good faith among their faithful with the Milledge and Hanrahan trade. Nyjer Morgan has been exactly what the team needed. But I think the big thing, at least for me, is who they didn’t trade. They kept Zimmerman (of course!) but also Willingham and Dunn. I am a little concerned with the middle infield situation, there’s a real problem at second base. I fear Alberto Gonzalez is still not ready. I’m still steaming that the team didn’t sign a veteran pitcher (Jon Garland) or an infielder (Orlando Hudson) in the offseason.
Matt R(NLEC): I noticed what you wrote this weekend in regards to building vs rebuilding.  Regardless of what you call it, do you honestly think that this team is close to being a .500 team or better as was quoted, or is that just appeasing the fans by ownership?
Mark P(CFG): Are we close — will it only take one or two players? Well, it depends on the players. Let’s be honest: if we get a great infielder to fill the gap at second, we still have one at shortstop. The team says they’re not worried about first base, but they should be. With Johnson gone that’s another weak fielding position. Now we have Dunn and Willingham and Belliard there. That puts Elijah Dukes in the outfield, and not many Nats fans have much faith in him. Including me. So we’re four players away. Still, my bet is that what we’re seeing now (with the Nats climbing to just below .500 since Riggleman took over) is where we could easily be next year. A .500 ballclub can compete for the wildcard. Then too, Nats’ fans have low expectations. We want a World Championship, just like everyone else, but we’ll take a better ballclub, and a .500 ballclub next year.
Matt R(NLEC): What is Nationals Ownership’s obsession with starting pitchers?  Another starting pitcher from the Marlins, and it seems every single prospect they develop or trade for are simply pitchers and mainly starters!  When will they realize that at some point you need to attempt other positions on the field as well?
Mark P(CFG): Yeah, I know. That’s right. But if you take a look at what Stan Kasten did in Atlanta in the late 90s, this is the way he does things. Then too, while I am exasperated by the stockpiling of pitchers, I know that for every four good young hurlers, two are going to develop arm trouble, one will never develop, and the other will only be so-so. And there’s this: there’s no guarantee that simply because the Nats have ten young pitchers that “the odds are” that three of them will be good. There are no odds when it comes to pitching. All of them might be busts. I think about criticizing the ownership for obsessing over pitching, and then I remember Ben McDonald, and Ben Sheets, and Mark Prior …. and the list is endless.
Matt R(NLEC): What Marlins hitter and pitcher strike fear into you and Nats fans the most?
Mark P(CFG): Dan Uggla. I just love Dan Uggla. He’s a Nats’ killer. I always pine for the day that the Marlins’ ownership will get tired of going to arbitration with him and send him on to Washington. I would be at every game. Geeez Louise, if we had this guy at second base we would have some kind of team: he’s a gamer, hardnosed, tough at the plate, just plays and plays and plays. Yeah, I know, he doesn’t hit for average, but he’s got a lot of pop in his bat. Lightstand power. He’s good around the bag at second. He’s only going to get better. And whatarewegonna do? Play Ronnie Belliard? So my advice for Florida fans is — start a petition drive to trade Dan to the Nats.

Cliff Lee made a good first impression

Cliff Lee made a good first impression

Cliff Lee (1-0) pitched a four-hitter, carrying a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and even adding two hits with the bat, and the Phillies felt an immediate impact two days after acquiring the left-hander from Cleveland, beating the San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Friday night. He dazzled from the start for the World Series champions, tossing his 11th career complete game, fourth this season and third in four starts. Lee’s line: one run, six strikeouts, two walks, 109 pitches and 78 strikes. He was done in 2 hours, 39 minutes. Lee doubled in the eighth for his first career extra-base hit and that gave him his first multihit game—and doubled his previous career hit total. Giants rookie Ryan Sadowski (2-4) lost his fourth straight start after beginning his career 2-0 with 16 scoreless innings. He was done after four innings and 82 pitches after feeling some tightness in his shoulder and arm. He hasn’t gone longer than five during his losing streak.

