The Point Is…

Crickets. Nothing is really going on. After last week’s flurry of activity, it is all quiet on the Free Agent/Trade front. I think it is safe to assume that the Bay/Holliday sweepstakes will not be over until sometime in January. There may be minor free agent signings over the next couple of days, but nothing major.

Surprisingly, this article is not about me.

Surprisingly, this article is not about me.

Though I admit, I find it more exciting to find out where the under the radar free agents end up as opposed to the high priced stars. We all know Jason Bay is going to a handful of places. Same with Matt Holliday. Its guys like Orlando Hudson and Ben Sheets who will be interesting and it is those types of signings that make the difference.

Orlando Hudson signed a 1 year deal with the Dodgers and suffice to say, he was a major part of the Dodgers offense for most of the season. Certainly the Dodgers got a great return on their one year investment.

For example, Jayson Werth signed a one year $850,000 deal with the Phillies prior to the 2007 season. I think that has worked out quite nicely for the Phillies. Adam Dunn signed with the Nationals last season for 2 yrs/$20 million, which while high, isnt too bad considering the Nationals received 38 HR’s, 105 RBI, and a .267 average for their money. If I remember correctly, no one wanted to pay him because of the cost/value differential. Think the Braves or Mets wouldnt mind having that kind of production in the lineup?

The point is, unless you are the Yankees, and you fill almost every position on your roster with a big name free agent signing, teams win and lose from 1-40 on the roster. This means that you have to maximize your budget and find the best deals. Typically those deals are for guys, like Ben Sheets, who may end up being the Comeback Player of the Year next season. We could be talking in July saying things like, can you believe the Rangers signed Sheets for only $3 million for one season, when Sheets has a 10-2 record with a 3.13 ERA. Or how could a team NOT sign Matt Capps after he gets his 20th save.

I know it is a fairly obvious point but I think it often gets overlooked, especially during free agency.  Many fans overlook the value guys.  Sure Mark DeRosa or Adam Kennedy may not be stars, but what they add to their new teams might be more valuable than adding merely one big star.  Every season it seems like players who no one wanted in December end up playing a big role during the season.  Jeff Weaver for the Dodgers is another example.  Pedro Martinez for the Phillies.

Does anyone want to sign me? I will bring my attractive wife!

Does anyone want to sign me? I will bring my attractive wife!

Here is a list of guys, in no particular order, who I think will be a steal when they are finally signed:  (A steal reflecting a positive production/cost ratio as compared to other players)

-Doug Davis (P)

-Brett Myers (P)

-Hank Blalock (1B/3B/DH)

-Octavio Dotel (P)

-Kelly Johnson (2B)

-Xavier Nady (OF)

-Scott Podsednik (OF)

Now, I think there are more guys available who are valuable and not included on this list, but I think this is representative of the players who can definetly help a team win.  These are guys who I am interested in seeing where they end up and following them next year.

Happy Holidays!

Pedro celebrates the Phillies divisional win

Pedro celebrates the Phillies divisional win

The Phillies rode a four run fourth inning against the Astros to take this game and the division, 10-3.  Raul Ibanez contributed a two run home run and a total of three RBI and two runs scored as the Phillies had a laugher.  Pedro Martinez only went four innings but Kyle Kendrick(3-1) worked three scoreless innings allowing just two hits for the victory.  Check out Phillies Phandom for more on the victory and congrats to them and their team on the third straight division victory.

Brian Moehler(8-12) was pretty terrible in this game, only lasting 4.1 innings but allowing six hits and seven runs including three walks in the loss.  Josh Towles had a great game, hitting two solo home runs to provide two of the three runs they received.  The series between the two teams ends today.

Chipper watches the playoffs fly away

Chipper watches the playoffs fly away

The Florida Marlins are playing spoiler once again, as they seem to do every year, with their second consecutive win against the Braves, 5-4.  Ross Gload had a two run home run and Jorge Cantu went 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Marlins in this one.  Ricky Nolasco(13-9) went 7.2 innings allowing just four hits and two runs and striking out SIXTEEN batters in this one, what a gem.  Brenden Donnelly came on for the final out to get the save(2) in this one as Leo Nunez was struggling, but still got his 14th save of the season, check out FishGuts for more.

Javier Vazquez had a rare loss in a big game for the Braves.  Vazquez(15-10) went six innings and allowed eight hits and five runs (only three earned) but also struck out nine.  The Braves made a comeback bid in this one as they were down 5-0 entering the seventh.  Adam LaRoche had a two RBI single, followed by Yunel Escobar and Omar Infante RBI singles in the ninth before the Marlins put the game away, check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

Maxwell with a walkoff granny

Maxwell with a walkoff granny

Ah, the sought after matchup of the basement teams was won in a sweep by the Nats, with a 7-4 walk off win on Wednesday night.  Justin Maxwell came to the plate and hit a grand slam sending the Nats to a 7-4 win when they entered the inning down 4-2.  Adam Dunn had walked just before him to get them within one run and he took a KRod pitch out of the stadium.  Ron Villone(5-6) got the win with 0.2 innings pitched and you can get more at Centerfield Gate.

Francisco Rodriguez had one of the worst games a closer can take, thank god it meant nothing.  Rodriguez(3-6) blew his seventh save of the year and got two outs in the ninth while allowing three hits, five runs and two walks on 37 pitches.  Omir Santos had two RBI in this game to lead the Mets along with Carlos Beltran and Fernando Tatis, but all for naught.  Check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more.

Braves Logo chatterup Mets Logo
Welcome to the second Chatter Up! of the day here at NLEC. This week we bring in The Real Dirty Mets Blog as they continue a divisional road trip against The Braves. So we have Connor Tapp of The Braves Baseball Blog, lets get it on!
MrNorthJersey(NLEC): Now that the team has been eliminated how soon do you think it will take before Fans get an idea of what the front office off season strategy will be going forward for 2010?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): Hopefully soon after the world series. I imagine the Mets will be making internal changes and adjustments as they decide where they want to go with their team. Fred Wilpon has already said he does not like the current direction of the team and I imagine nobody does either. We will have a considerable amount of people potentially leaving this year and there is A LOT of room to improve this team so hopefully they are developing that blueprint as we speak…because I mean cmon, what else are they doing
Matt S(PP): I don’t mean to sound like a cocky Phillies fan, but … Shouldthe Mets be missing Pedro Martinez right now? Or was it the right decision to not re-sign Pedro, considering the tough year the team has had? What do the fans think about Pedro?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): If we had in our possession a 1982 Delorian with a flux capacitor I would say yes we would be missing pedro right now lol. Fact is with Pedro’s injury plagued seasons here, he had worn out his welcome. I do not believe Pedro was in any way shape or form going to happen for the Mets. By the time Pedro became “affordable”, the Mets were realistically thinking about the Wild Card and the reason being was due to the amount of injuries we sustained. For us to think about adding and depending on an injury prone player like Pedro(since we lived it for 3 years) would be death to Met management. It was a calculated risk to not gamble on Pedro, one that has not looked very good every time he steps on the field with a Philly uniform. I cannot speak on the fan base as you can tell on TRDMB, they each have their own opinions on EVERYTHING but as far as I am concerned….I will always remember the pedro of 05(and the sprinklers going off during his start) and the promise he embodied of brighter days ahead, and then I will realize that his absence due to injury may have partially been the reason the Mets look the way they look today and(no offense to ollie..well…maybe a little) why the Mets were not champions in 2006.
Matt S(PP): Any chance we’ll get to see highly-touted prospect Ike Davis before the end of the season? On a similar note, Josh Thole showed flashes of brilliance over the weekend against the Phillies. Do you feel he’ll be a everyday player next year?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): I believe Thole has definitely added stock. I hope he is not as I don’t think he is quite ready yet but there is always that possibility. The Mets are a little bit of cloak and dagger when it comes to their finances so there is always a chance the Mets will start 2010 with Omir/Thole. I for one would like to see him start in AA or AAA because he has merited that consideration. Ike I believe is still at least a year or two away from coming up but we may see him in September next year. I believe in Ikes case, it depends on what the Mets do at 1b. If they trade for a young and power bat, they will try to convert Ike into an OF and we may see him break in under that capacity or if they stay with Murphy for 1b, we may see him sooner rather than later.
Matt R(NLEC): Since the year is about done, what has been the biggest POSITIVE surprise of the season?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): Im sure there are several and everyone will tell you different. For me it’s a tie between Luis Castillo’s rebound performance this year and Daniel Murphys at 1b. Daniel was…well lets face it…horrible in the OF. To see Murph handle 1b in the way he has is remarkable and has been a definite positive in a player who has become somewhat of a fan favorite. Luis Castillos first year here was similar to Carlos Beltrans first year, injury plagued. In New York it is VERY difficult to bounce back from a bad first impression. Luis has been the constant professional and has worked his ass off to make sure he had a great sophomore year here and it has paid off. Many fans were concerned with the 6 million tied up on a injury plagued 2b, but he has quieted a lot of critics with his season this year.
Matt R(NLEC): Going into the offseason, do you think there will be much positivity on the team for next year if all injuries appear to be healed, or do you expect this offseason to be just as painful if not worse than the past few?
DirtySanchez(TRDMB): I believe there will be positives going into next year. One because they all had a years experience in a new ballpark and I believe they will be more comfortable with it. I believe everyone realizes that with as many injuries we sustained at the same time was the prime reason we did not compete this year, so given the fact that we have everyone back with a clean bill of health should warrant some positive morale. I believe this offseason(as it seems we say every offseason) will be extremely challenging and I do no expect the Mets to plug up EVERY hole on the team. They need to separate the needs from the wants and make a plan based on that. I see a lot of changes for this team, just hoping it will be for the better.
Thanks Dirty now to Connor Tapp of The Braves Baseball Blog
MrNorthJersey(NLEC): Tommy Hanson has had an impressive rookie year. If you had to compare him to another pitcher who would you say he most resemples?
Connor T(BBB): It’s a cop-out, but I’d say it’s too early to make any meaningful comparisons. For example, the comparisons of Strasburg to Prior don’t tell us much
MrNorthJersey(NLEC): Do you expect Braves to pick up Hudson’s $12 million dollar option for 2010?
Connor T(BBB): Every indication from the front office has been that his option will be picked up. Seems like the smart move. (Like it or not, the Kawakami & Lowe contracts are sunk costs.)
MrNorthJersey(NLEC): Who do envison playing 1st base on Opening Day 2010?
Connor T(BBB): I’m going to go out on a limb and say Chipper Jones will get the start at first base, with Adrian Beltre at the hot corner.
Matt S(PP): While the Braves aren’t dead yet, what would you say is the one area that cost this team a chance to win the wild card/division title and why?
Connor T(BBB): It’s simple: signing Garret Anderson in lieu of Adam Dunn. Joe Sheehan just wrote a great piece for Baseball Prospectus demonstrating how that blunder cost the Braves about five wins.
Matt S(PP): What is Jordan Schaffer’s status in the organization? Is he still regarded as a key part of the Braves’ future? Why or why not?
Connor T(BBB): 2009 was something of a lost season for Schafer. First, he whiffed his way back to the minors. Then, injury cut the rest of his season short. I’d downgrade my upside projection a touch, but talent doesn’t (usually) disappear overnight.