Three Florida relievers shut out the Chicago Cubs over the final 2 1-3 innings Friday night, while the Marlins scored three runs in the eighth against Carlos Marmol for a 5-2 victory. Brendan Donnelly (1-0), who has yet to allow a run in 10 innings with Florida, retired two batters in the eighth for his first NL victory. Leo Nunez pitched a hitless ninth for his ninth save in 12 chances. The relievers combined with starter Chris Volstad on a seven-hitter against the Cubs, who had scored 12 runs in each of the past two games. Florida’s relievers will get a reinforcement Saturday with the return of closer Matt Lindstrom, sidelined since June 23 by an elbow injury. The Marlins have won eight of their last 10 games to surge into wild-card contention, and they were buoyed by the addition of Washington first baseman Nick Johnson minutes before Friday’s trade deadline. He’s expected to be in the lineup Saturday. The score was 2-all when Marmol (2-2) came into the game in the eighth with a scoreless streak of 8 1-3 innings, but he walked the first two batters. Dan Uggla scored from second on Baker’s hit, and Helms doubled to hike his average as a pinch-hitter to .387.

Brian is not a happy camper

Brian is not a happy camper

Schmidt (2-1) walked five and struck out three in six innings, his longest start since going six innings for the Dodgers at San Diego on June 5, 2007. Six scoreless innings, his longest start in more than two years, lifted Schmidt’s spirits and Andre Ethier hit a homer and drove in four runs to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Atlanta Braves 5-0 on Friday night. Ethier hit a three-run homer in the fifth off Tommy Hanson (5-2) and added a run-scoring double in the ninth.“It’s the first time I’ve ever faced him that he’s not thrown me a changeup,” Jones said. “There’s just not that much difference between his changeup and his fastball right now. … But his curveball is much improved.” Hanson gave up eight hits and four runs in six innings to lose his second straight start.

So close...yet so far

So close...yet so far

Sean Green and the New York Mets were on their way to escaping a mess in the eighth inning Friday night when the reliever’s control failed him again. Arizona loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. Green (1-3) hit Upton with a pitch and walked Reynolds after Pedro Feliciano gave up a leadoff single to Gerardo Parra. The Mets looked as if they might escape after Daniel Murphy turned a nifty 3-2-3 double play but Green’s next pitch bounced away from catcher Omir Santos and Upton scampered home to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead. Esmerling Vasquez (2-2) pitched a scoreless seventh, Jon Rauch worked the eighth and Chad Qualls finished for his 19th save. David Wright and Daniel Murphy homered for New York, which has lost its last two after winning five straight. Livan Hernandez gave up two runs and four hits in six innings. Reynolds hit a 415-foot drive to center in the second for his 29th homer and Montero connected in the fourth, reaching the upper deck in right for his 10th of the season. Reynolds had two hits and is batting .396 (21 for 53) since the All-Star break. “We never put a lot of guys on base,” Mets right fielder Jeff Francoeur said. “We never had the chance for a big inning. Doug Davis, he has us all off balance.”

The last of the pirates do battle

The last of the pirates do battle

Ross Ohlendorf (9-8) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings, Matt Capps earned his 21st save and Andrew McCutchen went 2 for 3 for the Pirates. Ryan Zimmerman homered and Cristian Guzman went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Nationals, who have lost three straight. The last-place teams met on a trade deadline day that included the first game for their respective watered-down rosters. In front of his rebuilt former team, Lastings Milledge made a good first impression on the new-look Pittsburgh Pirates. Milledge’s hits came in the third and seventh off Nationals starter John Lannan (7-8), but the left fielder misplayed Guzman’s sinking liner into an RBI double with Hanrahan on the mound in the eighth. Lannan entered the game having allowed a total of two runs in his past two starts but was charged with more than three earned runs in a game for only the third time in his past 20 outings. He allowed five runs and nine hits in seven innings. “I had it bad out there today, but I took some positives out of it,” Lannan said. “You knew that something was going to happen today. Nick’s a great ballplayer and Joe helps any staff. On deadline day, you know a lot of things are going to go down, so it really didn’t affect my mentality.”

Phillies Logo VS Giants Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(58-41, 1st in NL East) made a big splash before the trade deadling, obtaining Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco from the Indians prior to the deadline.  Both should be meeting up with the team in San Francisco this weekend with Lee expected to debut on either Friday or Saturday night, which will shape the rest of the rotation.  The Phillies continue to win and took two of three from the Diamondbacks this week and now will face the wild card leading San Francisco Giants for four. Check out Phillies Phandom for more Philadelphia insight.