Please feel free to email any recommend questions or comments about the segment to mrose@nleastchatter.com or go to this forum topic and post a reply. We need questions for our next Chatter Up! Those games are Nats @ Mets and Phillies @ Braves. Thanks for everyone’s participation!

Lidge barely gets a save

Lidge barely gets a save

Game 1

In the first game of a double dip yesterday, Kyle Kendrick made a spot start for the Phillies and looked great.  Kendrick(1-1) went 7.1 innings and only allowed seven hits and two earned runs, both on an Anderson Hernandez two run shot in the eighth.  He was supported by a Ben Francisco homer and a Shane Victorino two run homer early.  The hit that mattered though was an Andy Tracy RBI single in the bottom of the eighth giving insurance runs.  Brad Lidge narrowly got his 29th save of the season working the ninth and allowing three hits and two runs before getting the final out to end it.

The Mets sent John Maine to the mound after a long absence and although he could only pitch through the third because of a pitch count, he did well.  Maine(5-5) took the loss even though he only gave up two hits and a run on 57 pitches.  The Mets relief gave up a combined eight hits and four runs in the final five innings and did not help the Mets comeback.  Anderson Hernandez had the two run shot to bring them closer and in the ninth Josh Thole singled home Francouer and then came in himself on a Jeremy Reed single, but they could not get closer.

Pedro shuts down his former mates

Pedro shuts down his former mates

Game 2:

Pedro Martinez is now 2-0 versus his former team and he absolutely shut them down last night in the nightcap.  Martinez(5-0) went eight innings allowing six hits and striking out seven while throwing 130 pitches! The only run was scored on an RBI single by Chase Utley, scoring Jimmy Rollins in the first inning.  Ryan Madson got his eighth save of the year but did allow one batter to get on base for the shaky bullpen.

Phillies Phandom has more on both games of this double dip for you!

Tim Redding pitched very well and well enough to win, but again, no offense behind him.  Tim Redding(2-6) went six innings and allowed three hit sand only the run in the first inning in taking a real tough luck loss.  Only Brian Schneider and Anderson Hernandez had multiple hits for the Mets as they will regroup and hope to win a few in Atlanta this week.

The Real Dirty Mets Blog will have more on the double dip from the Mets side of the diamond.

Umm..wow

Umm..wow

The Florida Marlins ended a deflating and disappointing weekend with a 7-2 loss at the hands of the last place Nationals.  Nats ace John Lannan(9-11) went the minimum only allowing one run on six hits to get his 9th win of the year and let his offense do the rest.    Elijah Dukes and Pete Orr added two RBI a piece and rookie Ian Desmond continued to play well going 2-5 for the Nats in this one.  Centerfield Gate will have more on this game and the series and all the Nats news you need.

Chris Volstad was back from the minors to make a start and it did not go well for him.  Volstad(9-12) went only three innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs (five total) and allowed five walks and a home run on the day.  Unfortunately the offense couldn’t do much to get back in the game in this one.  Jorge Cantu and Cody Ross had the only RBI for the Marlins on this day and Hanley Ramirez added three hits, but this was a disappointing weekend for the Fish.  FishGuts has more on this.

Carpenter with a rare bad one

Carpenter with a rare bad one

Javier Vazquez continues to be solid for the Braves, as he led them to a series sweep over the Central leading Cardinals yesterday 9-2.  Vazquez(9-2) went a complete game allowing seven hits and two runs and eight strikeouts to get the victory here.  Nate McClouth had four hits and Adam LaRoche had two hits and three RBI to lead the Braves to the sweep.  The Braves Baseball Blog has more on the Bravos.

Chris Carpenter does not have many starts like this, but unfortunately he laid an egg on Sunday.  Carpenter(16-4) managed through six taxing innings but gave up nine hits and seven runs and the offense was stagnant for him as well.  Matt Holliday had the only two RBI for the Cardinals in this one and Skip Schumaker had three hits, but the Cardinals will look to rebound from this tough weekend this week.

Madson cleans up for Lidge

Madson cleans up for Lidge

The Philadelphia Phillies got back on the winning track last night, even though their closer gave them a scare, yet again.  Five solo home runs produced the runs, and they included two Ibanez shots, and one each by Jayson Werth, Carlos Ruiz and Chase Utley.  Pedro Martinez(4-0) stayed perfect in a Phillies uniform going 6.2 innings allowing just seven hits and three runs before giving way to the Phillies bullpen.  Lidge came in for a save but loaded the bases with just one out before Ryan Madson earned his fifth save of the season without allowing a run in for a final of 5-3.  Phillies Phandom has more on this win and Lidge’s struggles.

Nationals starter John Lannon started out well, but in the seventh it fell apart for him.  Lannan(8-11) lasted 6.2 innings allowing six hits on four runs and four solo home runs in taking this loss, and all four home runs were between the fifth and seventh innings.  Christian Guzman and Will Nieves contributed RBI singles for the Nats and Willie Harris got them closer with a solo shot but that would be it.  Check out Centerfield Gate for more Nats news.

Maybin with the final blow

Maybin with the final blow

Last night the Marlins did not get a whole lot of offense, but the offense they did receive was big. Hanley Ramirez hit a third inning two run home run scoring Chris Coghlan and in the fourth, Cameron Maybin hit another in the fourth scoring Cody Ross in the 4-2 victory.  Rick VandenHurk pitched well enough to win but left in the fourth with back spasms after allowing only one run on four hits.  Brian Sanches(4-1) was credited with the win by pitching two scoreless and hitless innings for the Marlins as Leo Nunez worked a perfect ninth for his 19th save of the season, FishGuts has more on this game and the Fish.

Tim Redding couldn’t find the strike zone last night at all, as he walked four in five innings.  Worse than that was when he grooved a few balls down the zone rather than walk a few other batters, leading to the walks.  Redding(2-5) had a final line of five innings with five hits four runs and four strike outs and the two homers.  The Mets got their runs on rookie Josh Thole’s first MLB RBI and a Luis Castillo infield single in the fourth and fifth respectively.  Check out The Real Dirty Mets Blog for more.

Vazquez stops the streak

Vazquez stops the streak

Javier Vazquez finally stopped what turned into a five game losing streak for the Atlanta Braves.  Vazquez(12-9) went seven innings and allowed only three hits on four runs and nine strike outs and allowed zero runs.  He got run support from Adam LaRoche and Nate McClouth both hitting solo home runs for the small margin of victory, 2-1.  Rafael Soriano got his 22nd save but not after giving up three hits and a run in the ninth inning, The Braves Baseball Blog has more on the Bravos.

The Astros put Felipe Paulino on the mound and he absolutely pitched well enough to win.  Paulino(2-8) went six innings while allowing four hits and two runss, both on home runs but the Astros offense faltered.  Hunter Pence got the lone RBI as he drove in Miguel Tejada in the ninth inning.

Pedro goes to 3-0

Pedro goes to 3-0

Pedro Martinez at his age, did something that most probably did not expect, outduel last year’s Cy Young award winner.  Pedro Martinez(3-0) worked seven innings while allowing only five hits and one run but struck out nine batters.  To be fair, it was against the futile San Francisco lineup, but none the less, Brad Lidge worked the ninth with some trouble again for his 28th save.  Not surprisingly, Ryan Howard ended up driving in the winning run in the sixth with an RBI double scoring Chase Utley to go along with Jayson Werth’s second inning solo shot in a 2-1 victory.  Check out Phillies Phandom for more on the Phils.

Tim Lincecum took a tough loss as he was able to hold down the Phillies offense to just four hits, unfortunately two of those hits scored runs.  Lincecum’s(13-5) final line was four hits, two runs, one walk, eleven k’s and a homer and took a loss.  The Giants only managed a first inning solo shot from Eugenio Velez and he was the only Giants hitter with two hits.

Nolasco evens the series

Nolasco evens the series

The Florida Marlins were looking to get a split out of a tough inter-division series after having a very tough weekend and beginning to the week.  Ricky Nolasco(10-8) rebounded from a bad start to the year to get ten victories as he went six innings allowing three runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts as the Marlins won 8-3.  Five Marlins starters had a single RBI, among them Chris Coghlan, Cameron Maybin, Nick Johnson, Jorge Cantu and Brett Carroll during the victory.  FishGuts has more on the Marlins chances going forward.