The San Francisco Giants(55-46, 2nd in NL West 7GB, 1st in WildCardl) were also players before the trade deadline.  The Giants acquired infielder Freddy Sanchez from the Pirates for a minor league player, and he didn’t have to travel far as the Pirates were just swept out of San Francisco, Sanchez will simply extend his stay.  They also got the news this week that Randy Johnson has a rotator cuff tear and will be out for an extended period of time.  They hope that they can extend their wild card lead, and take some games from the leagues hottest team at the same time.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Thursday @ 10:15PM EST – Giants 7 Phillies 2 (WP – Sanchez LP – Lopez)
Friday @ 10:15PM EST – Lee,PHI(7-9,3.14 ERA) vs. Sadowski,SF(2-3,4.81 ERA)
Saturday @ 9:05PM EST – Blanton,PHI(7-4,4.11 ERA) vs. Lincecum,SF(11-3,2.30 ERA)
Sunday @ 4:05PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-5,4.42 ERA) vs. Zito,SF(6-10,4.54 ERA)
Cubs Logo
VS
Marlins Logo
The Florida Marlines(53-49, 2nd in East 6GB, 3GB of wildcard) welcomed in the Braves to LandShark stadium this week for a three game set.  The teams have no played eight games, with the Marlins winning five of the eight.  The Marlins had a late heroic game from surprisingly solid pinch hitter Ross Glaud on Tuesday, a hitting pitcher on Wednesday, but couldn’t keep the same heroics on Thursday for the sweep.  The Marlins are now winners of 7 out of 9, and hope to continue to march toward the wild card this weekend.  In their way will be the Central Division leading Chicago Cubs.  Check out FishGuts for more insight.

The Chicago Cubs(54-46, 1st in NL Central) had a fairly mediocre first half of the season, but since the All-Star break, they have really turned it on.  The Cubs have now won eleven of fourteen games while only losing one series to the red hot Phillies.  The Cubs have even made a trade with the division rival Pirates yesterday, acquiring reliever John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny while sending Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio and a minor leaguer back.  They lead the Central division by a half a game and will look to extend it this weekend in Miami.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Harden,CHI(7-5,4.55 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(8-9.4.44 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Zambrano,CHI(7-4,3.36 ERA) vs. TBA,FLA
Sunday @ 2:05PM EST – Dempster,CHI(5-5,4.31 ERA) vs. Nolasco,FLA(7-7,5.24ERA)
Dodgers Logo vs_120x120 Braves Logo
The Atlanta Braves(52-50, 3rd in NL East 7GB, 4GB of wildcard) are still one of the hottest teams since the All-Star break, with nine wins against five losses since then, but they are off a tough series loss to division rival Florida Marlins this week.  They went into the weekday series tied for second and now are one game behind the Marlins for both the wildcard and division lead, after losing  a couple tough ones. One game, closer Soriano blew the save with a walk off home run for the Marlins and in the next, starter Kenshin Kawakami couldn’t keep Josh Johnson in the yard.  They welcome in the Dodgers to Altanta, so it gets no easier for them. Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more Braves news and info.