Tommy Hanson labored through five innings for the Braves and pitched well enough to win, but his offense couldn’t support him so he left with a no decision with only two hits and one run allowed, but walking four.  Reliever Kris Medlan(3-5) got the loss and a blown save as he only got one out but gave up three hits a walk and four runs (only two earned) on way to the loss.  Brian McCann put the Braves up early with a solo home run and Martin Prado and Chipper Jones had RBI singles later in the game as well.  The Braves Baseball Blog is where to go for more Braves info.

Wright looks to be ok

Wright looks to be ok

In a day of first for the Mets’ youngsters, David Wright did something hes done before, but it seems like its been forever.  Wright went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored and is so far not showing any ill effects of his concussion since being back as the Mets took the finale of the series 8-3 against the Rockies.  Pat Misch(1-1) who was robbed of his first major league win last Friday by Mets relief pitching, didn’t miss this time.  Misch went seven innings and allowed only four hits and two runs for the victory.  Josh Thole, a September call up at Catcher for the Mets also went 2-5 with his first major league single, double, and stolen base, quite a nice debut.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog covers anything left in the Mets season.

Staten Island native Jason Marquis could not complete the sweep for the wildcard leading Rockies.  Marquis(14-10) only lasted five innings but surrendered nine hits and five runs to the Mets, including a four spot in the fifth inning.  Unfortunately his run support was lacking as well until after he left in the seventh inning.  The Rockies got three solo home runs from Chris Iannetta, Ian Stewart and Clint Barmes over the seventh and eighth innings but it was the farthest they would get.

Moyer with a rare appearance

Moyer with a rare appearance

The big bat of Ryan Howard provided the firepower for Philadelphia in their soggy 4-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in Philadelphia on Friday, extending the Phillies lead in the N.L. East to eight games. The Braves were hoping to sneak up on the Phillies, sending ace rookie Tommy Hanson to the mound, but Hanson could not keep the Phillies bats off the board, giving up a home run to Howard in the second before being relieved (he was pulled from the game because of a rain delay) by a bevy of Braves relievers who kept the game close, but could not keep it close enough: Howard homered again in the fourth. The Phillies, meanwhile, started Pedro Martinez – but like Hanson he was also pulled from the game as a result of the deluge. This is becoming a habit with Martinez, whose last start was also shortened by showers. In both cases, Martinez was relieved by Jamie Moyer, relegated to a bullpen role as a result of Martinez’s signing and promotion.

The soggy field did not dampen the spirits of Phillie fans, however, who stayed throughout the contest – knowing that the Braves-Phillies tilt would help put the final touches on a successful Phillies season. The frosting on the Phillies cake was a 9th inning appearance by a sometimes-shaky Brad Lidge, who set down the Braves for his 26th save. Full coverage of the Braves can be found at The Braves Baseball Blog. And check out Phillies Phandom for more on the Phillies.

Blanks crosses home...man hes big!

Blanks crosses home...man hes big!

The Florida Marlins pitching staff, which has been up and down all year was down on Friday night, as Chris Volstad suffered through one of his worst starts in the majors – and the Marlins went on to drop a key game against the San Diego Padres 9-5. Volstad, who had pitched brilliantly in some of his starts earlier in the year, lasted only 1.2 innings against the Pads, despite help from some lively Marlins’ bats: Chris Coghlan was 3-5, Wes Helms was 2-5, Hanley Ramirez was 2-4 and Cody Ross was 2-4. But as any conch collector in Key West can tell you, without pitching you just can’t win. So it was with the Marlins tonight – as the team fell into a tie with the Braves for second place in the N.L East, a full eight games back of the surging Phillies. It now seems unlikely that either of them, both of whom were retooled and ready for the summer campaign in the spring, can catch Philadelphia.

While the Marlins have not raised the white flag on the season – they still have Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco throwing hard and well (and are well-stocked with a formidable wall of power hitters) – they have decided that Chris Volstad needs more work. In the wake of their loss to the lowly Friars, the team sent Volstad (9-11) packing to the minors. The decision shows just how far the fastballer has fallen. “People are going to struggle, but when you see frustration and lack of confidence, that’s when we have to make a decision as coaches and an organization on what’s best for the kid, and we’ve done that,” Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We’re going to option Volstad down to New Orleans to give him a little breather and come back.” You can read all about the game, and the decision on Volstad, on FishGuts.

Soriano with the big fly

Soriano with the big fly

Mets lefty Pat Misch baffled the Cubs for seven solid innings on Friday, but it wasn’t enough, as the New York bullpen melted down – and ended up giving the game away to the Chicago North Siders 5-2. The loss was particularly frustrating because the Mets had seemed to master Cubs’ starter Ted Lilly, touching the always tough veteran for two hard earned runs – one in the second and one in the eighth. The Cubs, skidding after losing two of three to the lowly Nats, were ripe for the picking, but the Mets bullpen could not take advantage: the usually dependable Brian Stokes gave up a three run shot to Alfonso Soriano (who victimized his team with two outfield gaffes) that effectively sealed the contest.

Misch, who grew up in Illinois watching the Cubs, said that he was nervous playing in Chicago. “I couldn’t eat a thing,” he said after the game, “and I usually eat a lot before I pitch.” The Mets, who have only won nine of their last 21, are desperate to finish the season on an up-beat note, but things have not been going well for them lately – Friday was only the most recent example of their recent troubles. When the starting pitching is going well (as it was on Friday in Wrigley) their bullpen lets them down, and when their bullpen is going well, it seems their starting pitching lets them down. Worse yet, on Friday the team got word that shortstop Jose Reyes, who has not played in three months, may well have to undergo surgery on his right hamstring tendon. The Mets will attempt to bounce back from Friday loss on Saturday, when Bobby Parnell faces off against Ryan Dempster at Wrigley. The Real Dirty Mets Blog covers everything you’d ever want to know about this game . . . and the Mets.

Pujols with the walk-off winner!

Pujols with the walk-off winner!

Who would pitch to Albert Pujols in a 2-2 tie before a screaming throng at Busch Stadium in St. Louis? Why the Washington Nationals, that’s who. Washington Nationals reliever Jason Bergman served up a fastball in Pujols wheelhouse in the ninth inning of a beautifully pitched duel between Nats’ pitcher John Lannan and newly acquired Redbirds’ ace John Smoltz – and the Cardinals beat the Nats 3-2 in St. Louis. Lannan pitched eight innings of four hit ball before giving up a home run to Khalil Greene that tied the game and was subsequently relieved by Jason Bergman, who came on to pitch the ninth. Washington’s long-suffering fans didn’t have to wait long to determine the results: Pujols put a fastball into the upper deck in left field at Busch to pull out the victory.

St. Louis fans gave a warm welcome to Smoltz, who was sharp in his second start for the Redbirds. The former Atlanta star pitched four innings of four hit ball, but left with little damage – two doubles by Elijah Dukes. Washington’s big boppers: Adam Dunn, Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Willingham flailed away in vain against Smoltz all night in vain. For all things good and bad about the Nats, be sure to check out CenterfieldGate which also has a lot more on this game.

Phillies Logo VS Phillies Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(73-52, 1st in NL East) had a bit of a surprise and a possible worry when in Pittsburgh this week.  They had opportunities to win all three games, and three times late comebacks caused at the least, extra innings if not a loss.  Monday and Tuesday the leads were blown by the bullpen, luckily Ryan Howard saved them on Wednesday, but on Thursday they allowed the starter J.A. Happ to try to finish and he couldn’t do it either.  They hope to get the wheels rollin again at home against division rival Atlanta.   Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The Atlanta Braves(67-60, tied for 2nd in NL East 7GB) also had a tough week, one that they thought should be an easy one.  They managed to take the finale of a three game set against the pesky Padres with a blowout victory Thursday afternoon.  The Braves started the week alone in second, but now find themselves back in a tie for second with the Marlins.  Neither team looks to have the horses to get a playoff birth right now, but a good weekend could change that. Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Hanson,ATL(9-2,3.12 ERA) vs. Martinez,PHI(2-0,5.14 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Lowe,ATL(12-8,4.48 ERA) vs. Lee,PHI(12-9,2.63 ERA)
Sunday @ 8:05PM EST – Jurrjens,ATL(10-8,2.91 ERA) vs. Blanton,PHI(8-6,3.88 ERA)

The Florida Marlins(67-60, tied for 2nd in NL East 7GB) welcomed in the AAA Mets this week to South Florida and they couldn’t even up the attendance with Mets fans!  The Fish did manage to take the first two games of the series before the pitching failed them in the finale on Thursday.  The series win moved them back into a second place tie, and they look to gain ground in an unlikely playoff race now.  FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The San Diego Padres(54-75, 6th in NL West 22.5GB) are into the role of playing spoiler now.  They went into Atlanta as mentioned previously and took two of three from the playoff hopeful Padres, dashing many of their hopes.  They can put a real damper in the hearts of the Marlins fans this weekend in South Florida.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Correia,SD(8-10,4.46 ERA) vs. Volstad,FLA(9-10,4.73 ERA)
Saturday @ 6:10PM EST – TBA,SD(—,-.– ERA) vs. Nolasco,FLA(9-8,5.31 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Latos,SD(4-3,4.06 ERA) vs. West,FLA(5-5,4.44 ERA)
Mets Logo VS Cubs Logo
The New York Mets(58-70, 4th in NL East 16.5GB) got more injury news this week, as Johan Santana, JJ Putz and Oliver Perez are all now done for the season.  Oddly enough, David Wright looks to be coming back in a few days, but they just want to get through the season with no more injuries, or at least none that will linger to next year.  This weekend they go to Chicago where the Cubs don’t have the injury excuse for their play, they just aren’t playing to the level they should be.  It should be interesting, do the underachivers win, or the injury depleted team?  The Real Dirty Mets Blog has more.