The Los Angeles Dodgers(63-39, 1st in NL West) had a very tough week, especially since we last talked about them in a series preview last weekend.  They went only 2-5 against the Marlins in LA and then the Cardinals on the road.  The Marlins were able to take two of three and the Cardinals crushed them in three of the four games.  The Dodgers salvaged the final game yesterday and luckily they have such a large lead that this stretch did not effect them.  They will hope to get back on a role this weekend in Atlanta.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Schmidt,LAD(1-1,7.88 ERA) vs. Hanson,ATL(5-1,2.95 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:00PM EST – Wolf,LAD(5-5,3.43) vs. Lowe,ATL(10-7,4.20 ERA)
Sunday @ 8:00PM EST – Billingsley,LAD(10-6,3.96 ERA) vs. Jurrjens,ATL(9-7,2.69 ERA)
D'Backs Logo vs_120x120 Mets Logo
The New York Mets(49-52, 4th in NL East 9.5GB, 6.5GB of wildcard) finally had a good week to report here.  The Mets went into Houston last weekend then finally returned home for the first time since the break to face the red hot Astros then Rockies.  The result?  The Mets won five of seven games, including all five of those being consecutive.  They lost the bookends of the seven games, but in between they had great pitching, timely hitting and showed life while coming back in a number of games.  They hope to continue their success with a four game wrap around set against the Arizona Diamondbacks from Friday to Monday. Check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more Mets news.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(44-58, 4th in NL West 19GB) are now 6-7 since the break, and they only have won one series, against the lowly Pirates last weekend as they took three of four.  They are coming off a series loss to the Phillies where they could salvage the finale, but even their ace, Danny Haren couldn’t win that one.  The D’Backs did make a few trades earlier this month and have all but ended their season.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Davis,ARI(5-6,3.76 ERA) vs. Hernandez,NYM(7-5,4.87 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST -Scherzer,ARI(6-6,3.61 ERA) vs. Perez,NYM(2-3, 7.42 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST -Garland,ARI(5-10,4.42 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-6,4.72 ERA)
Monday @ 7:10PM EST – Haren,ARI(10-6,2.19 ERA) vs. TBA,NYM
Cardinals Logo vs_120x120 Pirates Logo
The Washington Nationals(32-70, 5th in NL East 27GB) are definitely on what they can consider a high.  The Nationals had won two straight series heading into Milwaukee this week, where they won the first two to put together a four game winning streak.  They did drop the final two, but all in all, it was one of the better weeks they have had in recent memory.  This weekend they will welcome in the youngest team in baseball after this week’s trades, the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Check out CenterfieldGate for more news, information and insight on the Nats.

The Pittsburgh Pirates(43-58, 6th in NL Central 11GB) are on a five game losing streak and this week completed trades to send more players away and rebuild.  Like the post world series Marlins teams, the Pirates have traded away ten players from the opening day roster in exchange for many minor leaguers.  You have to wonder what a Pirate fan must think.  They will hope their young team can beat out another young team in the Nationals, and will welcome Lastings Milledge to the major league club.

The probable pitchers are shown below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST -Lannan,WAS(7-7,3.25 ERA) vs. Ohlendorf,PIT(8-8,4.51 ERA)
Friday @ 7:05PM EST-Stammen,WAS(3-5,4.46 ERA) vs. Vasquez,PIT(1-5,6.21 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – Balester,PIT(1-1,4.00 ERA) vs. Maholm,PIT(6-5,4.70 ERA)

Mets Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies are reeling, and the New York Mets aren’t exactly lighting up the ball field either. The Phillies have gone 4-14 in their past eighteen games. During those same eighteen games since a matchup between the two, the Mets are 7-11 actually allowing them to gain ground on the Phillies.
The Phillies(39-37, 1st in NL East) are fresh off a series sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves, and have now lost five of their past six series including three series sweeps by opposing teams. The hitting has been mostly horrendous, including a long slump by Jimmy Rollins, which Phillies fans hope was broken last night. The pitching isn’t much better, as Ryan Madson hasn’t seemed himself since being placed into the closers role when Lidge was on the DL. Matt at Phillies Phandom discusses some other stats and issues today. Be sure to stop by Phillies Phandom for all your Phillies resources.

The New York Mets(39-39, 3rd Place in NL East 1GB) are certainly not looking much better, but they have at least won two games in a row. The Mets were in a five game losing streak to the Yankees and Brewers before Pelfrey pitched a gem on Wednesday and the offense didn’t give up on Thursday against the Brewers and Pirates. They now hope that their injury ravaged team can help them out when they visit the City of Brotherly Love for three games. TRDMB takes a look at Rodrigo Lopez the spot starter for the Phils, in for the injured Antonio Bastardo who was in for the injured Brett Myers. Make sure to go to and bookmark The Real Dirty Mets Blog for all Mets news and info.

One thing with this series is that no one knows what will happen, as is usually the case when these two teams meet. Probable pitchers and times are below.

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Hernandez,NYM(5-3,4.04 ERA) vs. Lopez,PHI(0-0,0.00 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:05PM EST – Nieve,NYM(3-1,2.25 ERA) vs. Moyer,PHI(6-6,6.05 ERA)

Sunday @ 1:35PM EST -Santana,NYM(9-6,3.34 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(4-4,5.08 ERA)
Pirates Logo
VS
Marlins Logo
The streaky Florida Marlins(41-39, 1st Place in NL East) will welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates to Landshark Stadium this weekend. The Marlins have recently been through a five game winning streak, followed by a three game losing streak, then continued with their current three game winning streak. They will hope to continue that streak against the Pirates this weekend. The Marlins moved into a virtual first place tie last night when the Phillies lost, this is the latest the Marlins have been in first place in a season, and they have won two world series, think they appreciate the wildcard? Hanley Ramirez will also look to continue his 10 game RBI streak when the Buccos come in this weekend.