The Chicago Cubs (63-62, 2nd in NL Central 9GB) are just a lost team since the all-star break and one could make the argument, all season.  They are now 9 full games out of first and just lost a series to the Washington Nationals, so things are just not going well for them.  This should be an interesting series to watch..for all the wrong reasons.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 2:20PM EST – Misch,NYM(0-1,4.09 ERA) vs. Lilly,CHI(9-8,3.40 ERA)
Saturday @ 4:10PM EST – Parnell,NYM(3-6,5.08 ERA) vs. Dempster,CHI(7-7,4.07 ERA)
Sunday @ 2:20PM EST – Figueroa,NYM(1-3,5.40 ERA) vs. Zambrano,CHI(7-5,3.80 ERA)
Nats Logo VS Cardinals Logo
The Washington Nationals(46-82, 5th in NL East 28.5GB) are enjoying playing spoiler, or this week, maybe more appropriately, embarasser.  The Cubs don’t have that many injuries as stated above, but they are still floundering and lost two of three to the Nationals this week.  The Nats can put a dent into the Cardinals this weekend, but they likely will not effect their playoff standing much with the nine game lead.   Check out CenterfieldGate for more.

The St. Louis Cardinals(74-55, 1st in NL Central) are running away with the division right now.  The combination of having Matt Holliday in their now vaunted lineupe and good pitching, including the newcomer John Smoltz has put them out to a nine game lead over the Cubs.  They should be able to cruise into the playoffs now, but look for them to still try to stay sharp.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 8:15PM EST – Lannan,WAS(8-9,4.03 ERA) vs. Smoltz,STL(3-5,7.40 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:15PM EST – Stammen,WAS(4-6,5.08 ERA) vs. Boggs,STL(1-2,4.58 ERA)
Sunday @ 2:15PM EST – Mock,WAS(3-5,5.23 ERA) vs. Wainwright,STL(15-7,2.50 ERA)

Really? Did that just happen?

Really? Did that just happen?

The Philadelphia Phillies guaranteed at the least a series split in New York against the Mets yesterday with a 9-7 victory.  A game that started out looking like a laugher, as the Phillies got three run home runs from Jayson Werth and Carlos Ruiz in the first, ended up being much closer.  Pedro Martinez started against his former team and pitched ok through six innings and helped himself with an RBI single in the third as well.  Martinez(2-0) went six innings and gave up seven hits and four runs, but allowing two home runs to Angel Pagan but must have felt good to get the win.  Brad Lidge worked a troubled ninth inning and was saved by an unassisted triple play by backup infielder Eric Bruntlett to get out of the inning allowing only one run.  Phillies Phandom has more on this game and series which wraps up this afternoon.

Just when you thought you couldn’t see anything else as a Mets fan, they lose on a triple play in what should have been a gift wrapped blown save.  Jeff Francouer hit a line drive to Eric Bruntlett who was up the middle because he was going to cover second as both runners were going on the play, he easily stepped on second and then tagged Murphy to complete the unimaginable.  In a game the Mets were down 6-0, Angel Pagan had both a solo inside the park shot and a solo home run and also scored the final run the Mets would get in the bottom of the ninth.  Oliver Perez was horrendous on this day as he only recorded two outs in the first inning and had run the count to 3-0 against Pedro Martinez before being pulled , giving up two three run home runs, four hits and two walks.  The Mets bullpen combined for 8.1 innings more and allowed three more runs.  The Real Dirty Mets Blog will have more on this game and the floundering Mets season.

McCann comes through again

McCann comes through again

Brian McCann came through with a big hit in the bottom of the eighth inning yesterday, giving the Bravos a 7-5 win and a series victory at a crucial time.  McCann singled home two runs and finished with five total including a home run in the first, and moved the Braves into second place in a game where the Braves were down earlier in the game, but got to the Fish bullpen.  Peter Moylan(6-2) picked up the win in relief pitching one inning and allowing one hit in relief of a bad Derek Lowe outting of only five innings and five runs(three earned).  Rafael Soriano now has 20 saves on the year, as he went the final innings striking one out and giving up a hit, The Braves Baseball Blog will have more.

The Florida Marlins are in serious danger of falling out of the playoff races at this point, in what began as a promising weekend.  Ricky Nolasco could only get through 4.1 innings allowing four runs and nine hits, but left with a lead, and ended with a no decision.  Kiko Calero(2-2) ended up taking the loss as he worked one inning and was charged with the eventual winning run.  Hanley Ramirez went 3-4 and continues his hot hitting and continues to treck towards a batting title and Ronnie Paulino added a three RBI day for the Marlins.  Check out FishGuts for more info on the Marlins.