The Pirates(36-43, 6th in the NL Central, 6GB) are 5-5 in their last ten games and are seven games under .500 after yesterday’s loss to the Mets. Still, they are only six games out of first in another very competitive division, so they certainly are nothing to take lightly. The Pirates made two deals this week, including sending their pesky lead-off man Nyjer Morgan to the NL East Rival Nationals for former Met Lastings Milledge.
The probably matchups and gametimes are below. .

Friday @ 6:10PM EST – Morton,PIT(0-1,4.09 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(5-7,4.63 ERA)
Saturday @ 6:10PM EST-Duke,PIT(8-6,3.13 ERA) vs. Miller,FLA(2-4,4.45 ERA)

Sunday @ 1:10PM EST-Ohlendorf,PIT(7-6,4.41 ERA) vs. Nolasco,FLA(5-6,5.99 ERA)
Braves Logo vs_120x120 Nationals Logo
The Atlanta Braves have now won four in a row, capped off by the series sweep of the division leading Phillies. The Braves(38-40 4th in NL East 2GB) have put themselves right back into the NL East race, along with three other teams with the streak. In the past few days, they have showcased their starting pitching, including young Tommy Hanson who will pitch again this weekend looking to stay perfect. The bullpen, mainly Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez have been very solid in securing leads late in games or giving the team a chance to score late in a game to win. More Braves news can be found at The Braves Baseball Blog.

The Nationals(22-54 5th in NL East 17GB) are now 2-8 in their last ten and it seems like years ago since they had won four in a row versus the AL East giant Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. The Nats are fresh off a series sweep by the Marlins in Miami, and they look to find that winning combination they had against the Yankees and Blue Jays just a few weeks ago. The rumors of Manny Acta seem long gone now though, so maybe Acta sleeps well at night, for now.You can find Nats news at CenterfieldGate.com

Probably pitchers and game times are listed below:

Friday @ 6:35PM EST-Kawakami,ATL(4-6,4.25 ERA) vs. Detwiler,WAS(0-4,5.24 ERA)
Saturday @ 1:05PM EST-Hanson,ATL(4-0,2.48 ERA) vs. Lannan,WAS(5-5,3.45 ERA)

Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – Lowe,ATL(7-6,4.44 ERA) vs. Olsen,WAS(1-4,6.56 ERA)

This should be a great weekend of National League East Baseball, please be sure to check back to NLEC or the team affiliate blog frequently!

Dukes sent to AAA Syracuse

Dukes sent to AAA Syracuse

AP and ESPN report the Washington Nationals sent OF Elijah Dukes to Syracuse on Wednesday after the trade with Pittsburgh yesterday.  They did this in order to make room on the roster for Nyjer Morgan because Lastings Milledge was currently on the minor league roster when the trade was made.

Both players received on Tuesday are in Florida and at least Nyjer Morgan is available to play.

Earlier this afternoon the Nationals officially completed a trade which will bring them OF Nyjer Morgan from the Pittsburgh Pirates and left handed reliever Sean Burnett.  The Nationals gave up still young, but troublesome Lastings Milledge and reliever Joel Hanrahan to get the deal done.

Morgan is having a very solid season at the age of 28 batting .277 with 18 SB, 27 RBI and 77 total hits and is playing very solid defense as well.  Burnett has been a pretty solid reliever appearing in 38 games, pitching 32.1 innings to a 3.08 ERA and should help a troubled Nats bullpen.

Milledge will now play for his third team and hope to have the luck and success everyone thought he would for years now.  He is still only 24 years old and has the potential to put up All-star numbers.  He was demoted to the minors this year after failing to produce in the leadoff spot for the Nationals.

Hanrahan has had a rough season after being named the closer in spring training.  He only recorded 5 saves before being removed from the role.  The Nationals had been using a more closer by committee type approach and it is unclear how Pittsburgh will utilize the former starter.