Zimmerman is good..i got nothin else

Zimmerman is good..i got nothin else

The Washington Nationals were able to finally snap out of their most recent losing streak yesterday, winning 8-3 against the Brewers.  Ryan Zimmerman added three RBI on a two run home run and RBI single and Guzman and Adam Dunn also had two hits a piece.  Craig Stammen(4-6) went 6.1 innings and held the Brewers to five hits and three runs as he got his fourth victory of the season.  CenterfieldGate has more information on the Nats for you.

The Brewers offense could not do much in this game, Alicides Escobar got his first home run, but Lopez was the only other starter to register an RBI.  Manny Parra(8-10) only got through 3.1 inning sand allowed eight hits and eight runs, although five earned, but the relief held the Nats scoreless, unfortunately the Brewers bats were asleep.

Phillies Logo VS Mets Logo
The Philadelphia Phillies(69-49, 1st in NL East) are coming into this Mets series playing some of their best baseball of the year.  The problem is, they don’t need their best baseball this time, as the Mets are completely depleted.  The Phillies have won eight of nine games since being swept by the Marlins two weekends ago and find themselves with their lead in the division back to 6.5 games.  Can the Phillies get as fired up to play the Mets as they always can, even though they are so far apart? Phillies Phandom will have all the information on this series you need.

The New York Mets(56-65, 4th in NL East 14.5GB) just want to get through the year without more controversy and injury.  This week alone, they lost another player to injury (Wright), released Livan Hernandez, activated Billy Wagner, but had a blow up from Sheffield.  At the least this gives people things to write and talk about in an otherwise dismal year for the Mets.  Can they play a bit of a spoiler this weekend?  The Real Dirty Mets Blog will have more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:10PM EST – Hamels,PHI(7-7,4.69 ERA) vs. Pelfrey,NYM(8-8,4.75 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:10PM EST – Happ,PHI(9-2,2.66 ERA) vs. Redding,NYM(1-4,6.53 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:10PM EST – Martinez,PHI(1-0,4.50 ERA) vs. Perez,NYM(3-3,6.06 ERA)
Monday @ 1:10PM EST – Lee,PHI(11-9,2.72 ERA) vs. Parnell,NYM(3-5,4.74 ERA)
Marlins Logo VS Braves Logo
The Florida Marlins(64-57, 2nd in NL East 6.5GB, 4GB of wildcard) could not take care of business this week against a weak opponent and therefore lost ground in both races.  The Astros were able to take two of three games from the Marlins in Houston, and both the Phillies and Colorado Rockies swept their sets to push them into a tie with the Braves in both races at 6.5 games back.  They need to rebound and get some help from other teams this weekend. FishGuts will have more on the Marlins and this defining series.

The Atlanta Braves(64-57, 2nd in NL East 6.5GB, 4GB of wildcard) did exactly what they had to this week in New York and won the series.  It did not look good as they blew a four run lead in the first game but rebounded very well in game two and even beating Johan Santana in the third game.  They continue a division rival week as they welcome in the Marlins who they are tied with currently to see who comes out ahead after the series.  Check out The Braves Baseball Blog for more.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:30PM EST – Sanchez,FLA(1-4,5.55 ERA) vs. Vazquez,ATL(10-8,2.99 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:00PM EST – Volstad,FLA(9-9,4.61 ERA) vs. Hanson,ATL(8-2,3.05 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:30PM EST – Nolasco,FLA(9-8,5.22 ERA) vs. Lowe,ATL(12-8,4.45 ERA)
Brewers Logo VS Nationals Logo
The Washington Nationals(43-78, 5th in NL East 27.5GB) came out of a solid weekend where they rebounded from a three game losing streak to win the final three of a four game set in Cincinnati.  They then welcomed in the Wild card leading Rockies and lost all three to them to get back into a losing streak.  They will be the only National League East team not playing a division rival this weekend as they welcome in the Brew-Crew.  They hope to rebound again as they did last weekend, check out CenterfieldGate for more.

The Milwaukee Brewers(58-62, 4th in NL Central 10.5GB) are now completely floundering, losers of seven of their past ten games and falling to fourth as the Cardinals surge to the division lead.  They will hope to rebound and see if they can get any help from other teams this weekend, but likely spoiler is their best role throughout the season.

Probable pitching matchups are below:

Friday @ 7:05PM EST – Looper,MIL(10-6,5.03 ERA) vs. Martin,WAS(2-2,4.61 ERA)
Saturday @ 7:05PM EST – Burns,MIL(3-4,5.36 ERA) vs. Lannan,WAS(8-9,3.68 ERA)
Sunday @ 1:35PM EST – Parra,MIL(8-9,6.33 ERA) vs. Stammen,WAS(3-6,5.13 ERA)
Monday @ 4:35PM EST – Gallardo(11-10,3.56 ERA) vs. Balester,WAS(1-3,6.75 ERA)
